2010 Suzuki Kizashi: Tips or Pipes?

Not too long ago, Mike Monticello wrote a post about the stylized tips on our Kizashi. His argument was that the stylized tips made you believe the car had more power than it actually does. While I see his point and agree with him, I like them because I dig the "in bumper" look.

This trend is not a new one. In fact I spied this feature on comrade Takahashi's sweet '57 T-Bird. Yes, the T-Bird has straight pipes through a metal bumper in contrast to the current versions which most are "poser" tips, like the Lexus IS-F.

What do you think? Are they "push up bras" as carguy622 hilariously equated them to, or are they something you really like? Or would you just prefer to see some nice pipes sticking out from under the bumper?

Definitely push-up bras. Unlike the bras, though, I think they're ugly. Pulling up behind a car that has these 'tips,' you can see the muffler tip inside and behind and it looks terrible. Just run the standard muffler a bit farther back, and give the tip a nice polished finished. Probably cheaper and, IMO, nicer.

It's no more of a push up bra than having dual exhaust on single cylinder bank engine in the first place.

it is a design feature and it looks good. The isf has 4 outlets on the rear bumper and it looks great too. The size of an exhaust tip or faux outlet obviously will not tell power output or engine type but the sound coming out will.

Please - is there an automotive rule book that no ones told me about that says you must have X cylinders or Y horsepower to have this feature - hell no,, and that's good. try new things see how they work/are accepted and evolve!

It's only when a particular design feature hits the level that it impacts the entire look/appearence of the car. If you compare this minor feature and any "negative" impact (for those that feel this way) perhaps putting it in perspective of other cars and their "features" like the Bangle Butt, the Mazda Grin and the Acura BeaverTeeth- this barely registers.

These fake tips can also be a safety measure. Remember the center exhausts on the Mini Cooper S? Plastic tips don't get hot enough to burn. It also allows designers to extend the bottom of the bumper downwards avoiding the tail-in-the-sky look of the Dodge Neon.

Only if you want to modify the exhaust system of a car can I see this as being a problem. Otherwise, meh.

In normal sunlight it tends to look awesome. Fast forward 8 hours when you're riding behind someone and your headlights reveal what look like '88 civic exhaust pipes sitting in an abyss in the bumper. Totally kills the look. It'd be nice if they at least *tried* to use similarly sized pipes out the back of the muffler, or flared them, or somehow just come close to the size of the hole in the bumper... and not just leave plain ugly pipes there.

If it's a design feature, it's supposed to look good. It means details matter. This misses the mark on almost every car I've seen with it.

I like them when they're done well. The LS460 is the first car I noticed with this type of exhaust, and I think in that case they look really nice. The Kizashi makes little attempt to hide it's pipes, and it looks terrible. I was actually driving behind on the other day and was distracted by how bad it looked.

I like these because it also reduces the chance of burns and/or sooty pants should you lean up against one. Also, getting a rubber-hung dual exhaust with chrome tips to remain centered in the body cutouts is a real headache from the automaker's point of view. Complaints like you wouldn't imagine. Bad for JD Power, etc.

In the end, I don't care that they're fake. A smooth integrated stylish look is better in my book. The exhaust will find its way however these are shaped.

For me it depends on the type of vehicle. I think there are many sedans out there that look quite nice with these faux-integrated exhaust tips. It cleans up the rear end design and they are far easier to keep clean.

Sports cars, on the other hand, had better have exposed, real exhaust pipes. In this situation it's a point of pride. ;)

With that said, on the Kizashi I don't mind it as much since it's not a true sports car. I think the most egregious example of fake pipes is on the Lexus IS-F.

I guess it depends.....didn't the previous gen acura tl have em integrated but they were also the real exhaust?


The problem with the isf is that it insinuated quad exhaust tips when there are none. This zook has two exhaust ports and I think it looks good.

Push up bra. If it was the real exhuast pipe integrated into the bumper, that is pretty fricken sweet. But the big, fako, portals are stupid. Throw on some fake, non-functional hood scoops while you're at it. These are entirely form over function, or more aptly, talking the talk, but not walking the walk.

While a little presumptuous on a "cheap" car like the Kizashi, they are pretty well executed. It's the first thing you notice (which is sort of saying something) when you pull up behind one of these, and they lend a bit of upscale flair and styling interest to what otherwise would be just another bland small car rear end (that you probably wouldn't notice without them).

Push up bra. That analogy is delightfully on point.

On a first glance, you might think "Yeah man, she's got the goods."

But, after some more intimate interactions, you'll find that she's a little more lackluster than your original impression. "Only an inline 4? But those things looked huge..."

Ultimately, they serve a point of inflating something that is normally acceptable, but fun to fantasize about. An inexpensive adornment to your beige everyday companion.

But for the few that have the cash to support something more vuluptuous in their life, they can buy the real thing. The side pipes on the Viper are sexy as hell, and oh yeah...They're real.

I really don't understand the obsession with stylized tips.

OTOH - I also don't understand the obsession amongst some that the tips be physically connected with the exhaust. Connected = hot protruding object to burn kids accessing the trunk. Connected = expensive repair when the rear bumper is bumped.

Not even close. Ignoring that these come on the car from the factory, fake scoops, wings, etc. are all about trying to "look fast" because a sports car would actually need those things. These have no analog to sports cars, race cars, or anything. They're purely a design element. I hate Pep Boys cosmetic add ons as much as anyone but it dilutes their terribleness to include legitimate design cues alongside them.

As far as the tips on this car, I'm ok with it. On the IS-F it bugs me because of the gap between the pipes and the tips and because the car is so expensive. At least on this car the pipes and tips are mated. Actually, they seem more like exhaust pipe surrounds than anything, because the pipe goes right through them. Sort of like a chrome bezel on a watch or something.

Coming from the motorcycle world where dual exhausts are quickly tossed out in favor of a lighter weight 4 into 1 setup as soon as the papers are signed....

I could care less if they are fake\looks only. It looks good. People think nothing of getting a spoiler on their car and rarely do people complain.
too each there own.

I'd rather see single centerline exhaust but that's just me.
