White Long-Termers = More Photogenic?

whitecars.jpg

Just parked the 2010 Honda Accord Crosstour this morning and hey look, all white cars. Actually, if we were to corral all our white long-termers together we'd also have to include the Cruze and Outlander Sport. Oh, and if you want to count it in, the totaled '94 Miata.

Oddly enough, silver (the world's most popular car color according to Dupont) is only on 5 of our long-term cars. I wondered why we have so many white cars and figured it was because maybe they photographed better but when I asked our photographer, Kurt Niebuhr, about that he just replied: "Ha! No, we don't have any say in the colors of the car we are given, or buy for LT cars. We don't even have a say in the color of the short term cars we test. I noticed the line-up of long term white-ness down in the garage, too!"

So there goes that theory. Personally I used to think White was reserved for rental cars but I really like it on our VW GTI and Mazda 2.

I believe that is an Outlander Sport on the left?

I believe for 2009 white was most popular color but also for US white I believe is more popular.

Actually look at that link. So yes white is most popular in the US:

"Differentiated Regional Markets In North America, white/white pearl retained its lead for the fourth year in a row, with 21 percent popularity share. "

White is better then silver but it still shows a lack of imagination.

Or perhaps that most people are afraid to stand out from the crowd.

when did this happen?

Yeah I usually think "rental" when I see white, but it does look good on a lot of the LT fleet cars. Still, I think the wall of white kinda mirrors the general lack of excitement in the fleet at the moment. Looking at the list of upcoming fleet additions, I'm sure that won't last long.

@rod
That is an Outlander Sport. I think she just got the two Outlanders confused. Two white Outlanders would be easy to confuse.

I did a tally and you have 6 white cars, 5 silver ones, 2 blue ones (albeit different shades), 2 gray, and one of each black, green, red, and that bronze color in the Volvo. So silver/gray and white cars make up more than half the LT fleet. Nothing wrong with those colors, but a little more variety would be good.

The GTI would be Candy White and the Mazda2, Crystal White Pearl, which are a bit less flat and dull than the typical white enamel.

That happened, oh maybe last September, if I'm not mistaken. It was rear-ended, apparently the insurance company totaled it.They replaced it with a BRG '97 Miata.

It's okay on the gti but really bland on the others. And the gti would be better in a more interesting color too.

Yeah, this has been driving me nuts about your purchases (and about American cars in general). I'd rather see any color on the road, I'm so sick of white, gray, and black cars. Are we really so afraid to stand out that we only want vehicles in shades of gray?

For some of us, choosing a white or silver car has nothing to do with being afraid of standing out or lacking imagination. I chose silver because I cannot garage it and it looks clean much longer than darker colors, shows fewer scratches, and is less prone to fade as it ages. I think there can be a genuine aesthetic appeal to silver/grey, since it actually resembles metal unlike bright reds, yellows, oranges that somehow remind me of cheap plastic. White? Well, not sure why it's popular, but a friend of mine prefers it because he thinks it is utilitarian.

I like the white on the GTI, but it would definitely be better in another color. Compacts can get away with bright colors.

First thing that popped into my head when I saw this picture is Sir Mix-a-Lot's "Baby Got Back," but in truth, I really hate the big butt on the Crosstour--shudder--so fugly. The others are okay though.

Most whites are easy to repaint if the car is wrecked, it doesn't matter which way the color gets laid down unlike metallics. White cars do show dirt really well unfortunately. '
I like the GTi in white as it becomes more of a graphical element.

I have never preferred white for a car because of general aesthetics and the fact that they show dirt and road spray so easily. Same picture with black, they are terrible to keep clean.

Then one day long ago I located on my local VW dealer's lot a new 1985 GTI that was equipped perfectly for me, had everything I wanted and no equipment that I was trying to avoid. It wasn't silver, it was that model year's white. But it wasn't kitchen appliance white or even copier paper white, it had an ivory cast to it that looked warm and inviting instead of harsh and severe.

So I bought the car and lived happily with it for another eighteen years, it was the best car I will ever own. The muted shade of white did not show the road spray as quickly, and it cleaned up well, and the car was attractive to look at. A number of people commented over the years that the unusual shade worked very well on that car.

Of course two model years later that color was gone, replaced by a routine Refrigerator white, and later A2 GTIs did not look as appealing in white.

Still, I can see white as a good choice in many southern latitude markets.

Not related to this story but... I used to have a red Accord when I was in Oregon. A little balck-ish but the color went really well with the car. The trouble was, it usually cooked inside the car when the sun try to fry the the car during the summer days. I always had trouble to cool down the car before I rode on.
Then, one day, I happened to touch a white car side-by-side under the sun and, OMG, was that a difference! From then on, my choice was always either white or gray regardless of the car choices. Perfectly practical choices.

Yeah, white’s nice in hot areas… but it gets dirty very easily. I know people with black cars complain about that a lot, but I think white’s much worse.

As for being photogenic, I’d say black cars are harder to shoot than most.

my all time favorite "blends" of white - Honda's championship white and Mazda's crystal white pearl, which unfortunately wasn't available in the US on the 07 MS3.

Other than that, I tend to prefer a medium to dark gray because it shows body line contrast than other colors.
(pretty sure I butchered the English on that last part but this new prescription medication has me feeling a little cloudy, so w/e)

The Outlander Sport looks absolutely terrible in white; that color highlights the busy, overwrought "sculpting" around the rocker panels and under the front/rear bumpers.

teampenske, thanks. Interesting, I didn't even realize they replaced it. I looked at the last post on the miata (stoptech brake lines) and just assumed it was the same vehicle.

My S-10 is white, and it's my biggest complaint about that truck. Unfortunately, it was the only one I could find equiped the way I wanted (most importantly with a 5-spd). I hate the lack of color on todays roads. You look at the color lists for most cars and it's white, black, three shades of silver, beige, and if your lucky a bland dark blue or red. I think people nowadays, while saying they want to stand out, are really afraid to truly do so. When I get the time/money, I plan to have my S-10 painted that sunset orange metallic (or whatever GM called it) with some black or gun metal grey stripes and matching fender flares and bumpers.
