2010 GMC Terrain: Gettin' The Tree

Tree-on-Terrain-2.jpg

Sunday was Christmas Tree Day at the Oldhams. And that's our just plucked 10-footer atop our long-term 2010 GMC Terrain.

Now I know what you're thinking: How could you be so cruel and put that big tree on the roof of the Terrain without a protective blanket or something? And you're right, normally I wouldn't have done such a stupid thing but the Z06 was already signed out for the weekend.

Jokes aside, the Terrain was perfect for this kind of task. And it performed other family duties perfectly all weekend, which is of course job one of a vehicle like this.

it's 11 F outside as I sit next to our tree typing this. shorts and Christmas trees do not equate in MA.

also, we set the tree on top of our Sienna sans blanket this year - I cringed at the sound when unloading it. must remember blanket next year.

Note to next owner:

Merry Early X-mas, I scratched the roof for you ahead of time so you dont get that sick feeling then you do it the first time.

Really? Scratching the roof of another innocent car. I get it Scott you're a bad boy... ooh!

Would you do that with your wife's Mazda?

Since you do this with a long term car each year, I'm curious - would you do this to the paint on your personal car?

@exnevadan- Hah, I was thinking the same thing. It's a balmy 18 here in NH. The shorts and short sleeves on that guy gave me a bit of a laugh.

SOP at HD says that non management emps can where walking shorts all year around. You would be amazed how many do even when it is cold outside.

I see a lot of teenage girls in shorts, even now in Upstate NY where we have already had about 2 feet of snow (typically very little in Dec.) and the temperatures have been below freezing for the past week or so. Mostly these girls are walking alongside their bundled up moms.

I haven't had anything on my car roofs since about 1980, when I loaded multiple sheets of 4 X 8 chipboard onto the roof of my '78 LeMans coupe, decided I didn't need to tie them down since it was only a few blocks to my home, opened the driver's window, grabbed onto the chipboard and started for home.
It all went wrong at the first stop light. I was going very slowly, but I had not thought about friction vs. one of the laws of physics (an object in motion....)
I quickly let go of the chipboard, thereby saving my hand, and calmly watched while each sheet, one by one, slid forward, bounced once on the hood, and gracefully fell into a neat pile in front of the car. No real damage to the car, and a trucker helped me get them back onto the roof and tied down.

Oh, you may refrain from reading the above story if you might find it boring. I just love telling it.

The inevitable scratches on the roof are probably going to affect the aerodynamics enough to make it impossible to hit the 32 MPG EPA highway rating now. Nice going, Scott.

Does this thing have the cross-bars on the roof racks? That should minimize how much scratching happens on the roof.

Heh, we put our 5 footer inside our Taurus wagon. How's that for not caring what it does to the car?

And Southern California experienced a bit of a heat wave, even by our standards, this past week. It is cooling down now, but we had a couple days in the 80s. It felt weird even to this Southern California native.

And sadly cut-your-own-tree lots are a dying breed around here, and they weren't great to begin with due to the climate anyway. And if they're going to be shipped down anyway, why not pick it up from the Home Depot?

"Heh, we put our 5 footer inside our Taurus wagon."

I've got you beat- I put an 8 footer in our X3.
