2010 GMC Terrain: A Nice Subtlety and A Bizarre Occurrence

 IMG_0245.JPG See that little relief in the top of the center console? That's an easy detail to get right. It's there to allow the auxilliary or iPod cable to pass through without getting pinched. But I just spent a week in a $75,000 Cadillac which failed this test. And my aux cable is still upset.

Something weird after the jump...

 IMG_0250.JPG

This just in from the Bizzaro Department: Last night when I jumped in the Terrain to head home I noticed the clock was an hour ahead. Not a big deal. I corrected it before I parked in my driveway.

But this morning when I got in to leave for a pre-dawn bike ride it was an hour ahead again. So, again, I reset it to the correct time. Then I parked and rode my bike for two hours. Sure enough, when I got home, I noticed it was an hour ahead.

So I reset it a third time. And cycled the key. This time it stuck. But I don't have confidence it's solved.

Sounds like an issue with the timing chain. ;)

Check the user set-up. Not sure if the Terrain has this or not, but my car has a setting to update the time automatically (via satellite) and it's based on the time zone I'm in. So, maybe this car automatically updates as well and the time zone is off. Just a thought.

This problem has been brought up before, +1 on checking the manual to see if there is an auto-update function that keeps happening.

Also look for a DST On/Off button. Still, that's weird. Wasn't there a previous post about a stereo head unit not keeping the time?

My STS has a feature to set the time for daylight savings and it has to be turned of manualy when DST is over. I also remember seeing something about the stereo not keeping correct time.

My 6 gets this right as well, although there's nothing in there except a power port. Still, I like this nifty little detail.

Dont any of the IL editors consult the owners manuals of the cars they drive? I'm 99.999% sure that there is an explanation for how the time is set in the owners manual. yet this is the second editor/second time this issue has been stated in a week.

Now, how many $75K caddies are out there? The Escalade and the CTS-V? I couldn't imagine kvetching about a cut out for a $5 cable in a CTS-V.

Sorry all, Im feeling grumpy today!

That's not how you spell "bizarro."

Thanks,

Whether or not the time issue is simply a "Read the manual" issue, the radio stations changing IS a problem.

IL bloggers have been griping about the possessed audio system numerous times. Why don't they take it into the dealer and have them check it out for crying out loud?

The Caddy engineer responsible for that little cutout drives a new Terrain I hear. He arrived for the meeting to discuss his cutout idea an hour early and thought he missed it so it never happened.

True story.

@tmathes:

X2. This is not the first time it's been spoken about. I'm not sure why editors continue to complain when all they need to do is attempt a visit to the dealer. Hopefully the tech won't decide they need to open a hole in the roof to fix it (referencing the Viper's hatch strut incident).

tmathes says:

As I suspected, there appears to be a TSB to fix the issues they're seeing. It's a software update, covered by TSB 09-08-44-020B. Getting that update wouldn't be as much fun as griping about the same thing every 4-6 posts though.

@tmathes:
Didn't you also point that out previously as well? The only way you could make this easier is by bringing a tech to the IL office to make the repair.

@itbeatswalkin - I don't think Apple sells any cables for $5. Anyway, when you get down to it, this is about an average-Joe class car having a feature that's actually useful but not available on the company's top-of-the-line luxury vehicle.

itbeatswalkin says:

@ fushigi

Not everyone with an MP3 player has an ipod! But thanks for the heads up.

fushigi says:

True enough. I don't any Apple products.

The point remains, though, that it costs little to engineer the cutout and nothing extra to manufacture. It's a convenience feature that ought to be available across the board.
