2009 Audi A4 Avant: Squirt

The best feature on our Audi A4 Avant is the revenge squirters. The windshield sprayers shoot straight out sideways. Perfect for getting drivers back who do stupid things near you. Or to wake up texters who are next to you at a red light.

Seriously though, somehow these got misdirected and make cleaning the windshield difficult. I tried to readjust them by hand but I couldn't see into the well below the window. I'll let Mike know so we can get them looked at during its next service visit.

Ick! I hate it when washers get misdirected. The best way I've found to adjust them is to use a pin or sewing needle, and basically take your time adjusting, test spray, adjust.

Donna,

Are the washer jets spraying out from two little nubs on the top of the hood, or are they built into the plastic cowl that's at the base of the windshield? If they are built into the plastic trim, they are a lot more difficult to adjust than the old style ones that you could just stick a pin in and move. Even though the ones in your video are spraying out sideways, it still doesn't look like they would normally have enough pressure to reach the top of the wiper path.

Also, I appreciate a wiper washer that can really douse the windshield with cleaner. I'll use a bottle of Windex as an example. Yours in the video seem to be set on "stream" while the ones in my HHR are set on "spray." The whole window gets a nice wide spritz. It's great.

Yeah I noticed my 05 CTS-V really sprays the entire windshield way more evenly than the old school jet squirters. Really surprised me the first time I used it. It also sprays the headlights if they are on when I do the windshield, which I have yet to try.

I also like the windshield wiper arm mounted squirters, especially the dual ones that GM used in the early to mid 2000s on some cars.

Did not know that anyone was still using the little squirters that sprayed 2 little streams on each side. Every car I've driven since the late 90's sprays the entire windshield. I agree that the GM wiper mounted sprayers are the best.

No. Some other German manufacturers have more impressive sprayers. Too bad they can't be adjusted to squirt at pedestrians or other flying objects though. With my previous cars, I realized that sometimes wax somehow got on the darn thing and pretty much blocked the hole.

Different manufacturers seem to just go with diff washers. I've always enjoyed rentals with a fine mist spray - but I've found they usually work better when the outdoor temperature is higher and are better as windshield cleaner.

It might be the sort of wiper fluid, but the mist seems to not "de-ice" and freeze more readily.

Neither really breaks or makes a car - but it is interesting to think about the design details.

There could be dirt in the fluid that clogged or redirected the spray. Happened to me on my 3. They shoot compressed air into the tube to try and dislodge it.

Interesting. The A4 gets so much praise in the long term blog posts. Without going back through all the posts, it seams the only complaints have been wiper related.

Agreed that the mist sprayers have better coverage, but they don't work very well at highway speeds.

i would think the main reason for the A4 having the jet sprayers vs the wiper mounted sprayers is that most models come with heated washer nozzles.
