2009 Dodge Viper SRT-10 or 2010 Volkswagen GTI: Decisions, Decisions.

Viper GTi.jpg

200 horsepower v. 600 horsepower. Four seats v. two seats. Rear drive v. front drive. Turbo or N/A. Pretty solid iPod connection or an antique Confuse-o-tron-5000 radio. Non-disableable traction control or complete freedom.

I've got a weekend full of nothing and a decision to make: The keys to the GTI are already in my hand, but the Viper...that orange tempmtress....is just sitting there waiting for someone to steal the keys. That someone, I think, should be me.

Oh, one last thing, it's raining in LA this weekend,

What would you do?

Is this even a serious question???

I love the GTI as much as the next guy... So much so that I own one. But if anyone would take the GTI over a viper for a WEEKEND, they're stupid. Nuff said

What the hell kind of question is that Mike!? I am so totally taking you off my X-Mas card list! There is only one possible choice here and it is the car that can spell its own name! POOOOOWWWWWWWWWWWWEEEEEERRRR!!!!

zcalvert says:

depends on the weather. if you're stuck with rain the entire weekend, no point in driving the viper

Viper -- and take it out of town.

Steal the Elise.

I've never driven a viper but think it must be a bit of a pain to drive. Definitely a great car if you want to be a show off.

GTI. Would never even bother with the Viper.

Trying to think of a reason to take the GTI over the Viper...

It's snowing...

Someone offered me a free LED LCD Tv if I just picked it up...

My date showed up with her twin sister..

firstwagon, thanks for the laugh.

Seriously, though, this isn't even debatable. It's a VIPER!

Should I go on a date with the cute girl up the street...or a hot supermodel? I dunno, that's a though one.

I am a VW/Audi guy so I had to think about this for 5 seconds. You better have taken the Viper or your man card will be revoked. Your LA Rain (shower really) won't last ALL weekend, head East a bit and drive that 600 HP beast like it should be driven. Everybody who Visits this site should have this as an easy choice. We all would make a trip to the Library, Sandwich shop or wherever just to drive this $80K+ car, free gas I am sure too - no brainer.

kernals12 says:

take the GTI, it's much better for a highway trip
here's why
1. Comfortable Ride
2. Quiet Interior
3. Interior Versatility
4. Comfortable Seats
5. Better Size for Zipping Around Traffic
6. Better Fuel Economy

And if the guy who took the viper insults you, just make fun of how he's shaking, considering how bad the viper rides

firstwagon says:

"And if the guy who took the viper insults you, just make fun of how he's shaking, considering how bad the viper rides"

and just ignore the endless smiles and giggles of all the fun he's having... after all you're more comfortable and that's what matters.

throwback says:

The GTI is pedestrian compared to the Viper. 10 years from now when cars like the Viper have been banned by the EPA, you will wish you took every opportunity to drive one.

+1 firstwagon

Seriously, on any limited basis weekend vehicle I couldn't imagine not taking the fun choice. Long term speaking there isn't a chance I'd spend that kind of money on a Viper if it was my *only* car, but come on. A weekend with a random car and a Viper is way at the top of my list.

Vipers are for picking up a child at an elementary--an outlet for everyday frustration on the way to behaving like responsible adults and/or making other adults envious.

blueguydotcom says:

A buddy has a Viper. It's stupid fast. He barely takes it out of his garage as he has a wife and kids. So do I (well one kid and a wife). The viper could be fun for a drive home. Then the next morning my wife will want to go to breakfast. The viper will just sit in the driveway. And be there all weekend. I would get to drive it from work to home and from home to work 2 days later. Thus, no interest...

hybris says:

Take the Viper. You can afford to buy a GTI if you really want to but you have free gas and access to a $90K+ car that's no longer made its a chance few mere mortals will get.

kurtamaxxxguy says:

Get the Viper, then some time on your local race track before it dries out. Drifting paradise awaits you!

diondi says:

Get the Viper. It's a weekend car.

The GTI is the daily car.

huyracing says:

i have a GTI and a 300ZX Twin Turbo and i rarely ever drive the Z. this would be no different if i had a Viper or a Ferrari instead of the Z. ideally, i would like a lamborghini parked next to my GTI, but again it would rarely be driven. i work weekends, so while everyone is out cruising, i'm out commuting... so GTI all the way. i have random days off during the week and i'm usually too tired to leave the house, let alone climb into the Z for a cruise... if i do go anywhere, i take the comfortable ride.

huyracing says:

06:37 PM, 10/ 3/10

oh and look how hot the GTI looks...

majin_ssj_eric says:

06:44 PM, 10/ 3/10

You have a 300ZX TT and you drive the GTi instead? WTF is wrong with you?

firstwagon says:

Everyone gets old.

desmolicious says:

08:14 PM, 10/ 3/10

This is like asking who is hotter:

1/ Margaret Thatcher
2/ Jessica Biel

huyracing says:

08:15 PM, 10/ 3/10

i have to question anyone who has to ask because they simply can't understand. many hardcore car enthusiasts who actually own these "cool" cars don't drive them... they are rare and expensive to own... and not the most comfortable thing to drive. i constantly get props from ferrari and lamborghini owners... and they tell me they always wanted one and they still do, but its too much trouble so they just get a lamborghini/ ferrari instead. Supra TT and NSX also fall into that category. i would do the same, if i had that kind of money, knowing how much trouble these cars are.

and the GTI is more fun to drive than the Z. i have about 300hp/ 350tq in the GTI, so its pretty fun. even without power, the handling rocks on the GTI.

majin_ssj_eric says:

11:03 PM, 10/ 3/10

If the GTi is more comfortable, cheaper, more reliable, and more fun to drive than the 300ZX, why do you even have it in the first place? I highly doubt that 300hp to the front wheels is as fun to drive as 300hp to the rear wheels and the 300ZX has one of the best handling chassis ever made....

church123 says:

11:18 PM, 10/ 3/10

+1 on majin_ssj_eric's question. I'm surprised that the GTI is more fun, but fun is subjective, so I'll take it at face value. I do understand that the Z32 can be a real bitch maintenance wise - even changing the valve cover gaskets is a pain, so I can relate to limiting the mileage.

But it does raise the question - is the 300ZX in the process of being restored? Still in a partially finished state? Not where you want it? I have a hard time imagining that even a lightly tuned 300ZX TT in good condition wouldn't be more fun to drive than a GTI at least _some_ of the time (open road, canyon run, etc.). I go through dry spells where I don't drive my S2000 for awhile - sometimes several weeks at a time - but when I get back into it I realize I missed it so much that I typically have to drive it a few days straight (commuting, shopping, whatever) to get my fix.

bimmerjay says:

Ok, I think the Viper is essentially a piece of crap that somehow manages to be a car but I'd still take it for the weekend versus the GTI, at least once.

huyracing says:

07:06 AM, 10/ 4/10

The Z is great and it is a fine example of a Z, but it is a 20 year old car. I am not sure how the chassis was 20 years ago, but today it is not very stiff. Modern cars are extremely stiff, so I highly doubt it is comparable. I have a 300ZX TT because it is one of my dream cars. best handling chassis 20 years ago maybe, but not today. its a heavy pig of a car with a soft chassis, so I don't think its all that great.

As for the GTI, I don't get how people think it doesn't handle well. I have embarassed so many people in "better handling cars" when it was bone stock. Driver skill difference? Sure... and that is what I like about it. It allows a good driver to play at the limits and I'm usually embarassing people with one hand on the wheel. Sure I would get passed/ left behind on straights, but more power fixes that... and grippy tires and a foot with more settings than on/ off help with the traction.

It is great fun to run down Porsche's or Lotus' (Loti?) in a GTI because they have too much pride to let me pass on the straights. It is a rule on open track days to let the faster DRIVER pass. If they don't get kicked off the track for that bad behavior, I eventually get them in a turn and its all that much sweeter.

+1 to skyggge. for me its a toss-up between the Elise and the Viper.
