Last night I drove our long-term 2010 Chevy Camaro SS home (nine miles on surface streets) and noticed it needed gas, so this morning I filled it up. It took 13.389 gallons after having been driven only 179 miles. That averages to just 13.4 mpg.
Those 179 miles must have all been covered in the city, but still.

And probably not one of edmunds drove it slow. I bet every time they could they would punch it.
Its a 426hp muscle car, people are going to drive it hard and it will eat gas.
Case closed.

Look on the bright side. You're probably getting a lot better mileage than you would an old Camaro.

That is all

Yea! You see, if I was the guy who would buy this sort of a car I probably wouldn't about gas money, the problem is that if the consumption doesn't "hurt'' my wallet it will sure hurt me as a driver. No problem, to pay the gas, the problem is that I WILL always have to think about the nearest gas station and I am sure, it will efing annoy me that I gotta stop every 200 miles to gas up..

Holy shnikes! That's pretty horrible. The 'pay to play' philosophy definitely comes in here.

I have a similar issue with my RX-8. Granted it doesn't have 426hp V8 but I average between 180-250 miles per fill-up. Lowest MPG on a tank I experienced was 13.3 and the best I was able to eek out was 22.3 MPG. I guess it just comes with the territory. And yes, it does get annoying, particularly on long trips. What I am not especially fond of is that the fuel light comes on when I have only about 2 gallons left, giving me at best 44 miles to find a gas station. I tend to shy away from trips too far out in the sticks because of this.

I agree with @vt8919.
Back in the 60's when the Mustang and Camaro were introduced, drivers bragged about how much gas their cars used. But then, gas was $0.25-$0.35 per gallon.
The recent mileage for Edmund's Camaro is on par with my past 1984 Chevy G10 Van (305 cu. in.) and past 1999 GMC Savanah 3500 (350 cu. in.).

That sounds about right for a V8 around town. Where I live there are so many stoplights that even with AFM/DoD whatever you want to call it, I get about 14 from G8 GT. One of many reasons I ride my bike to campus all the time. On the highway it is much better, from 23 - 28 depending on winds and how fast I'm going.

In my G8 GT, over 52K miles of driving, I have averaged 21.5 mpg. Granted 65% is highway, but even in the city, I have never fallen below 16 mpg. Short trips when the engine is cold is a killer on mileage, as my wife's 5.3 2WD Trailblazer only gets 13. She only drives in the city and the engine never goes in to closed loop mode when she goes to work two miles away.

Geez...
The mileage, I understand. It's the price to pay for such a monster car.
The range between fill-ups, however, I can't. If you're going to build a car that guzzles gas like that one, give it a bigger gas tank. It almost feels like you're going to spend more time at gas stations than enjoying the car.

I have no problem with the mileage... big engine, huge HP, heavy car, editors driving it, no surprise.. :)
My beef is advertising. Saw an ad recently that proudly displayed the Camaros HP and the hwy mileage figure. They love to show that you can have all this and great mileage, 426HP AND 24MPG!
Most of us are smart enough to know they are lying (or at least bending the truth) it's still false advertising IMHO.

3.05/gal for reg gas? Here in Eastern Canada, I am paying $1.10/litre, or $4.14 for a US gal (3.76 litres), which is $5.00 for a Can gal (4.54 litres).

This mpg number sounds low, but there's no baseline to say if it's good or bad. On this same drive cycle, what kind of fuel economy would other cars get. "City" driving varies so much.
I have a '00 Camaro (LS1 6spd) and generally get around 24mpg and up to 29 on longer road trips. If you keep the engine speed down, these cars get pretty good fuel economy. Drive aggressively and don't use 6th gear and you'll get much lower mpg.
jacton says:

you have to pay to play! If you have a lead foot and a 6.2L V8 don't complain aboutr MPGs.

Firstwagon: I've had that gripe for a while. The focus on highway mileage is almost false advertising, it IS deceptive. Unless you have a highway commute in Montana, highway mileage is far less important to the average driver than city mileage or combined.

what's surprising about that? with an EPA city figure of 16mpg you can rest assured that 13.4 is possible. I routinely averaged 14-15mpg in city driving with an EPA rating of 17 city.

Yikes. Certainly bad milage...
But a bit of perspective is probably called for. Compare similar performance levels: an Evo, a 335i, an STi and a Mustang GT. Around town and driven likewise, I doubt the camaro is more than 1-2 mpg off the rest. It's heavy and has a motor that uses a lot of fuel just to idle.
A turbo V6 and a diet are what's needed.

Don't forget to count the mpg-reducing effect of ethanol-"enriched" gas. Poor mileage is a given and "by design" (of state tax revenue collectors) when it comes to CA blended gas with ethanol content.
Only a few locations still remain across the USA where "real gas" is still available at the pump, where performance engines can still yield reasonable mpg plus great performance.
