2010 Chevrolet Camaro: Still Love the Seats

camaro_seat.jpg

If there's one thing Chevrolet (or Holden, I suppose) really nailed with the Camaro, it's the driver seat. The seat is pretty wide with a long seat-bottom cushion to accommodate drivers of various sizes, yet it's still very supportive. The cushioning is firm. The lateral bolstering is functional. And I can sit in the seat for hours without getting uncomfortable. Tell me again why I can't have a slightly more compact version of this seat in the Corvette.

Hey, that seat looks familiar! I wonder if it is the exact same one (except that mine have the red inserts) as what I have in my G8. I agree Erin, why isn't this seat in the 'Vette?

Heh, when you read the 2010 Camaro brochure there's (from memory) no mention of Australia at all. In fact to our knowledge, in Australia the only thing in the Camaro that IS actually Australian is the chassis and that's it. The rest is from the U.S., Canada or Mexico.

Erin,

I am in complete agreement. I can drive my camaro for hours. Seats are very comfortable. Mine are cloth, but plan to do katzkins in the future. I believe im going to do leather with suede inserts.

I was going to do it earlier, but i bought a supercharger instead. Nothing says fun like 600hp.

too bad the rest of the cabin isnt as nice...

seats from other cars supposedly wont easily fit in the vette. camaro is 4 years newer than the Vette and thus has better seats. I would expect the next Vette to have all new and far superior seats. Are those seats really from the G8?

"too bad the rest of the cabin isnt as nice..."

rest of the cabin is as nice as other coupes that start less than $25k. That kind of gets lost in all the interior bashing that goes on with this car. Its not nice compared to an S5 but that's to be expected considering the price.

PS: its very rare for cars that arent on the same platform to share the same seat design. If it was a simple excercise to drop the CTS-V or Camaro seats in the Vette I'm sure it would have been done by now. Its also very rare for seat design to change before a car is redesigned. If anyone has any examples I'd like to hear them.

Because GM is the corporate parent.

@1487 IIRC the sirocco and the passat/cc share the same seats but that's the only one I can think of

I also agree with Erin. When I first sat in the new Camaro at a car show, the first thing that struck me was how comfortable the seat was. I was really impressed, and I immediately wished these seats were in the Corvette too.

@smrtypants44,

Both the Sirocco and the Passat/CC are essentially on the same platform, with the Passat/CC using a stretched version of the Jetta platform (which in turn is a slightly stretched wheelbase version of a Golf/Sirocco). The previous generation Passat used the same platform as the B6 A4, but changed over to a transverse platform for the 2005+ MY.

The fact that the Camaro has nice comfy seats is undermined a lot by the realization that you are sitting in a 400+ horsepower car that you can't really see out of properly. Kind of makes you drive very.... carefully.

I have driven my nephew's 2SS many times and I am really glad that he has added hand controls (he is a paraplegic) so that he can now drive it himself. Of course, driving someone else's 40K new car will also cause one to drive carefully.

You would, why is that? The poor seat design has been a standing complaint for the past 3 generations of Corvette, the flagship car for GM. If they didn't finally correct this with the C6, what makes you expect that they will with the C7?

@fuhteng Except the Camaro doesn't make you twist a hard to reach knob to adjust the seat back!

Exactly. The C6 WAS the opportunity to make decent seats and they failed. The complaints were there when the C5 came out and GM did little to fix it, despite improving the rest of the interior. I would certainly expect the C7 to fix the problem, but who knows if they will. Fat guys apparently like the Corvette's seats.

@bimmerjay- Do you ever see a Corvette not being driven by a fat(ish) mid age or older guy? I know that I sure don't, so mission accomplished.

pay attention to the last 5 years of GM vehicle introductions and then tell me if you think the next gen vette wont be improved in every way. Come on man. The old Vette's couldnt generate anywhere near the grip of the current C6 so I'd imagine the seats werent a major issue. Seats overall werent as well bolstered or adjustable when the C4 and C5 were out so don't even go there. All that matters is how those seats measured vs the competition at the time.

What % of Corvette owners hate the seats and consider them unacceptable? I know that people that hate the vette hate the seats but you don't hear what actual owners think. Most vette owners drives these cars on the STREET and the primary complaint from reviewers is that the seats are not up to the track capability of the chassis. On a track they are likely an issue. Regular driving? Doubt it. Based on the fact that GM put Recaros in a Cobalt in 2006 I'm pretty sure the next vette will have better seats.

^^
This has to be the answer to Erin's question. GM is clearly capable of designing or buying a decent seat, so they must think the Corvette's target market is satisfied with the current design.

So are the Camaro's intended buyers younger and fitter?

How bout this: is there anyone here from the Vette forums/owners club that can vouch for the Vette's seat comfort (or lack thereof?)

1487 says:

12:24 PM, 09/14/10

new platforms usually get new seats and the Camaro is the only US product with these seats. I'm sure they took lessons from the Vette's seats into consideration when designing these seats. I'd expect the C7 to reflect what has been learned with the C6.

bankerdanny says:

1487, I hope you are right. I am a fan of the 'Vette and have been for over 30 years. I would love a C5 or C6 'Vette (well, really I want a '68 chrome bumper convertable with a 427, side pipes and a 4-speed) and I doubt that the seats would stop me from buying one if I had the cash and inclination.

bimmerjay says:

@audisport,

Unfortunately the same could be said of a typical Porsche 911 or Cayman driver. Yet those cars have fabulously supportive, comfortable, and well-made seats. The Corvette's seats are rickety, upholstered in what appears to be imitation rubber, and feel squashy (technical term). They suck on the road and the track, I can't imagine why even fat people would like them, but I guess they do.

epbrown says:

Hmm, I wonder if the Camaro seats would fit in my Solstice. Anyone know?
