2008 Infiniti G37: A Reader's Long-Term Car

infiniti_g37_1.jpg

Sam, better known to you as IRVG37, sent us these photos of his 2008 Infiniti G37 Journey Coupe that has 15,000 miles on it. Here is what he has to say:

I absolutely love the VQ37VHR engine. I even love the harsh, strained NVH at 7K RPM. It's as spellbinding as trance and as powerful as the number that speaks for itself: 330 horsepower. Naturally aspirated.

To me, the G is so much more than just a 3 series alternative. It's the first and true threat to the technical excellence, engineering precision, and driving marvel that the 3 series has for so long taught us how to experience. The new VQ engine alone would make the G a great car, but it's the whole driving experience, the historical significance of the car that excites me everyday to be a proud owner of this awesome car.

This is my white G37 coupe, 2008 year model.

Nice, automatic or stick? My co-worker has a 2007 G37 coupe in gray.

My favorite non V8 exhaust note belongs to the G37/370Z.

Nice looking ride. The beauty is that now, car buyers have SO good many choices. The 3 series is not the only act in town!

PS- I love white pearl effect paint jobs- they really sparkle at dusk/dawn.

I really like the coupe when it has the 19s. They really enhance the look of the car.

I agree pearl white is a great color, minus the light interiors some manufacturers seem to force in them (im looking at you Acura). I even saw a pearl white crz on display at our state fair and it actually looked good in that color.

Haha, a little caught up in the moment, are we? =P Glad to hear you're enjoying the car, and nice choice on color.

So now NVH (emphasis on the 'H' since there's so much of it in the vq) is a good thing? Ive heard it all.....

- thanks for the notes - i was expecting some hate comments for my excessive love for my car :)

- it's the journey model (translation = auto). 6mt is $3K costlier.

- on nvh... honestly, i think journalists' accounts of faults & merits of any car tends to get a bit exaggerated, and vq37vhr's nvh is one example. i'll tell you - it's certainly not as smooth as, say, lexus' 4.3-liter 3uz-fe v8, which is probably one of the best examples of an engine w. minimal nvh; the vq37vhr really aint bad at all. what is bad enough to make u cringe is nissan's qr25de that they put in altimas and rogues... now that engine is rough.

I have always been a huge fan of the Infiniti G. I drove a 350z and now an Altima SE-R. Its about time for me to find a new car and the G is an option. Call me crazy but I actually prefer the sedan to the coupe now. The sedan just looks better to me, has more room, much bigger trunk, costs less, AND is lighter believe it or not.

Hmm to buy a 2005-06 boxster or Z4 and keep my altima or buy a used 335i convertible or lease a new G sedan or 135i convertible? Ive been wanting a new car for years but now that its actually time to make a decision wow is it hard...

Beautiful car by the way.

Love the G37 Coupe, especially in white.

As for the power train, I've had an '07 G35 sedan (6MT) for about eight months and 12k now. The complaints about NVH with the (older/smaller) VQ35 six are certainly warranted. Throttle response and power are great, especially above 3500, but I've not driven a car with such a rough engine near red line. Of course this is one of the bigger motors in any of my cars, mostly small four cylinders until now, and it does rev to 7,500. Despite my utter distrust of Audi products (based on ten years of ownership) the 2.8 30V six in my old A4Q was silky smooth, though no where near as powerful and of course the fuel shut off at 6,500.

On the plus side, the manual transmission is great, though I'm still struggling with the clutch take up, and the rest of the vehicle is solid. It handles and rides well, has powerful brakes, and is very attractive (to my eyes). Great seats and good steering wheel - two parts you use every time.
