So which American sports car has the cooler gauges? I prefer the white on black of the Corvette's dails, but I'm still a bit cold on the needle dance Chevy makes you sit through every time you twist the Corvette's key. I also think the Viper's 220 mph speedometer is just a little silly.

I've never even considered a 'Vette until this blog started....hmmmmm. I'm starting to warm up to them a little.

Corvette! For one reason, actually: the markings on the speedo. They're every 10 MPH to 100 and then, for the same amount of space change to 20 MPH. This makes the dial much easier to read in the range that 99.9% of drivers drive 99.9% of the time.
Look at the Viper and maybe you're using 30% of the gauge. The Corvette is more like 50%.

I think the Corvette's gauges are nicer and provide more useful information, so they win my vote on this one. However, I have to admit, I am a sucker for center-mounted tachs!

Something looks wonky with the way the tach snaps back after the sweep on the Corvette's gauges. The speedometer doesn't do that. I wonder if there is something wrong with it?

Corvette is intuitive, so it gets my vote. I will agree that a center mount tach is nice, though.

Corvette by far. Watch the Viper video and see how much battery is used to start. The lights go very dim while turning over. Wonder if the battery is about to go.

Corvette for sure. Not only do you have great backlighting to make it easier to read, all the information you could need is presented. Plus, you have the Drivers Information Center, and then even a HUD for more info. Corvette wins over the Viper, no contest.

@majin_ssj_eric
My tach does the same exact thing on my 2004 Z06. It's weird, but its normal.
lostboyz says:

@foxgtr have you read the title? It said guages, not cluster.
As far as the dimming goes, you aren't using you guages when you are starting the car anyway, so also useless in this comparison.
Both are suitable, personally I'll prefer the viper.

Vette. I like the unimpeded look of the Vette's panel style guages to the pod style of the Viper.
Pods can look great (see the Miata), but in this case, the open panel works better I think.

Corvette for sure.
just think...you paid $80,000 for gauges in the Viper that look like they may have been in a Stratus or Sebring.
jeepsrt says:

I like the Vette's better, much easier to read. Also, why would a 220 mph speedo be silly on a car that is capable of getting close to 200 mph if not over 200 with some mod's?
hybris says:

I going to go with the Corvette its just a easier to read them at night and they don't look so cheap like the Viper does with its "Halo Effect" lighting.

The "needle dance" is what makes it cooler in my book. I'm not old enough to remember when manufacturers starting to do that, but if I'm correct; I believe it used to be something that only higher performance cars did. My wife's G6 does it, and I think it's lame in a car like that, but I'd totally like to see it in my Corvette.

I prefer the Corvette "gages" better, mainly because I do not like of black of white gauges particularly at night.
stingray454 says:

Corvette. Easier to read, looks cooler (hey, it's lit with black light, black light is always cool), more information available on the driver information console (digital display at the bottom). BTW, the video misses the first part of what happens when you turn the ignition on: the driver information console displays "CORVETTE... BY CHEVROLET" A bit campy, I know, but at least a little bit nifty.

Ok fine I'll take the Corvette's "gages".
The Viper's pods are stupid and the black-on-white is a cheesy fad holdover from late 90's Chryslers. No thanks.

I do find something cool about the Viper gauges. They are a tad fashionista, but also low-tech. Reminds me of the console-display in the x-wing fighters in Star Wars in the attack on the original Death Star. Not the targeting computer's graphics, but the actual console - it's just a splash of light on a screen, surrounded by odd bits of buttons. The Viper has that same feel to me - don't look too closely, but it all seems to work.
The Corvette's gauges are way easier to read. So, if I am going to drive rather than philosophize, it as to be the 'vette.

Viper. The Corvette gauges look like something that was used in the old Cadillac STS....*yawn*
Dodge cars typically had gauges modeled AFTER the Viper, not the other way around. Simple is better, wait until all that electronic stuff starts breaking on the Vette, you'll wish for something "simpler".

Corvette, for sure. I read somewhere that starting with the C5 (in 1997) GM used LED back lighting on the gauge cluster. At night, I find each pod actually appears to float, because they aren't perfectly flat against the background. Nice detail.

bahaha the stock guages in my 99 saturn sc2 are better than the vipers!!! it's even more dramatic because the computer is messed up and it likes to rev to 4000 before falling back to idle at about 1700

I'm really irritated by the trend towards pod-style gauges (such as those in the Viper). From the driver's seat, it feels like you're peering down tunnels to see the gauges. I do like the center-mounted tach on the Viper though.

I prefer a center mounted tach. You're not going to look at your speedo too often if you're on a track in a race. Most of the cars I like had center mounted tachs, Viper, 370Z, GT-R... cars that I find have boring tachs... like an M3, Corvette... Mercedes, it's all pretty average like pretty much every other car that most people on the road drive..
