How To Drive Like Edward Cullen

edward_cullen_volvo_xc60_717.jpg

You all know by now -- and thanks to a reader for reminding us -- that Edward Cullen is partial to Volvos. He drove a Volvo C30 in the Twilight movie and a gray Volvo XC60 in New Moon.

In the book, however, Edward drives a different car, a silver Volvo S60R. But the book came out in 2005 and that car was out of production so the movie producers went with a newer Volvo.

According to Stephenie Meyer's official Web site, she leans on her two car enthusiast brothers when making decisions about what her characters drive. They told her, for example, that Edward can't just drive the Volvo S60, it has to be the R.

Check out her site for a full list of vehicles from all of the Twilight saga books. They differ from the movies. But beware, if you haven't gotten through all of the books yet, there are some spoilers.

You're all avid Twilight readers, right?

So, if you were going to live forever, what would you choose to drive?

I'd still take the V70R over the s60r anyday

but who drives a volvo when they can live forever.

Who drives a Volvo, period?

If I was going to live forever, I'd probably drive an old Mercedes gullwing, or a classic Thunderbird hardtop with a big V8 dropped in it and the transmission from the old 5.0 Mustang. Definitely not something soft and oxymoronic like an S60 or any of it's other peers (535, M45, etc). Something that's analog, with a soul; instead of something that's built around the concept that driving is a difficult and messy business, and as such requires things like power steering, traction control, stability assist, airbags, GPS navigation, blind spot warning systems, automatic wipers, cup holders, seatbelts, Comfort Assist, cruise control, seat warmers, tire pressure monitoring systems, or friggin Bluetooth.

I am out of touch. I didn't know who he was but then after finding out nor do I care. Is the author Swedish?

jasond52 says:

So are you trying to say Edward Cullen wrecked the Volvo?

Never heard of the guy. I have heard about the movies but I prefer my Vampires in the classic genre. I did like Underworld though. As for a car to drive forever, I would go with a classic Mercedes or a '65 GTO.

What's "Twilight"?

eidolways says:

I'd drive exactly what I am driving: Pontiac G8 GXP. :)

mrb5091 says:

I like the tough guys pretending they don't know what twilight is.

I haven't read any of the books or seen any of the movies, but if you're not aware of the series or that there is a character named Edward you don't watch tv, read the news, or talk to women under 60.

joemt says:

If it had to be a Volvo, make it a P1800 or 164. MT only, of course. Otherwise, meh.

acbayard says:

If I were a gay vampire, why would I need to drive?

carguy622 says:

V70R! I also quite like the C30. If we're strictly talking Volvos.

Meanwhile, I am tired of hearing about Twilight.

ocramidajzj says:

Yeah I haven't read the books but I can't see a vampire choosing to drive a Volvo. Its not what I would call a sexy car. Maybe something Italian. This is the sort of product placement I'd expect from scion. Though scion is just as bland.

I would have chalked the Volvo thing up to a poor marketing tie in. But it sounds like miss Meyers already single out the manufacturer in the book.

Ferarri 365 GTB Daytona with a resto-modded 1976 Ford Bronco for the winter months.

If they're enthusiasts then a volvo doesn't make sense.

ed124c says:

Please, Donna, can't we have a moratorium on vampires on this site? I am a SciFi fan, and vampires are not supposed to be in SciFi. Vampires are a fantasy, sort of like me becoming able to buy a Bugatti Veyron.

e90_m3 says:

Don't vampires just fly around on a broom or something?

zcalvert says:

There is one Volvo I'd want:

One of the Paul Newman/David Letterman 960 wagons with supercharged Ford Racing 302's bolted in... now that's a sleeper.

sherief says:

I'd drive a Jaaaaaaaaaaaaaag.

I feel sad for middle aged women who seem to go crazy over this movie.

What a sad life to lead....

santiagofdz says:

@sherief LOL I f#%$ng love that bit in Top Gear....though they do mention the Jaaaag owner has to be a charming liked by all "bloke", not sure that's the case with Mr. Sparkly over there.

As for what I'd drive if I was immortal?... I'd drive the 458 or the Muira, they can catch fire if they want, I'm not going to die because of that. Or I could forgo 4 wheels for 2...bring on the Hayabusa!

feloniousmonk says:

Speaking of "immortals" and the cars they drive: didn't that Highlander guy drive an old T-bird in that crappy TV show? Also, what did Blade drive? IIRC, the Vampire in that old Kolchak: Night Stalker movie drove some faded red seventies beater around Vegas. And what about Barnabus Collins? Personally, if I were an undead creep, I'd drive Grandpa Munster's "Dragula" and go about tearing shat up. What're the cops gonna do? Arrest a freakin' vampire? Good luck with that! Since being a ghoul would most likely suck, I'd take my fun where I found it.

aznraptor says:

how about an old F1 car?(or that new lotus f1 car for the streets or that caparo T1 or something) or a bike since safety isn't an issue

250 GTO. And a Lusso.

jm1212 says:

what kind of enthusiasts are they that they would pick a VOLVO?

bimmerjay says:

I would drive a 2007 Saturn Aura XR.

And Jacob is way better.

old_volvo says:

V70R ... the last great car volvo ever made.
twilight ... the end of bad-ass vampires
Twilight + volvo = twinkly vampires in twinkly cars. Should of just put them in Cadillacs and been done with it.

allenychung says:

geokilla says:

Volvo 850R and S70R has my take. I'd take the S70 T5M as well.

@Volvo haters. Clearly you haven't seen how sporty some Volvos are.

co_05si says:

If I could live forever I would not waste time on a brand known for safety.

teampenske3 says:

First things first, Twilight is rubbish. The writing is awful and the plot is weak. Why everyone is going crazy over this book/movie is beyond me. I read the first two pages and it is trash. As for me, +1 to sherief, I'd drive a Jaaaaaaaaaaaag XFR.

teampenske3 says:

01:02 PM, 08/26/10

oh, yes and donna, you lost all respect from me by posting about Twilight. Just so you know.

BigFordFan150 says:

if i lived forever a air bag saftey box makes no sence..... i like v70r s tho they rock

eldaino2 says:

08:54 PM, 08/27/10

there are plenty of cool sporty volvos out there. and if you look at the list of whats featured in the book, its safe to say the cullens are enthusiasts ;)

whats rubbish is men who still dont get that if you indulge in what chicks dig, it only makes things better for you. if you dont know what twilight is, you dont speak to women PERIOD, because even the sixty year olds love it.

its not cinematic excellence, or even very compelling reading, but its a decent take on the vampire genre. everyone hating on it reminds me of when i was younger and how guys would hate leo decaprio in titanic because of the sheer amount of attention he got. silly really.

i would much rather be dragged to the movies to see this than a poorly written romantic comedy of all things.

oh...and team edward ftw ;)

"Speaking of "immortals" and the cars they drive: didn't that Highlander guy drive an old T-bird in that crappy TV show? Also, what did Blade drive?"

Highlander did pretty well on the immortal driving taste front. McLeod drove a 57 T-bird, his gf a Mercedes-Benz 220SE cab; in the French portion of each season he drove a black Citroen DS. Other immortals drove classic Bentleys, Rolls-Royces, and one an Aston Martin DB6.

Giles on Buffy had his Citroen DS destroyed by a vampire, and replaced it with a BMW E30 cab.

Blade, iirc, preferred motorcycles, but had a classic Camaro as well.

As an immortal, you should want something cool, old, and blatantly unsafe, so my pick is a Chevy Corvair convertible. ;)
