2010 Volvo XC60: A Sincere Idiot

volvo_idiot_1600.jpg

Have you ever wondered what it's like to do my job? Some days are great. Other days start off with a Post-It note like this on my keyboard. Have you also wondered why our 2010 Volvo XC60 is missing from the blog lately? Take the jump.

Imagine the damage if the concrete parking structure post had been moving when we struck it. Our preliminary damage estimate is over $4,000. We'll keep you posted on its progress.

Ouch! $4k damage for a bad parking job. How fast was the driver going to cause that much damage?

slickersdrip says:

So this is where Riz's arm injury came from?

desmolicious says:

03:28 PM, 08/11/10

Another one bites the dust.

Un-be-frickin-lievable.

kevm14 says:

03:36 PM, 08/11/10

Is there one or a group of employees that are responsible for all these accidents? Or is that just the way drivers are out there??

konocar400h says:

03:44 PM, 08/11/10

Ouch! If I may ask, how did you manage that? Isn't that directly in your line of sight or was is one of those annoying short ones that you can't see? Wow that is a good bit of damage there. But don't let anyone give you too much crap, it happens, as they say.

mjp16 says:

03:45 PM, 08/11/10

"Idiot" indeed... how do you get a scrape in that position? I might be slightly more understanding if the rear passenger quarter panel got scraped, but wouldn't a pole right in front of your sideview mirror be directly in view of the driver?

davicho says:

04:20 PM, 08/11/10

Sincerely Idiot,

City Safety only works if the obstacle is directly in front of you...LMAO!

ed124c says:

04:26 PM, 08/11/10

@mjp16: This is not a "scrape"-- a scrape does not involve replacing sheet metal, in my opinion.

"It's just a scrape" is something they say in wacky movies, where the car is probably totalled.

You have to admit, though, that Edmund's hangs out its laundry pretty honestly. I think it was Dan that said they have a large staff, and accidents happen.

But, it does seem like there are too many.

jaden82 says:

04:32 PM, 08/11/10

The way I think it happened...I'm guessing the volvo was parked next to a pillar and the driver forgot it was there while backing out and turned the steering wheel too soon?

cardesigner82 says:

04:55 PM, 08/11/10

Okay, you struck a parking structure post...yet, sustained damage to the door lock mechanism? I hope someone has posted the footage of this on some sort of video website. Yes, let's imagine the damage that would've been, if it were moving...every Volvo airbag would have deployed! Lol

acbayard says:

05:34 PM, 08/11/10

Judging from the denting on the front fender and the door, it is opinion that the Idiot had the door open, when the Idiot rammed the vehicle into the object.

Then said Idiot tried to close the door shut, fairly hard, and damaged the door against the locking ring.

Maybe the idiot was in a hurry to grab dry cleaning or fetch coffee, didn't shift the car into Park or apply the handbrakes, decided to run out of the car with the engine still on. Oops.

Hopefully the Idiot wasn't testing the collision avoidance system.

zcalvert says:

05:36 PM, 08/11/10

So who's the idiot... not fair to withhold that info.

sodaguy says:

05:51 PM, 08/11/10

@zcalvert: I guess the idiot would be the person who no longer works for edmunds. As a loyal daily reader, I have noticed that two editors no longer post on this blog, or anywhere on this site. Perhaps it is one of those individuals?

Mike, what happened to the Traverse? That car has been MIA for longer than the Volvo.

zcalvert says:

06:04 PM, 08/11/10

which two did you think were gone? maybe i wasn't paying enough attention... always seemed like they kind of posted stuff in waves.

not much on the fusion hybrid either lately.

toye says:

06:24 PM, 08/11/10

These people don't care because it's not their cars or insurance. I bet a million dollars that the accident rate on their own personal vehicle is much, much lower.

It seems like every vehicle that they purchase or they borrow gets into an accident. This doesn't impress me about the staff at Edmunds.

Tell me Mike is there a reprimand system for what appears as irresponsabilies. Perhaps the accident rate is higher because of the unfamilarity of driving so different vehicles?

hybris says:

06:49 PM, 08/11/10

This is surprising a Volvo hit something and the airbags didn't start going off.

I suddenly fear for the Raptor, Z06, Viper, and Miata.

carguy622 says:

07:00 PM, 08/11/10

It looks to me like the door catch / lock was damaged because the force of the impact caused the door to buckle outward by the latch. Just guessing here.

threemopars says:

07:57 PM, 08/11/10

"This is surprising a Volvo hit something and the airbags didn't start going off."

And why should it? Its obviously a low speed collision.

greenpony says:

08:04 PM, 08/11/10

My beloved did something similar to my special car. She tried playing chicken with the house. :-\

stovt001 says:

10:09 PM, 08/11/10

I'm gonna say unfamiliarity with the vehicles probably plays a fairly significant role in the frequency of collisions and scrapes, but even considering that this is a pretty frequent occurrence. However, knowing Santa Monica it is probably a fair bet that the Edmunds parking structure was probably designed for vehicles no larger than a Pious in mind.

bimmerjay says:

10:57 PM, 08/11/10

Judging by the fact that Edmunds collectively puts over 400,000 miles per year on their vehicles by some dozen plus editors, scrapes are bound to happen. However stupid they may be.

"This is surprising a Volvo hit something and the airbags didn't start going off."

Why would they? The systems are designed to deploy in collisions of sufficient force to need a supplemental restraint. They're not so stupidly designed as to deploy just because the vehicle hits something.

apez says:

10:59 PM, 08/11/10

Er, someone contact the CDC about that keyboard.

eclogite says:

04:58 AM, 08/12/10

Urgh...that sucks.

And speaking of missing vehicles from the LTRTB, where's the Traverse?

weezedog says:

06:36 AM, 08/12/10

That'll buff right out.....

wobbly_ears says:

07:24 AM, 08/12/10

That is ugly. Are you sure that all editors at Edmunds know how to drive?

Mike, why not out the name of the perpetrator? If not, we'll all be speculation as to who it it is.

I'm taking my guess here & putting on my Sherlock Holmes hat; The note is trying to be too cute (which many gals do when in a pickle) and handwriting looks like a girl's. So, it is one of the women on the staff.

Elementary, my dear Watson!

cello_one says:

07:44 AM, 08/12/10

Why, Oh why, couldn't it have been the Prius?

bimmerjay says:

07:44 AM, 08/12/10

"And speaking of missing vehicles from the LTRTB, where's the Traverse?"

They've explained this before - it's probably being used for production support and not being driven much by the editorial staff, hence the lack of blog posts.

mikeschmidt says:

07:58 AM, 08/12/10

Speculate as you'd like, my lips are sealed. But I'm not against offering hints.

sodaguy: the culprit was indeed banished from Santa Monica office following this incident.

wobbly_ears: your deductive reasoning skills are unmatched.

lostboyz says:

08:15 AM, 08/12/10

I can't even picture how this happened, can we at least get that much?

makakio says:

09:03 AM, 08/12/10

Employees at Edmunds don't get fired for doing this - unless they were drunk or otherwise super-negligent. They should just lose fleet privileges.

I'm with just about everyone else here though - explanation needed as to how someone could do this much damage to the *driver's side A-pillar area*. That's got to be the *least* likely spot on your car to wreck into a stationary object, right?!

banhugh says:

10:48 AM, 08/12/10

Who's Er?

wobbly_ears says:

11:16 AM, 08/12/10

Mike,

We don't need no names, but can we get the story on HOW it happened? I find it really hard to see how the driver's side got scratched. I would have understood if it was on the other side.

You have some 'splainin to do!

felonious says:

11:28 AM, 08/12/10

I don't see any of the female names I recognize being gone. Was this person a fairly new hire?

breadwagon says:

12:44 PM, 08/12/10

I understand scraping the rear overhang of a pickup truck (the Ram), but how does THIS happen? He had to be speeding in there or something. It's right by the driver, the area you have the MOST visibility!

We want NAMES!

But if you cant, what happened? If it has something to do with wierd blind spots, that's something to comment about, isn't it?

breadwagon says:

12:52 PM, 08/12/10

Well, they haven't changed the list of editors (http://www.insideline.com/about/) since the last google cached date (Aug 7, 2010 21:03:23 GMT) so the person either was let go before then, was never on the page, or they forgot to edit it :P

neimad says:

02:11 PM, 08/12/10

Carroll Lachnit; want prize if right.

sniperruff says:

02:48 PM, 08/12/10

Eh sh*t happens. As someone mentioned, Inside Line collectively drive so many miles annually something is bound to happen.

I'd guess this is from coming out of a spot as well.

jederino says:

10:05 AM, 08/13/10

I drive an assortment of fleet vehicles that are parked in an underground garage with large pillars. Cars are frequently parked very close to a pillar. If you get the keys in a situation like this, you just have to be mindful. Use your mirrors, position them correctly, and move slowly while scanning all 4 corners and mirros. Take it slow, too, because backup accidents account for a lot of pedestrian injuries. Hurting someone would be awful, so I always take my time.

c_lachnit says:

12:56 PM, 08/13/10

@neimad: sorry--no prize for you. I'm not Idiot. Nor Idiotrix.

sodaguy says:

03:09 PM, 08/17/10

@zcalvert:

I haven't posts from Laura Burstein, Josh Sadlier, Brian Moody or Doug Lloyd in quite some time. I would have to guess that the person responsible for the Volvo's damage is one of those four individuals.
