2010 Ford F-150 SVT Raptor: Track Tested

Break-in's done. The 411-horsepower 6.2-liter V8 was ready, so we took our long-term Ford F-150 SVT Raptor to the track.

We know this thing's made for the desert and other off-road escapades, but how is it when faced with pavement?

Acceleration Comments: Wheelspin is the enemy, hence quicker run with trac on. Didn't try a launch in 4WD. (The 4WD system here isn't made for on-road use and doesn't have a center-differential. The owner's manual says that it's not made for on-road use, though it may produce a faster time, it's against our protocol.)

Braking Comments: Lots of dive but always true. No sense in going beyond 2nd stop (that was 9 feet longer than the 1st!)

 (Note * We didn't redo the skidpad and slalom tests this time around. Our reasoning is simple: When a vehicle weighs over 6,000 pounds, as the F-150 SVT Raptor 6.2 does, there's not a heckuva lot to be learned from these handling tests. We reasoned that the 6.2 Raptor would not improve significantly on the 0.70g skidpad and 55.5-mph slalom numbers recorded in our 5.4 Raptor test vehicle. Moreover, repeating the exercise would have trashed another set of the Raptor's expensive BF Goodrich off-road tires, and given the anticipated negligible difference in the numbers, this collateral damage didn't seem justified. -- IL Track Tested 6.2 Raptor)

What a beast. Pretty quick too ! If I lived somewhere that I could actually use this thing and justify owning it, then the Raptor would be my daily driver. I may have to move.

Sounds great and it still was accelerating as it got close to 100 mph. I wonder what is the top speed both limited and unlimited?

I agree it sounds awesome and I love a revvy V8, but it's difficult to ascertain where it's really shifting because that tach is woefully unable to keep up.

^ Used to own a 6-cylinder '86 F-150 work truck. It had a regular cab, an 8' bed, 4x4, and a manual transmission. The label on the driver's door jamb stated that it had a payload rating of 2,200 pounds and that the GVW was 6200 pounds. That means the vehicle weighed 4000 pounds. That's my kind of truck.

Surprisingly weak numbers. I guess when you weigh a whopping 6000lbs no matter how wasteful you are you still can't step it with most V6 family sedans...

its not about going 0-60 chicagotex and it is fast for a truck of that weight. It is all about keeping speed over rough terrain i.e. a consistant 100mph rather than getting up to 80 slowing down to 50 going up to 110 and going back down to 70. this will blow the doors off of most vehicles off road except for some highly modified dune buggies and heavily modified trucks.

I agree with windsor on this one. Huge wheels and off-road specific tires alone will hurt the numbers (granted these work pretty well on the tarmac as well!). This truck may handle OK in traffic but it's goal in life is to cruise across horrible terrain at high speed. If you want to run numbers like a new V6 Mustang / M3 / Toyota Prius / MS3 / old Miata - go ahead and buy one.

How about a comparison with an early 90s SVT? One pass on the Track, and one test through Baja?

Man, that would be so cool if Edmunds staff would go 100 mph over "rough terrain" in this. I would so love to see this truck destroyed that way. You know, by showing what it really is -- a pretender toy. Unless by "rough terrain" you really mean well graded and maintained dirt roads.

In order to go "a consistent 100 mph" over rough terrain, you need a purpose built spaceframe chassis or a T4 class truck, something like a KAMAZ 4911.
