This morning this struck me as odd. Our long-term 2002 Corvette Z06 is a Chevy after all, and Chevys are for the everyman. They are today and they were way back in 2002 when our Corvette was showroom new. Trunk Ajar? Am I the only one that thinks "Trunk Open" would have been more appropriate.

My old Envoy had this. It was funny because my niece asked what the beeping was one time I was driving, and it said "Door Ajar". She laughed and said "it's a door, not a jar".
Keep in mind she was like 3 at the time.

They mean different things.
ajar: neither entirely open nor entirely shut; partly open
Chevy assumes you can tell if the trunk is all the way open without the message, but you probably can't tell if you're driving along with the trunk more or less shut, but not latched, when the message will most likely appear/need to be seen.

The programming was outsourced to Bangladesh, where "ajar" is the literal translation for whatever they originally used.
Well, maybe not....but this sounds better than the above post.

+1 omgtdibbq
if it said "Open" some brain donor would be in court saying "It said it was open but I could see it wasn't so I didn't stop and the next thing I knew fluf-ems (annoyingly small dog) fell out.

Fords say "door ajar" too...and if I'm not mistaken, my Jaguar does too o.O. Not very often I half-a*# close stuff.

Must come out of the same lexicon as "gages."

My dad's 1984 Chrysler LeBaron convertible has a talking computer that tells you doors are ajar

Annoyingly, my Solstice GXP has that same script in the gauge, despite being 5 years newer than your Corvette.

Hmm, I can definitely put this in my file under "who cares?"
Anyway, what's interesting to me is on the speedometer and it has MPH and Km/h with only one set of speeds. Assuming you can just toggle it? Does JRiz switch it to Km/h?

I would think that maybe it has to do with the fact that in that digital dot matrix script 0 (number) and O (letter) look the same. So maybe there is a standing order for 0 to always be a number and to not use the letter O whenever possible.

Don't know if you're the only one, but it seems you're in the minority.
Ajar, open, unlatched, not fully secured-phrase it as you prefer; the point is that the vehicle is telling you that something needs immediate attention. Besides; what if none of the IL drivers realized till long after the fact that the trunk wasn't fully closed? I'd be willing to be that someone would make a post asking why a $50k sports car doesn't have a simple trunk warning of any kind.... ;-)

Yep, I agree, someone would have complained if the trunk was closed but not fully latched, and the warning said "trunk open"....
slickersdrip: There is a button where you can toggle back and forth from metric to US Standard measurements. It's pretty cool, it changes everything. Fahrenheit to Celsius, MPH to KPH, even MPG to Liters/100km. Anyway, the numbers don't change, just the unit of measure does. So say you're going 60 mph and you hit the button to switch to metric... the speedo needle sweeps up to 100 (now KPH). Hopefully I explained that well enough.
Anyway, you'll see a lot of videos on youtube of people saying they're doing200 mph in their Z06s, or going 0-60 in 2.5 seconds, but if you look closely, they're in kph.

It is correct English, and there's nothing wrong with using the term "ajar" for this purpose. It is actually more correct than "open" as it could mean the trunk lid isn't latched, and is partially open, even though visually it looks closed.
Ford uses the same terminology. My 1983 Thunderbird Turbo Coupe had "Door Ajar" and "Trunk Ajar" indicator lights.
But really, who gives a crap anyway? Out of all the things a Z06 can do, you guys try to pick on proper English used inside the car? Are you serious? Will you guys please take this car to a HPDE track day and report your findings before the year comes up?
c5z06er says:

Seriously. Did you guys get new tires on this thing? If so, get it track-tested again and post about that!
Please stop and realize that these kinds of posts do nothing to help a person decide whether or not to buy this car. And isn't that what this site is about? I don't think anyone would be swayed to buy a car or not based on the messages that come up telling you that your trunk isn't closed.

I remember my Uncles 1986 Chrysler Lebaron that talked said "Door Ajar", so it's been around for quite a long time and is nothing new.

c5z06er,
Thanks for enlightening me on that. Very nifty little feature! I like that a lot more than the extra set of numbers for Km/h. Definitely makes sense that people would put up videos making it look like they're going faster than they are. I'll look for that in the future.

Whens a door not a door, when its ajar
Whens a car not a car, when it turns into a parking lot.

Seeing who here doesn't know the significance of the difference between "open" and "ajar" explains a lot. Suddenly so many things seem so very clear to me.

Not to call you out or start a pissing match; but could you explain what it is exactly that you're referring to?
