Driving to work this morning, I was minding my own business. Then I noticed a car driving right next to me. I mean the same speed right next to me. I hate that.
So, I looked to my right as if to say WTF and I noticed that he was not even looking. He was texting and starting to drift into my lane. If I could give tickets, you know like a citizen's arrest, I would have pulled him over, fined him heavily, smacked him upside the head and tossed his phone into a nearby sewer.
I mean what the hell. Is your text message worth hitting someone? What if you ran into a telephone pole? Would you lol?
Fortunately, I was driving the quick-reacting Volvo XC60. I punched it instead of him and was able to leave him behind. This woke him up. I don't know how long his attention span lasted after that but at least he wasn't driving next to me anymore.

Amen sister. Our commute is about 22 miles each way in S. CA and I'm not exaggerating when I say that we see three to four close calls every week that are in some way, shape or form tied to an idiot who is either on the cell phone or texting.

Yeah, I really hate that. I don't like texters behind me either. I'll bet half of the rear end collisions these days are from texting.

I upgraded the horns to Hella Supertones on my car partially for this reason - to use them with due diligence when people need that wake up call (the stock ones were embarrassing as well).
I wish I could report those people too. FYI, the fine isn't $25 anymore. It's $148 (with court/administrative fees) here for the first offense, $256 for each subsequent in California and clearly it's not enough nor being enforced enough.

I hear you Donna. I have a long commute (120 miles round trip) and constantly see people texting on their phones. I turn off my phone during my commute. I am not that important that I can't be out of touch for 2.5 hours per day. People, is answering that tweet worth killing someone?

About half of the drivers i observed driving home from work today were on their phones, yapping away, often drifting over then quickly correcting. A few were looking down either texting or dialing. I can't say enough how much I hate when people aren't paying attention to driving. I admit to talking on the phone sometimes, but I'm fortunate enough to have hands free bluetooth so it's more like talking to a passenger. The last line of the post should be made into a bumper sticker.

This is why I don't use the term "accident". Most of the time these are not mishaps but rather idiot-induced collisions, at least here in L.A. where cell phone-addicted zombies constantly ignore stop signs, red lights and turn signal use. If insurance companies gave out good points for avoiding collisions, they'd be owing me money.

I just got an android phone a few days ago. I'm really excited that it supports Sync's text messaging functions! It can read incoming text messages and reply with canned responses. You can listen to messages totally via voice commands, but I haven't figured out how to reply via voice. Still, very very cool.

A first gen Nissan Murano was swirving and braking late in front of me last night, I hit the horn a few times and the driver responded with a bird out the window in kind. At the next light I got in the left lane and saw the driver: A woman who had that "Paris Hilton" look, was texting and looked up at me and smiled.
I wanted to get out of the car and rip her head off. Idots is right, there would be nothing accidental about her hitting a tree of another motorist.

As of Febuary 1st 2010 you could be dinged up to $500 in Ontario for for yapping or texting while driving.

LOL why weren't you keeping your eyes on the road, isnt that why your so mad at the texter? I dont remember that one from Driver Ed, "Now students, if a driver next to you is doing something you don't like, you should take your eyes off the road and look at that driver as if to say WTF." What if you hit the car in front of you while you were looking to the right as if to say WTF, would you LOL?

the other day I was behind and to the right of a cop as we came up to red light. He slowed down way before the light and stopped a good car length and a half behind the car in front of him. My first thought was that for some reason he was going to come after me after I got in front of him.
As I got closer I could finally see that his right hand was out to the side where he was looking holding his cell phone as his thumb danced around on the keypad. TEXTING! He pulled away from the light late and continued to text as he went. I want to mount a camera on the rearview mirror that I can hit a button and record chunks of video. That way I don't have to join the ranks of the idiots to record their stupidity.
I rarely go a day without seeing some driver playing road pong (bouncing between the lines) as they text away or do lord knows what on their phones. I was behind one guy for over 10 minutes and he had his phone down just about at the level of the bottom of his steering wheel the entire time, spending more time looking at it and very little time looking at the road.

This is why I drive a truck with a lift kit. I'm big enough that if someone does hit me I have the mass 90% of the time to not be run over or pushed easily into another lane or worse another person.

You should have just rammed into him and drive him straight to the ditch. That would have been what a responsible citizen would have done. Shame on you.
If I snatched the phone from an ass and shove it straight up every time something like this happens, a lot of proctologists would be drinking champagne on giant yachts with chicks from rap music videos.

Seems people do not learn. Similar situation happened in Chatsworth (in Southern California) but it was on railroad tracks. The lead engineer was texting while piloting a passenger train. I won't go into the details ... but it has a tragic ending.

As if drunk drivers weren't useless and detrimental to society enough, now I have to worry about a FAR HIGHER number of texting drivers. People need to focus on driving. Not texting in the car. Not looking away from the road and chatting it up. Not eating and drinking to the point where driving a car is a second thought. There are many people who need to get back to driving basics.

there are cities around here that have taken it upon themselves to ban any form of distracted driving. This includes talking on a cellphone (handsfree acceptable), texting, eating, putting on makeup, playing with your kids in the backseat, etc. It might give way to police pulling people over for no reason, but after almost getting hit every single day driving to work (almost always by someone on a cellphone) I fully support it.
The worst part about these people is they usually don't even realize the accidents they almost caused so they just continue to text or talk and drive.

In Boston there was an accident on the Green Line about a year or so ago where a 20-something guy driving the train was texting his girlfriend and rear-ended another train; 50ish people were injured. Thankfully the "T" was smart enough to fire them.
I think this only shows how humans are no different than animals who get distracted by shiny things- only difference is that we have more advanced shiny things.

So sad. It hurts to listen to all of you talking about how many people text because its all so true and dangerous. Its hard to understand why people text while driving, why not just do that face to face at starbucks?

Sounds like a lot of complaining to me. I realize some people have the mental capacity of a fly and can't manage two things at once, but it sure seems to me that everyone who's been complaining in this thread managed just fine.
I realize distracted driving isn't safe, but its a fact of life. You'd think reading this thread that every person besides these commenters was blindfolded driving down the middle of the road talking on two phones or something.
The fact of the matter is cell phone drivers are annoying, because they tend to wander in the lane and drive slow, but its not the end of the world. I guarantee you that the number of undistracted drivers that cause accidents is higher than people eating/talking/texting on cell phones.
I'd rather see more strict driving tests and regular enforcement of them. If we got people who can't drive cell phone or no off the roads, then I could see people whining about distracted driving, but until you get the people who are bad drivers all the time off the road, leave those of us who manage not to kill people by the dozens when we answer a call while driving alone. Thanks.

Because some people are ugly and you do not want to talk to them face to face at an area Starbucks.
