2010 Mitsubishi Outlander GT: STOP THAT

Tell me what's wrong-- besides the shaking and reflection from the big plastic dash-- with this video of our 2010 Mitsubishi Outlander GT?

Jump for the answer.

Figure it out? Note the beeping. Note that the seatbelt is not connected. Note that the CAR IS IN PARK!

More and more vehicles are doing this and the Outlander GT is the latest, and the latest long-termer, to get on my nerves. If the car is in P or if the parking brake is fully set, it's okay if I'm not wearing a seatbelt. I promise. It'll be fine.

Similar to us wanting a smart sensor to tell the nav systems that yes, a passenger is present and can work the navigation system without crashing the car, the infernal beeping of the seatbelt alarm should shut off when the vehicle is stationary and NOT IN A DRIVE GEAR!!

What's next? An omnipresent alarm letting occupants know that they're in a vehicle which may move eventually and which may be dangerous if it's not already dangerous while parked?

Seatbelts = good. This stupid thing = bad.

Oh how I understand the madness. Same thing with most, if not all newer Audi's. Drives me INSANE. Want to eat lunch in your car with the AC on? Prepare to go crazy if you want to do so without your seatbelt on...

Things like this are usually pretty easy to disconnect. You guys are all very averse to DIY on these cars though ala skipshift.

Mike, the government knows what's best for you. They are only trying to help you be safer. This is is the new America where we can't expect drivers to know they are not buckled up without some sort of warning. I guess we should be lucky we can still start cars without fastening the seat belt first.

oh our legacy does that... drives me nuts. it does it if the ignition is in the on position at all and chimes for about 10 seconds every 30 seconds until a seatbelt is fastened, even if the ebrake is on.

I hate this too.

The normal procedure is to put the key in the ignition and turn it on, then put on your seatbelt – simply because it gets the key out of your hands before you buckle up. So you get chimed at under normal circumstances, which is not when any chime should be going off!

Hmm. Every car I've been in the past, oh I don't know, decade or longer does that if you start the engine before belting in.

Could be worse. We could go back to the motorized belts from the early 90s.

I agree it's an annoyance, but it's not much of one and is hardly unique to the Outlander.

fushigi,

Guess the video could have been more clear: This continues, in park, endlessly. Not for 30 seconds. Not for a minute. Forever. Grumble.

I think it's fine to comment on these types of things, keep it up. That's the purpose here I think: to find the "little things" you don't find out until you've already bought it.

Why would you want to sit there, with the motor running, for any length of time, IN PARK?

Shut the motor off if you are not going anywhere.

Problem solved.

Firstwagon: non-running engine = non-functional air conditioning. Sometimes you need to wait in the car while hitting the drive up at the bank (less and less today of course) or in line at the drive through, or waiting for a spouse who needs to run into the drug store to pick up a 'scrip, or waiting for your child in the school pick up line or...

So there are plenty of reasons that you might need to sit in the hot sun in your car and not want to turn off the engine.

Well it seems to stop in the video, so I guess you mean it goes in cycles, but endlessly. My Sonata does that, too. I complained to Hyundai and to Power's. Guess it worked. They changed it not to do it endlessly for the next year.

But I agree, the best systems are those that go endless once it's out of Park, but not until then.

"bankerdanny "

If you just are sitting in a lineup, why did you bother to take your seatbelt off?

Sorry I don't see plenty of reasons.

firstwagon,

I've had many quick lunches in my car when work is busy. If you were sitting in the parking lot of a fast food joint eating a quick burger in your car with the engine on, radio on, and AC on, why would you keep your seat belt on?

makakio says:

+1. My e46 utters one beep about ten seconds into driving if you're not wearing your belt and then the audibles go away. I may not be the smartest guy around, but that works for me.

The chime in our Taurus wagon is starting to go out, and only comes on occasionally when the key is left in and the door is opened. I've never been so happy to have something break in our car.

It drives me insane too. My friend's Lancer GTS does that too. But that's not a Mitsubishi thing, a lot of new cars now have that same chime warning system.
