1994 Mazda MX-5 Miata: Sticky Hands

miatasteeringwheeldetail.jpg

You read right, our 1994 Mazda MX-5 Miata makes my hands sticky. As is apt to happen with older cars, i.e. "crapwagons," the rubber on the steering wheel has worn off so the stickier lower dermis is exposed and every time I grab hold my palms stick to the wheel. Unfortunate considering the GT-R-beating grip of this car. Do I really have to hold onnn? I want to wash my hands every time I drive the car.

So I went online looking for a nice steering wheel cover for our car. What do you guys think of this rilly cute one? Actually this one is probably better, huh?

Ahh the steering wheel in my '00 Dakota hs this problem. Only in the top corner though, so I just avoid touching that section of wheel. The previous owner (aka my dad) was a repeat offender of palming the wheel in that particular spot. Also, I've noticed that it is significantly more irritating when the car has been in direct sunlight and the steering wheel is hot. Yuck.

Yeah, Wheelskins is the best.

I'd say get the second one for the Miata and the first one for the Sonata, considering someone had a Hello Kitty water bottle in one of the shots. [sarcasm]It would be sooooo cute, meeeow.[/sarcasm]

Until you get a new wheel you could go with a Pep boys special. Unless of course you like sticky hands.

The Miata steering wheel was not made of rubber!! That is a leather wrapped wheel (or whatever is left of it)...

I'm starting to sense some Miata fatigue ... sure, when the rest of the fleet is new, the 16 year old 170+k miles "crappy" miata does look like a pice of it!!

When are the promised mods coming (engine, seats, roll bars, etc)??? Just trow in a Momo wheel with the other upgrades and be done with it!

Duct tape.

One of the few downsides to airbags, inability to easily replace the steering wheel. Years ago I gave my dad a beautiful wood wheel for his 1969 MGB.

+1 for MOMO wheel, I have the 'competition' on my NA and it feels great.

If you need to keep the Airbag this is a good option ($200):

=Þ @ Mrs. Edmunds' suggestion!

How about Alpinestars driving gloves for everyone in the Editorial department?

Its a long shot but its by far the most comfortable steering wheel cover money can buy.

Moss Motors sell two beautiful wood steering wheels. Both retain the use of the airbag. This is a project a gearhead can accomplish. Just remember an airbag is a small bomb so treat it with respect.
