That's quite a wide range of mpg for the Ford Edge, but overall pretty bad if it's as low as a real truck.

Over the past 33 months and 56,000 miles of ownership my 2007 MS3 has averaged 23.5 mpg. The worst street mileage was 18.5 mpg and the best street mileage was 27.0 mpg. Track mileage averaged 10.7 mpg. As I mentioned in another thread, if I keep the sled under 80 and refuse to participate in any "illegal speed contests" it will average 25 mpg. My usual driving mix is just about 75% suburban and 25% rural.

What is up with the Edge? Is it that boring that nobody has anything to say about it? And how the devil did it get 9.6 mpg? Idling for like 5 hours and then a 10 minute drive?

Hyundai Genesis is already out of the LT fleet???

Not even a last Good-bye post????

10.7 mpg on the track is pretty good, roadburner! I only get 6 mpg on the track in my WRX! =Þ

9.6 for the Edge's worst? That's horrible. Our old Durango with a Hemi could do better than that, body on frame and 300+ HP and living in a hilly area. Did you drive it up a steep hill for 300 miles straight, in 1st gear?!?

roadburner says:

07:21 PM, 04/ 1/10

My Club Sport gets 16.5 mpg on the track, but I'd trade the 10 mpg for another 100 bhp...

Did some research and realized that last time the edge was on a fuel economy list it averaged closer to 20 mpg. Have you guys kept it loaded and turned overdrive off or something?

tenta20 says:

Um....where is the Fusion Hybrid? Is it out of service or something? It's been like a week and a half without hearing anything new about it. And, where the fuel economy for anything from BMW????

hybris says:

+1 tenta20

Did you guys o a track day with the Edge? Did you wreck it and that's why we haven't heard anything about it in almost a year?

texases says:

You guys BEAT your cars. Our MKX (Edge equivalent) gets 15 around town, 22 highway. 9.6? Amazing!

Are you sure you guys are driving the Vette correctly

lmbvette says:

I'm a bit surprised that the Audi S5 gets worse mileage than the Camaro SS. Shocked actually!

HUH??? Try 17.3 as an average.......and why put the Edge in when you cant do simple math and you either dont have the Edge anymore or you are not allowed to blog about it....it has been years since you had an entry about it....why not just come clean about it? why all the mystery?

bodyblue says:

OMG! Really? The average is based on the log they are keeping...not the average of the highest and lowest single tank experienced! Maybe...just maybe the average is 14.0mpg...which, by the way is abysmal! My '08 Armada has a better lifetime average than that. Another reason we ended up avoiding such mid-sized utes when we bought it.

bodyblue says:

"The average is based on the log they are keeping...not the average of the highest and lowest single tank experienced"

Again....HUH????? I guess I see your point but it seems pretty low for a car they really are not testing anymore....I mean if they really still have it, lets see a pic of it with a newspaper with todays date like a hostage! :)

@subytrojan,

Thanks for that Suby!

Donna,
You omitted the Audi A4 Avant from the first list and the Honda Insight from the second list.

bankerdanny says:

Keep in mind when the produce this list it doesn't always include all cars.

I was shocked to even see the Edge on the list, then shocked again by the poor average. Since you do apparently still have it, how about you shut up me and the others who have been complaining about a lack of updates for the past year and tell us what you've been doing with it and how it is holding up. You know, like its a part of your long-term test fleet or something.

v8vroom says:

My theory on the Edge:

It's a part of some super secret collaboration with Ford to see how it performs with a v-8, swapped in place of the v-6.

Prove me wrong!

jederino says:

My G35 gets pretty dismal fuel economy on my short commutes, averaging just 19.5 mpg overall for a year of 10,500 miles. However, on a single tank for a track weekend that was 77 miles away, it averaged 16.9! If I look at it that way, it's efficient compared to the higher performance. I calculate that I pay a $300 yearly for extra gas per year over a puffed Kizashi or a GTi - a small premium for a rip-snorting V6 in an accomodating car.

Donna,

Did I miss the Mini-E in this chart?

@lmbvette: The midsize V8 coupes all seem to be pretty close, so little surprise there. I'd be surprised if there was very much variation. What is surprising is the Vette being in the same range. I figured its remarkably low weight and superior aerodynamics would give it a considerable advantage. I guess 8 years of technology counts for a lot.

@texases: while I too would like to know what caused the Edge's poor mileage, I think it is understandable that they do drive their cars, shall we say, enthusiastically, as well they should when writing for an enthusiast site. In addition to that, the editors are driving into Santa Monica, so they are probably encountering some of the worst traffic conditions in the nation.

@bodyblue: I'll try explaining this too. The edge has probably dozens of tanks recorded as data points. The high and low tanks are only two out of those dozens of data points. The average of the full data set will not be the same as the average of max and min if the data set doesn't represent a perfect bell curve. If that still doesn't make sense, any high school or college level statistics course can clear things up.

where is the mpg of the Honda Insight? Why is there a tag for it in the categories in the end of the article if you don't post anything about it?
