After all these months, I still can't believe the 2009 Audi S5 looks like this (beautiful, refined, understated, clean...) yet sounds like a muscle car. I lightly blipped the throttle during a downshift on the way to work, and the exhaust note was every bit as deep and yummy as if I'd done it in our Camaro or Challenger.
For those who can spend $60 grand (and I know that's no small sum), is there a better sleeper performance car out there right now?

I don't know if the 335is or 135i would count (since the former has M Sport styling packages included), but might be considered sleepers compared to the M3 or Z4is. The all-black 1999 Taurus SHO that I had would qualify, but that's 11 years ago.
I'm in the process of ordering a 2011 S5 for the reasons Erin listed: it's gorgeous (which I know is in the eye of the beholder), relatively understated (LED daytime running lights aren't exactly understated), and is ergonomically correct for me. From inside the cabin, the sound of the engine and exhaust is fairly muted, but still there and tugs at my strings.
The $62K price tag is a bit high, but I'm willing to pay a bit more for the styling than an equivalent S4 (which I would consider a sleeper as well, not to mention a bit more reasonable in cost).

Mustang isn't really a "sleeper," but I think the E-class coupe could count as a sleeper. The performance is kinda down low though..... I guess the S5 is the best sleeper performance.

i don't know if its a sleeper, but for 60k i'll take a M3. what do the editors think of the Long-Term M3 vs the S5?

How is a 60k Audi with a V8 a sleeper? And considering its performance isn't all that for the price tag I'm confused by the inference that it's a good deal.
Seems like it's a major rip off for the cash. M3, Cayman, 335i, 135, etc are all available for less, offer more and are built/backed by real warranties.

I wouldn't define a "sleeper" as a big red $60,000 coupe that has LED DRLs, all of which just attract attention. Sleepers are typically very subtle cars that most wouldn't expect to be fast.

I think you're right. I was a little unsure about the Audi *5 platform when I first saw it, but I love it now. I find the car very attractive, and I like how understated the look is considering the power under the hood. The S5 is probably out of my price and desired fuel consumption range, but once we get that new and improved turbo 4, I think the A5 will be high on my next car list.
I agree that the S4 or 335i (sedan, particularly) would be even more of a sleeper, but those are also in a slightly different segment.
The 135i is an interesting point, as well, since I have found that people who know enough to know that the 335i has a twin-turbo engine don't necessarily know you can get the same engine in the 1 series. If the 135i had more universally acceptable styling (read: my wife can't stand it, and that's a deal breaker), I would be ordering a 2011 with the DCT right now.

I think my Cosmic Blue MS3 qualifies as a sleeper. It's not a top-tier performance car, but almost no one expects a dowdy five door hatch to be packing 287 hp- as more than a few mullet-heads and ricers have discovered.
zcalvert says:

I'd agree with other posters that the 335 and 135 are much bigger sleepers. I suspect most people (including many people who own them as status symbols) have no idea how fast those cars are.

The Saab Turbo X is a definite sleeper, but I'm not sure if they still make it. That thing has a ridiculous midrange punch.

I can't believe I'm the first one to mention the CTS-V. Unless you're really looking for it, it looks a lot like a regular CTS. It's my ultimate sleeper car. (Well, that and a Monster Miata.)

Considering only new cars, I think the 2010 WRX wagon/hatch is more of a sleeper than the S5. Pull up next to it at a light and you'd probably think cheap econobox wagon, but it'll rip to 60mph in under 5 seconds. I'm sure most if not all car-enthusiasts would be more surprised at the WRX than the S5 coupe.

The Cadillac CTS-V is so *not* a sleeper. That mesh grille screams bling, y0!
Standard CTS grille > CTS-V grille imo.
I agree about the MY2009-2010 WRX hatchback. The fender flares coming to the MY2011 'Rex will make it more conspicuous.

Boys, let us not forget about the new Taurus SHO. Also, the Flex with the Ecoboost engine, although not a speed demon, will surely surprise many when the light turns green.

Yeah, how come this is audi coupe with big shiny wheels quad exhausts S5 badges all over and V8 sound is a "sleeper"? LOL, come on, you can do better than that.
Nahh, a sleeper is a 135i or a 335i sedan. Just look at a 335i without the sport package, now thats a real sleeper!
A mustang 5.0 a sleeper? LOL Im sorry, had to laugh

+1, the CTS-V is no sleeper. It may have 4-doors but it also shouts "look at me!"

A 2010-11 F150 Regular Cab Short Bed 4x4 with either the old 3v 5.4 or new 6.2 (if it becomes available for the lower trims) and limited slip would be a sleeper truck for sure.

What about the Benz E63 Wagon? Minus a few AMG badges, it basically looks like a garden variety wagon with big wheels. Yet it'll keep up with an Audi R8.

@subytrojan,
Totally agree with you about the CTS grille. I do not care for the squared off bumpers on the V model either. In fact, pretty much the whole front fascia looks is better looking on the regular CTS in my opinion.

The CTS-V is absolutely a sleeper.
The average person on the street has no clue that my car has 556 hp under the hood. Only one or two people have realized what it was.
The rest just think "it's an old person's car."
I just say..."Yep...I guess 34 is old now.... and I can live with that." ;-)

well idk about brand new cars being sleepers, but my friend always call my 300zx twin turbo a sleeper. it totally surprised a 40 something year old in his 09 CTS-V when beat him from a roll hahah.
new car sleeper? i'd have to say Audi S4. a nice set of bolt on's do it's fatass good. intake, headers, race pipes, catback, ecu tune, intercooler, throttle body. should wake it up quite nicely.
DLu says:

+1 on CTS-V being a $60k sleeper, esp lmbvette that, "The rest just think "it's an old person's car." With its speed, 99% of the cars may never see its grille ... :) Enthusiasts will always notice the details, but then nothing is a sleeper unless you mod it yourself.
+1 also with jeepsrt (although isn't it more of the $40-50k range sleeper?). I really don't think most people know that there's an SRT8 Jeep out there; especially with SUV's being popular with cosmetic upgrades, people surely will think it's just a Grand Cherokee on big rims. Nobody will suspect it can blow the doors off most Cayennes on the street and prob still beat the more rare Turbo.

The CTS-V is definitely a sleeper. Most people have no idea how much hp my 2010 CTS-V has, and they can't believe it's a stick shift Cadillac. Only car enthusiasts know and recognize the car. Yeah, the front grille and bulging hood is a little blingy, but again, most people don't know what it is or what it's got. And from the back and sides, you almost can't even tell it from a regular CTS. That makes it a sleeper.
It's a lot of fun, seeing who recognizes it and who doesn't.
This past weekend, while I was in the front row of an intersection with a red light, this Asian guy with his girlfriend, both in their early 20's, were walking across the street, and the guy kept looking at the front of my car, and especially the wheels (I think he was looking at the large brake calipers). He was looking at it curiously, like he sort of knew this wasn't a regular CTS, but he didn't know exactly what it was either. As he looked back, he yelled to me "Nice car man!" I said "thanks!", and he replied "that has a V-8 right?" I smiled, and said "yep". He nodded in appreciation and said "that's the one".

the hyundai genesis sedan with the 4.6L v8 makes 385hp, and gets to 60
in 5.5 seconds. a car you wouldn't expect to be that fast, a great sleeper sedan for $40k.
also, my wife wanted to trade in her suv for a crossover, so we recently test drove a
volvo xc60 t6. twin turbo power with surprising acceleration for a volvo of all cars.
now that's what i call a sleeper!
