Donna, I agree that the plaid is matter of preference thing. Having said that, I have a MKV GTI with plaid seats, I love em. Everytime someone gets into my car for the first time, they always comment on how cool they think the plaid looks.

i have to admit i thought of the same exact thing when i saw the original post but didn't comment for fear of being labeled a perv. but you opened the door, so, i'll say that i like the association.
having said that, whoever designed the uniform in that pic should have their knuckles rapped with a ruler by the meanest nun one can find.

Ha!
I agree, very polarizing. I love mine but can certainly understand how others might vehemently hate them.

I love the plaid, it's different.
brn says:

The plaid doesn't bother me. In fact, I'd prefer it to not having it there. The trim stitching, on the other hand, not so much.
On an unrelated note, that catholic school girl looks pregnant.

I like it a lot.

Not the first thing I thought of but I can see the connection.
BTW When the GTI's seats where first posted who else thought of Spaceball's "They've gone to plaid!"?
sgude says:

Just love the GTI plaid. It was in my first one, but leather precluded it in my second. I'm still debating it for my third.

I like the allusion to the first GTIs sold here in the '80s, but the MkV version was a bit bright and shiny for me. I like this version, more subdued and subtle tones but livelier than the entirely black fabrics of the MkIV

The plaid looks good in pictures but not when you are actually sitting in it.
old_volvo says:

I like the plaid. Hell I think they should throw in an argyle option. Just so it can match my dorky socks.
Then again, I'm a guy, I like short plaid skirts (on girls) and argyle sweater vests (on me).
Maybe the GTI *is* right for me?
e36_guy says:

Argyle, glen plaid, houndstooth would all be cool options. It's the red stitching that I find to be a bit much on the MkVI.

If the GTI with plaid is the equivalent of Taylor Momsen, sign me up. That girl really makes me feel like a dirty, dirty old man. Read. Pederast

I also went to Catholic schools and I don't remember the girls wearing uniforms with skirts that short or shirts with a low cut neck line. Anyway, she is right, the plaid is out of place in a car interior.

If THAT'S what you looked like in uniform, then you can just quit complaining right now.
As for the seats: The pattern is different -- as in, not something you see in other cars -- but not garish. I guess that puts it in the "like" column for me.

The pattern is different and unlike any other car out there. I think that is a good thing; I might have a different opinion if I went to an all girls catholic school though.

Every Catholic school kid from my town ended up doing a lot of drugs and/or people. Made the ragged public school kids looks like altar boys. Some chick I reconnected with a couple years ago had to have some kind of nasal surgery because she did a line while she had an open sore in her nostril

Nothing beats leather seating. I can't wait to look back on this era of car companies designing blatant nostalgic bull-kaka into their cars. This coming from 09' Mini owner; blah.
wrinklebump says:

I don't know how someone who willingly departs with 350 bones a month for an orgy of nostalgia could make that comment

This picture would have been great for one of the caption contests.
I ordered a GTI which should arrive any day now. My last umteen cars had leather, my preference; however, the black leather in the GTI seemed too bland to me, especially in a black car. So, I ordered the plaid, which I feel is much more interesting. But I am sure there are those folks that just hate plaid.

I think my age is showing here but I was thinking the same thing... that looks like a screen shot from the show.
Lovin' the GTI plaid though. I would get leather if I were buying, but I love how VW continues the tradition, and it looks good.

@ wrinklebump- But that's my point, I've learned my lesson, bad.
frank908 says:

Also @ wrinklebump: Just to save face here, the number one reason I bought the Mini was to be able to fit into parking spaces in NYC for school, and to have some power and utility secondly along with it. Nothing else fits the bill on the market. Once I'm done with school, I'm done with the Mini forever!!!

Actually the GTI's plaid seat upholstery design is far more subdued than what you find in a great deal of European hatches. Plum or lime colored houndstooth patterns were fairly common in compacts like the Renault Twingo.
Perhaps those who are old enough can (or care to) remember a plum colored checked patterned was standard issue on Porsche's then flagship Euro market 928 in the late 1970s.

Pretty sure she's actually legal, boys. 23yo or something.
The plaid seats are just ugly, like grandma's furniture. A signature GTI trait to abandon.

im just so happy mine came with Black Leather. I really undesrstand the history of the plaid seats, but seriously, black leather makes the entire car looks soooo much more expensive!! i say this coz my brother got plaid seats and they are not nice to touch, and the overall look is cheaper. (well it IS cheaper).
i find that when it comes to polyester fabrics, the japs seems to have a better research for this kind of material. much softer and comfortable. (like the fabric of a RAV4 2002).

is anyone else sick of the Edmund's InsideLine not updating these blogs for days its very disappointing they used to update all the time, now it is rare to see an update even every three days apart (or more like every 2weeks) I WISH THEY WOULD UPDATE THEIR BLOGS MORE even if its about something simple like the exhaust smell or something i miss reading them every other day if not every day.
