2010 Volvo XC60: Popped a Panel

2009 volvo xc60 loose panel

I noticed a few weeks ago that a small panel underneath the gauges in our XC60 had come loose. I tried my best to snap the three prongs that hold it to the dash back in place, but while my skinny fingers were able to fit into the awkward space to push it up, my hand strength just wasn't enough to get the job done. I did manage to get one of the prongs back in place, which just made it look worse. Then I promptly forgot to mention it to anyone.

When I got in the Volvo this weekend, I noticed that the panel was off again. I didn't even try to push it back into place. If none of my strong-handed colleagues can pop it back into place, I guess we'll have to mention it at our next service visit.

I would suggest using a screwdriver (maybe two) to leverage it back into place.

Of course if you want to pay a extra $50+ in labor go right ahead.

That's really unusual for such a hidden panel to come loose & that too with 3 tabs. Was any LT editor monkeying around?

@hybris,

This issue would most certainly be fully covered under warranty, whether it's the dealer popping the panel back into place or replacing it.

So... did the XC60 catch a case of Aura-itis or something?

Probably be a recall on it.

I don't get it. I thought Volvos weren't supposed to be as crappy as the Aura.

When I saw this photo I literally laughed out loud. Of the three Volvo's I've driven, all of them had issues with panels popping out. Usually it was the panel underneath the steering column though. Too funny.

A five minute stop at the Volvo dealer will result in them popping it into to place no questions asked.

Understandable, given the previous comment. :)

As a current Volvo driver, I can easily and without a doubt say I would be happy to have a car with as few problems as the Aura! I know Volvo seems to think styling and fuel efficiency is what's holding them back in sales. I say wake up Volvo and examine how poorly your cars are built! It's easy to see why it took so long for Ford to find someone to offload the brand to. I can't wait to see how bad mine is when the odometer turns to 30,000 miles probably sometime late this year. And you can be willing to bet I let everybody know how terrible of a car this is, or I give them a ride and the car speaks for itself!

Seeing that gave me flashbacks of the Aura...

Funny how a bit of wear and tear on an 8 year old roughly used Corvette elicits cries of "GM makes crap!" but a panel pops off a brand new car from another manufacturer and not a peep is heard from the peanut gallery.

Cheap Chinese Crap!!!

How's that? :)

^ As of this moment, it's still cheap Swedish crap.
I do like the XC60 though. Very nice interior, outstanding styling, and good vehicle dynamics for not that much $$$.
