2009 Honda Fit: Test-Driving the Cupholder Open-Top

honda_fit_cupholder_cafelat.jpg

I've complimented our 2009 Honda Fit's driver-side cupholder before, but what I haven't mentioned is that it holds coffee so securely, you can drive around open-top.

I have a bit of a cafe latte habit. I don't like putting a sippy top on my beverage, because then I don't get to enjoy the crema before the foam dissolves. But in most cars, I then face the peril of having my latte splash onto surrounding upholstery and buttons that might get all sticky. The Fit is the only car I've driven in which I can leave the top off with a clear conscience.

looks like you get the benefit of the vent cooling it off for you as well! that's a nifty place for a cupholder.

Can't wait for a panic brake to send cafe latte down the vent :-)

Isn't that spilled liquid all around that coffee cup in this picture?

felonious says:

Slickersdip, that's what I thought too at first. However, I think it was lightly raining when the picture was taken.

All you need now is a 30-inch straw, and you're set.

ergsum says:

The cup size that works best is a venti.

Another thing that fits in the fit.
Oh great.....

The Oldsmobile Alero had one there too. Makes use out of what is usually wasted space.

Ah... the joy of not driving your own car...

Prediction - this cupholder will be a signpost to subsequent generations. A date when, in hindisight, Honda began it's decline and passed the mantle to Hyundai for creating fun cars. A date when Honda became masters of packaging, but they gave up their automotive mojo.

I have an 09 Fit and really like that cup holder, too. I put my stainless coffee cup there with lid, but have had spillage a few times thanks to max braking behind dufus drivers. Still a great cup holder, now need to fix drivers who don't merge onto highways with authority...

Felonious-- think you're exactly right. Looking at the window it's definitely be rained on. Thanks for clearing that up... definitely had raised an eyebrow in me before...

worthyofed says:

Yeah.... you can leave it open because it doesn't spill... or because you don't care if splashes on the cheap plastic surroundings?

Although now that I meantion that, it looks like it's raining outside... those must be rain drops.

I applaud the audacity of posting this.

(sighs)......now I've seen everything. When the cup holder becomes a main focal point of interest in a piece of automotive engineering, I would say that it's time I quit driving. Since cars don't seem to be judged for their performance or efficiency anymore but rather the quality of their cup holders, what's the point of even owning a car anymore as opposed to a paper coffee tray? Lame.

This is a long term blog. This is where you get to read about the little things of long term ownership.
It's a little entry about something other cars don't usually have. Did the earth shatter? No. It's a blog entry.

You want to Anthony Bordain your way to car journalistic snobdom, than stick to the road tests. Go to the Edmunds byzantine website structure and (literally) work your way through to the Fit's road test.

I agree with cruiserhead1....this blog is for the little fun and not so fun stuff of actually owning a car. 0-60, skid pad gs and that other stuff gets old after a while. One of the other posters was saying that numbers dont tell the whole story about a car and he was correct. I love the cupholders in my Mustang and hate them in my Stratus....too bad because I use the Dodge to commute and that is when I need the cupholder. So if one does not like the small stuff in this blog then I suggest it is the wrong blog to read.

jederino: I disagree. Name one fun car that Hyundai makes. I would wager that Hyundai is the new Toyota, but the Fit still represents the best of what Honda does: small and fun(er).

Honda was not the first with a cupholder in that place i use to own a 1997 Mazda MX-6 that had a cupholder just like that. Also the Toyota Yaris have one on each side vent

"The Fit is the only car I've driven in which I can leave the top off with a clear conscience."

I drive my Subaru with my top off all the time....oh wait, wrong idea.

So I recently took a trip to Italy, and was staying a few nights in a small town called Lajatico. Spent some time in the main square with an old Italian guy and he had some of the best advice I've ever heard about coffee:
"Take the time to sit down and enjoy your coffee. I do not serve my coffee in anything besides a nice mug." Then as we were sitting there, an old cinquecento drove by, honked and waved. I stirred my coffee slowly and regretted my eventual return to my job.

I wish I could always enjoy my coffee slowly, sitting down at a nice table with a warm evening breeze. Until then, I'll have to keep in mind that the Fit can handle topless driving.

jederino says:

@rollem83, I agree with the posters above that the Genesis Coupe has upped Hyundai's street cred, while Honda has marked a decline. Still, I am inclined to believe the Fit is a great little car which I'd take over a Corolla or Aveo.

Another thing that I like with this cup holder is is to put a can of soda with the vent pointing down. With the AC on it helps keep the soda cooler for a longer period of time.
