2009 BMW 750i: Tire Replacement

2009_bmw_750i_stokes2_1600.jpg

We ordered up a replacement tire for our 2009 BMW 750i after Josh broke it yesterday. Our local Santa Monica shop, Stokes Tire Pros, needed a day to secure the 275/40R19 Goodyear Excellence runflat.

This morning we drove over, swapped our corded mess for an inflatable tire and were on our way in about an hour. After tire disposal and installation we spent under 400 bucks, which was cheaper than the dealership wanted for rubber alone.

Total Cost: $395.74

Days Out of Service: 1

Right there: needed a day to secure the runflat. Plus, it is still a large premium over a conventional tire. Not into it. What if you were on a road trip and the tire store in Lodi didn't stock your runflat?

Tire Racks price was $311, so got a pretty good deal.

What is it about this picture that actually makes the 7 series look good??

@subaru123: Maybe the fact that it is good looking? My personal opinion of course.

I know it's a good deal for this model, but man, $400 for one tire!!! That's nearly what I hope to be paying for a set of P235's pretty soon...

What a huge waste of money....$400 bucks for a single tire...that obviously doesn't hold up too well...I also agree about being on a trip and the replacement being days away....

@carguy
I don't know why but this is the first time I've ever said "This car looks good". Before I only liked the 2004 & 2007 models.

$311 is pretty pricey; I try to stay under $200 per corner.

@subaru123
I totally agree. That's a good angle for that car.
And I think if I were to get one, I'd get a dark color like that too.

Four honey's for a tire. Status = Baller.

$400 is what we paid to put four times on our SUV. We got pretty good tires too, but did also come across a pretty good sale.

I guess that's the difference between driving a mass consumer vehicle and a more specialized vehicle.

That's a lot of coin but for anyone who can swing the payments on this car, it's likely not a big deal. Just for comparison, the stock Eagle RS-A's for my car (205/50-17) go for about $205 from TireRack and the Mazda dealer quoted $265 installed, lol. That is insane for such a skinny little tire! Tire prices in general are absurd.

RFTs really don't seem to be coming down in price either despite increasing use of them.

This is what happens when everyone wants huge wheels for the "look".

It's likely that the unique wheel/ tire size drives on the 750 drives up the price of the tire. After all this is a $100,000 car. BMW sells about 20,000 7 series globally per year and this is the first model year of production so you aren't going to say too many companies other than the OEM supplier make similar size tires.

RFTs for lesser BMWs (3 series) which have more common sized wheels run no more than $125 at Tire Rack. RFT repair fees for those capable of being repaired are in line with repair fees for non RFTs.

If you want to feel pity feel it for buyers of the $28K Camaro LT with the RS package and the 20" wheels.

The replacement tires are only made by Pirelli (P Zero Neros) and they run over $350 apiece at Tire Rack.

For a $28K car.

Run Flats suck! I don't care what benefit they have. On my 3-series they made the ride hard, reduced forward grip and were stupid expensive. And like you read here you have to wait a day or more to get a replacement if you needed one.

I swapped to Toyo tires and BBS wheels and the ride was better, forward grip was better and it didn't feel like the wheels bounced over ripped pavement. STOP forcing us to buy RFTs. The price to replace the entire set is like $1400 and for that price you can buy a cheap set of wheels and tires.

I don`t know man, went to tirerack, front tires are $219, rear ones $265.
Thats for the tires per se.

My mistake.

Meant the optional 21"-ers.

Which aren't RFTs and are $409 and $478 F/R respectively

Still in a $28K car.
