2009 BMW 750i: Thwack, Thwack, Thwack, Thwack

Tire-delam-717.jpg
This is what the left rear tire on our 750i looked like this morning after delaminating while rolling down the 405 freeway. Yes, those are cords.

Not a chance these two things are related.

We're replacing the tire.

Overall treadware looks well past spent. How many miles were logged on those?

I got AutoWeek in the mail today and they too are having tire issues with their long-term 750i.

I got a class action settlement notice for my old E90. Apparently BMWUSA/Bridgestone is reimbursing tire replacements due to premature wear.
Would this be related (burnouts aside)?

LOL at carguy622. I was thinking the same thing.

@e90_m3,

No, that was only for the crappy Turanza EL-42 RFTs from 2006. I got the same settlement notice. It was a problem with the tires themselves (cupping and premature wear). The Continentals and Bridgestone Potenzas on the same cars didn't have the problem.

Michelin tires are the only way to go on that car.

@e90_m3 & bimmerjay: I got the same class action settlement but 1) I no longer have my 2006 325i and 2) the dealership already paid for a new set of tires (Continentals) and I paid for the labor. Too, little, too late.

Maybe this is a silly question: do tires tend to wear out on the edges first while still maintaining tread in the middle? I thought this was a symptom of under-inflation (when *both* edges wear out before the middle). Or is it just set up this way for us to determine we need new tires before we completely run out of tread?

I know the photo depicts just the inner edge wearing out which can be a symptom of too much camber (BMW is known for that to aid in cornering).

Thanks,
Kevin

It's too much camber plus burnouts. That's all folks. Looks like the GT-R's old set.

They should have swapped in some ghetto tires for the burnout pics. I would be reluctant to burn away over $600.00's in 2 new tires for this beast.

Camber, tires, cords, burnouts, $$$, ok lesson learned!
