2010 Volvo XC60: What Do You Think?

car-of-the-week-717.jpg2010_volvo_xc60_ip.jpg

What do you think of these gauges?

Clean and sophisticated or too plain?

By the way, this picture was taken toward the beginning of our long-term test, so the mileage is way off.

The former, although I would prefer an actual gas and coolant temperature gauge.

I like the gauges themselves, but don't like the dot-matrix-style displays within them.

It conveys relevant information quickly & without confusion. It doesn't have the 'Visual Entertainment' so many cars have these days. No blinding chrome ring around gauges, clear lettering & simple black & white LCD cluster.

It is simple & classy. Sophisticated. I like it.

I'm with carguy and greenpony I want separate needle based fuel and coolant gauges and do away with any sort of dot matrix displays.

They're nice.

I think those are nice. I like how simple they are, but the simplicity of the displays inside is unimpressive.

Nice and classy.

i like the classy look.

Love them, very clean.
I'd use a bolder version of the same font.
Plain & simple can be over done tho if carried into entire cabin.
But guages are the right place for it.

Loved them when I test drove the XC60. The entire dashboard design is by far the best amongst its competitors.
Wish more cars had clean, simple, and well laid-out gages. Too many cars try to be fancy by putting on a light show (I'm taking to you, Mazda 3). The E9x 3-series gages are also just as good... now if only they will get rid of that stupid "mpg" meter in the sedans.

I think they look great. They're very "classic-contemporary." The digital center display just puts the "contemporary" in. :)

Too ripped off mercedes, but they do still look nice.

chavis10 says:

Better than any BMW's gauge cluster

stingray454 says:

I like the look of them, but I don't think they are easy to read. Not enough contrast, especially for the tach and redline, and the speedo number increments are too high.

hondacura4 says:

Simple but I hate having the screens inside as I like a full needle. In terms of gauges I prefer the gauges in older Hondas/Acuras and of course BMW's gauges.

@e90_m3: It's funny that Mazda does a light show in most of it's vehicles' gauges, but the Miata has some of the simplest and best gauges around. What that says to me is that the Miata is a serious driver's car and it's intended audience would not appreciate overdone gauges, while the rest of the line-up has to appeal to a much broader audience, and some people like all the pretty colors.

Works for me. Gauges need not be flashy to convey info. Other people may prefer something with a little more pizzaz, but they probably wouldn't be the target market for the XC60.

They look quite nice. I'm not sure that shiny, marked bezels is the most legible arrangement but it'll do.

audisport says:

I like them just fine. They are simple, which is perfect.

"The E9x 3-series gages are also just as good... now if only they will get rid of that stupid "mpg" meter in the sedans."

For some reason I really like that they have that feature Maybe its gimmiky and unclassy to some, but I think its a nice feature to have, and I think it helped be save some gas. (I have no idea how accurate it is though). For an aftermarket system, its $100+. I like the look of it in the gauges.

adamb1 says:

I don't like gages (speedo) that are incremented in 20's (20, 40, 60 mph). I think they should be done in 10's with major mark for 5's in between. Even better, 10's numbered in increments ending in 5 (15, 25, 35).

lmbvette says:

I like it from the standpoint of it being a piece of functional modern art. I can appreciate it's simplistic design.

However, as a source of critical vehicle information, I don't think it's well done.

I agree with what was said above, every 10 mph should be numbered. Also, more standard gauges should be displayed in the same format, not the chintzy looking dot matrix style screens. Have a few more of those neat looking gauges done but in appropriately smaller sizes surrounding the main gauges, like in every other car out there.

At least there aren't two...uhh.. water temp gauges ;)

Looks nice in a minimalist way. I too prefer BMW gauges and older Honda gauges... but this looks nice

oh look they went CHEAP! No coolant gauge? NO DEAL! May have saved the maker a few pennies, but they lost a sale from me.

lucien4 says:

I just noticed it doesn't indicate km in the speedometer. Bad if you drive to Canada since you then have to convert yourself... Typically most cars show both.

Otherwise looks ok but the LCD pixelation looks cheap (compare that to other luxury SUV's with higher resolution). Also reminds little bit of GM's gauges (Cadillac for instance).
