2009 Dodge Ram 1500: It's No Megacab and It's Not a Problem

dodgeram-rint-1600.jpg
You might remember the Megacab. It was Dodge's attempt to out-crewcab Chevrolet and Ford and it was a marketing failure.

It was huge in a way that wasn't necessary. It made the exterior of the Ram look out of proportion and the benefits inside seemed minimal. It didn't last very long.

The latest version of the Dodge Ram has a more traditional crew cab and as you can see, there is more than enough passenger room. Cargo room is pretty solid too if you fold up the seat bottoms.

Sure, instances will come up when a little extra room in back would help. But having a 10-liter diesel up front might help every once in a while too and Dodge hasn't bothered making that an option. Yet.

A 10 liter V12 Quad-Turbocharged monster... I can't think of any company willing to attemp such a thing.

the turbo 4 cyl Cummins is a great motor. Dodge probably has the best HD rigs w/ the 2500 & 3500.

I wish Toyota would drop a Hino motor in the Tundra and offer up a 1 ton rig

I wouldn't say it was a failure at all. In fact they sold pretty well which is probably why they are still available in the Heavy Duty rigs. As well the cummins that is in the HD's is an turbo inline 6, not a 4 cylinder.

@cruiserhead1

I can't really see any of the Japanese automakers making 3/4 ton or 1 ton truck just because the concept of a person privately own such a large truck is alien to them.

IMHO Also they should wait until they get a better grip on the 1/2 ton market has well.

The Mega Cab still exists, just not in the 1500 series Ram.

Mr. Hellwig - the Megacab (in 2500 and 3500) guise is not dead and will be available soon (in the 1st quarter sometime as a 2010 model). You can even 'build' one on your Edmunds.com website (or the Dodge.com website). Since your research department evidently needs some real talent, to whom should I send my resume?

It may not be dead but I don't see the point.

Look at the leg room in the above photo. It's huge, you would need a limo to have more legroom then that. Unless you are over 7 feet tall, the regular version will now allow everyone to lounge in the exaggerated idea of space that everyone now seems to think they need.

Why would anyone chop the bed space and pay extra money for the megacab now?

firstwagon - I completely agree that the popularity of the Megacab will now be greatly reduced, and I'm glad Dodge finally came out with a real crew cab. I think the Quad Cab design in the previous generation Dodge truck was just Chrysler being lazy and not wanting to design or spend the money on making a real crew cab truck. They didn't want to have to engineer another frame length (or two) for the crew cab configuration in long or short bed formats. I think that's how the Megacab was actually born - the length is a Quad Cab / Long Bed frame with a longer cab and a shorter bed. I do own a 2004 Quad Cab with the Cummins, and know several guys that would've bought a Dodge/Cummins combo if they'd had a 'real' crew cab in the previous generation truck. That said, I have almost 100K on my truck, and the only issue I've had is a water pump replaced under warranty. That's it - and the truck will pull anything I want to pull and delivers about 17 - 17.5 average in mixed city and highway driving. But I sure would like a crew cab....
