2010 Volvo XC60: More Than Meets The Eye

XC60-at-Fry's.jpg

At first glance this looks like a harmless and uninteresting photo of our long-term 2010 Volvo XC60 at a shopping center during a last ditch run at some Christmas shopping. Which it is.

But it's also much more than that.

It's also a shot of our new used long-term car, which we just bought to replace our beloved E46 M3 and our mostly loved Ferrari 308. Now, I'm not going to tell you what it is, but I promise you that it is in this photo somewhere and an introduction to the car's long-term test will hit Inside Line and this blog in the next few weeks.

Anyone care to guess which car it is?

Happy Holidays.

The c5 directly next to the Volvo would be too obvious, wouldn't it?

cobryson says:

Lexus GS?

bodyblue says:

07:44 AM, 12/25/09

Oh lord not ANOTHER BMW......that old "5" next to the 'vette? GAG

lug1115 says:

Bobdyblue: That's a Mercedes, not a Bimmer.

Oh please, please, please let it be the Astrovan that is in the background. That would be so very entertaining.

Could be something obvious like that c5 vette, or something fun like the pimped tahoe in front of the volvo, or something I'd find boring like that lexus, or perhaps something out of the ordinary, like that old benz, which could be a diesel. It just better not be either of the two hybrids i spot in this picture.

ddoouugg says:

Definitely the C5 Corvette. This sounds interesting. I'm actually hoping you guys don't like it. I just don't like vette's, even though I acknowledge their performance capabilities.

I vote for the Mercedes. Is it a 240D or 300D? Luxury + economy, 80's style.

stephen987 says:

09:49 AM, 12/25/09

There's a black Lexus ES a few doors down, but who cares. And the W123-series MB is a flat awful car by today's standards. So my money's on the C5.

konocar400h says:

09:58 AM, 12/25/09

I actually wouldnt mind if it was the Lexus GS a couple spots down. Are those old lexus's really all that reliable in their old age? But hey, I would never complain about getting the vette either.
I think my favorite would be that Mercedes though...

vt8919 says:

11:50 AM, 12/25/09

I think it's a Toyota Camry... it's the only other car on there with a yellow license plate.

bodyblue says:

11:57 AM, 12/25/09

OOOOPs! Next time I will expand the picture! An old MB would not be too bad....just tired of BMWs

greenpony says:

12:03 PM, 12/25/09

lug1115, you'd replace the M3 and the 308 with an Astro van? Come on. Gotta be the C5.

questionlp says:

12:16 PM, 12/25/09

Honda Ridgeline?

auto4fun says:

12:43 PM, 12/25/09

Oh please please please let it be the 10ish yr old Mitsubishi Diamante a few to the right or the brown full-size Ford van that's blocked by the XC60...jk, I'm really hoping it's the old Mercedes diesel or the C5.

asdfkj says:

The decision to add a shopping cart to the fleet is rather unconventional. Looking forward to slalom and skidpad numbers

o_or30_0 says:

01:30 PM, 12/25/09

The C5 makes sense to me. If your looking for something to replace an m3 and a ferrari i would bet on the c5. Everything else doesnt make sense....then again it seems to obvious...

mptlptr says:

01:57 PM, 12/25/09

C5Z06. Looking forward to reading about it. Should be waaaaaaaaay more reliable than the 308 and the E46 M3.

billt9 says:

02:55 PM, 12/25/09

Nissan Xterra! right above the Lexus GS.

firstwagon says:

03:05 PM, 12/25/09

The old Mercedes would be interesting.

The Econoline would be worth a laugh or two as well.

porschedreams says:

03:07 PM, 12/25/09

Well, Edmunds vehicles never have license plate frames - they mess up the photos and edmunds isnt (hopefully) paid to advertise dealers. As far as I can make out, the Volvo and the C5 are the only two w/o frames. So yeah, money's on the C5.

spiralingagony says:

03:37 PM, 12/25/09

300D FTW!

talk about adding some character to the fleet... =)

subytrojan says:

03:46 PM, 12/25/09

Was hoping for a used Porsche. :(

C5 or Merc would be fine! :o)

DCuerpoJr says:

05:52 PM, 12/25/09

I think it's the silver Honda Ridgeline in the far background. They don't have enough truck/suv's in the fleet and the Ridgeline would seem to pull direct comparisons to the Dodge Ram.

DLu says:

07:47 PM, 12/25/09

I like the C5. however, just to throw some diversity in, I am going to say that it's going to be that previous-gen Merc ML way back there. mabe a V8 ML that becomes a project car, to beat the X5M. hahaha. i don't see a post-'07 AMG version around???

zcalvert says:

07:48 PM, 12/25/09

yeah... prob the c5, but i really hope its the old benz

vt8919 says:

07:53 PM, 12/25/09

Wouldn't it be hilarious if the vehicle in question wasn't actually in the nearest row, rather behind those cars so you can only see the roof? I mean, technically it's in the picture...

adavis2493 says:

How about the one between the Benz and the ES300? (Shopping Cart)

I too, would love to read about the Astrovan....

But it's the Vette.

I love your old car reviews....

Caption for this picture: "Yes, I'll have a used C5, a diet root beer and a large Fry..."

hybris says:

Its probably the C5. That said I really wish it was the Mercedes especially if its the diesel (Having a 350 SDL might have something to do with that.)

Is that an Escalade, far-right side of the pic (last car)?? Is Insideline going bling?? :P

C5 Z06!!!!!! Sweeeeet!!!

rx777 says:

11:24 PM, 12/25/09

clearly, they are taking the prius as a project car and trying to get it to out-perform the lexus lf-a......

or the c5 that the volvo is parked awfully close to. i could see how that would be something one editor would do to another and something an editor wouldnt do to another driver

throwback says:

I am going with the Subburban in front of the Volvo. Evreyone needs a good tow vehicle.

stephen987 says:

07:51 AM, 12/26/09

Yes, but what would they use to tow the Suburban when its tranny gives out?

questionlp says:

09:43 AM, 12/26/09

@vt8919,

They were probably trying to find something to make the seat warmers actually produce the proper amount of heat. Just hope they didn't get any white-label specials :)

wrinklebump says:

09:47 AM, 12/26/09

If there's an Equinox or Fusion Hybrid somewhere in that picture, that's probably the car.

audikrazy1 says:

if you look really closely there is a silver Mercedes ML in the top right corner that looks just to perfectly placed. i'm going to go with that!

mercedesfan says:

10:59 AM, 12/26/09

It has to be the C5 Corvette, even as obvious as it seems. It is the most logical progression and the most exciting.

The old Benz would be funny, but anyone who has ever driven a W123 turbodiesel knows that the InsideLine crew really wouldn't take to it (0-60mph in just a tick over 30 sec doesn't really seem like their style). :)

And I would hope it wouldn't be the old ML, those things were simply awful cars from an electrical standpoint. They'd be crazy.

Where's the introduction post thing

vt8919 says:

hondacura4 says:

I was actually hoping for a late 90's 6MT NSX-T but the C5 Z06 is just as exciting. Can't wait to read about it.

jriz says:

08:00 AM, 12/27/09

You're all wrong. It's the Fry's shopping cart. The Edmunds long term fleet has hit the skids and we're turning to the official transport of the poor house.

vt8919 says:

01:55 PM, 12/27/09

Jriz: I heard a rumor that the Edmunds crew will get driving tips from Johnny Knoxville. Forget the Toyota Camry, this cart is a REAL grocery-getter!

bodyblue says:

"Where's the introduction post thing"

Here you go....they usually wait a few weeks before the official intro.

lol @ shopping cart

I'll say the Xterra next to the brown tree.

I know it's the C5, but that Mercedes would be an awesome addition.

I'd also LOVE to see a 5th gen Civic Si added. You guys need some double wishbone in your lives.

A new vette would get enough criticism, I cant imagine how bad things are going to get for a C5 vetter with its plastic interior. I predict 50% of the posts will be about the interior plastics, 25% will be about how the car is too big to feel like a Miata on a canyon road and the rest will be about the engine and reliability.

big_black says:

08:54 AM, 12/28/09

Personally, I think its a new E-Class. If you look behind the shopping cart there's what looks like an 2010 E-Class tail light.

crazydavefym says:

10:49 AM, 12/28/09

I'm thinking its the new Camry Hybrid with temp tags down the row. Could be a Fusion Hybrid vs Camry Hybird showdown.
