I'm used to getting around 300 mi fuel range in most vehicles; that's my expectation.
And I don't like to go much below a 1/4 tank, just in case.
Our long-term 2009 Mazda 6 has a 2.5L I-4 EPA rated at 21 City, 30 Hwy, 24 Combined (but only has 170 hp).
400 miles on a tank? Can do easy.
I actually got 410 mi on one tank of my Vegas holiday -- pretty good, huh?
What are your expectations for fuel range?

My old Saab 9000 used to get around 415 (26mpg) miles to a tank, and my current 900 SE Turbo gets around 375-400 (24-25mpg).
I usually aim for around 400 miles from a tank, is that too ambitious?

I want an easy 350 miles before I fill up, knowing I have a couple gallons left. My G35 averages 21 mpg.

Average 550 in my 2006 Jetta TDI. Won't impress the chicks with the horsepower though.
I'm terribly annoyed by anything less than 700km (around 430 miles) or expected range, but that's just me used to euro diesels.

My wife's 2009 Accord will blow past 400 miles with mixed use - I think we hit over 500 on one tank (all highway) on our trip from Dallas to Phoenix. My 2009 Civic Si requires more regular fillups as it gets to about 330 miles before the light comes on with 80% highway/20% city driving. While I wish it had slightly better range, it isn't that bad to me.

400 from my Yukon around town, easily 500 on a highway trip. Would love to try for 600, theoretically quite possible with a 31 gallon tank. But the wife gets antsy, and I usually decide to look for a good price and stop anyway when I get down to a quarter tank. My all-time high was about 550 miles. The light had been on for 50 miles, so even I got a little anxious and caved in. Durn thing only needed 28 gallons.

I think this depends on how/where you drive. If I have a week where I am driving only in rush-hour on San Jose's congested roads sometimes I can't even get 300 miles out of my 24 gal tank. On long highway drives I have gone 600 miles before needing to fill-up and I usually average between 350-450 miles. If you live in a big metropolis your idea of fuel range is going to be vastly different than those who live in small cities.

16.9 gallon tank and gas mileage of 14MPG or less and that's optimistic, but pure highway driving yields up to 415 miles.

'04 Mazda6i, 390-400 in winter (New England), prob 410 in summer, mixed driving. When the light comes on, I consistently have 3 gallons left; that means about 80 miles of gentle driving left, more than enough distance to find a cheap gas station. I used to drive between memphis and st. louis a lot, which is just about 300 miles, so for many years i was fine with 300+ range with a couple of gallons remaining. now i expect 400 minimum (the G37x does that in mixed driving; the '04 Forrester barely gets 270, which annoys me very much).
when people say "quarter tank," do they usually mean "total tank volume divided by 4, regardless of what that stupid needle reads," or is it "when the notoriously inaccurate needle hits a certain mark that is about 3/4 way down?"

My SRT8 Jeep gets about 230 in the city and just breaks 300 on the highway with about a 20 gal tank. I recently bought an FJ Cruiser and the tank is tiny and with the 3 inch lift and 33" tires only about 210 city, not sure on hwy as I have not taken it anywhere yet. My wife gets 330 miles pretty much all the time in the city in her '01 BMW 330Ci.

Some of you forgot to mention the size of your fuel tank. e.g. it would be easy to "blow by" 400 miles if your fuel tank was 20 gallons and you averaged 20mpg.

The best I have done is 550 miles all highway before filling up. I just set the adaptive cruise at 70 and let it go. That trip I averaged 25 MPG and could have gone another 50 miles.
I average 21 mpg on my 40 mile daily commute which is about 33 highway miles. I fill up at 420 miles and usually have over 4 gallons left in the tank. Its pretty easy to hit 500 miles without filling.

I'm very happy if I get 400 miles highway out of our 02 Tahoe (24 or 26 gallon tank, not sure as it didn't come with a owner's manual). We average about 19 mpg at 75 mph so that leaves us a small reserve. Around town, 275 is a great result.
My S2000 used to return 300+ mile tanks on long highway trips, but was lucky to break 220 miles in town (12 gallon fillups on a sub 13.2 gallon tank). Now that I run it on ethanol I'm estatic to get 160-170 miles to a fillup in mixed driving. I think I could break 200 miles highway only, but what's the point since ethanol is hard to find on the west coast.
My EvoX is capable of hitting 325+ miles highway (13+ gallon fillup), but around town 200-225 is more like it.
When it comes to range they all make me miss my departed G35 Coupe. LA to Phoenix (400+ miles) was a cakewalk and left me plenty of gas (nearly a 1/4 tank) to toodle around town with for a couple of days. My best tank ever was on the way from LA to Bonneville. Despite the climb in elevation, I was still able to go nearly 450 miles before the fuel light came on (over 27 mpg). Definite 500+ range in that car if you keep the speed down.

If my Outback goes 300 miles on a tank, it's because it ran out of gas at 270 miles and I pushed it for another 30.

89 Volvo 240 DL, 2.3L, 5-speed, 16 gallons, 30 MPG, 400 miles (450 would be possible except is has the world's scariest gas guage - points below empty with 4 gallons left).

I usually fill up with about an 1/8th of a tank left...that usually means somewhere in the 10 to 11 gallon range for my 14.7 gallon tank in my GTI...at 27 to 30 MPG typical, that means I expect at least something in the high 200s from my car and usually end up with somewhere in the neighborhood of 300 to 340.

Used to have a 95 Accord. 2900 lb car, skinny tires, gutless little 4 cylinder, 17 gallon tank. Could break 300 city, 450 highway with a couple gallons to spare.
Around that time uncle had a 95 Camry. 3000 lb car, also a gutless 4 cylinder, 18.5 gallon tank, 500 miles highway no problem.
Don't understand why 15 years and 500 lbs later the gas tanks have barely budged such that 400 miles without getting down to fumes is now an achievement.
Nissan got it right with 20 gallons in the Altima but they're about the only one.

The family 2001 Volvo S80 T6 (twin-turbo) 2.8L has seen over 550 miles on mostly-highway stretches. Fun and peppy car to drive, not to mention comfortable to cruise in. And pretty good for a 21-gallon tank (80 liters). Averages about 20 mpg in mixed driving.
The family 2004 Toyota Sienna could do better...3.3L V-6, 20-gal tank, about 17.2 mpg overall, according to the trip computer. Annual trips to Florida usually see 24 mpg on average, so over the 400-mile mark there. Wish it had a larger tank for more cruising between fill-ups.
My 1987 325iC has been averaging 23.7 mpg in mixed "spirited" driving. As in I'm a leadfoot. Gotta love that inline six. But I'm pretty conscious about shifting, and the 14.5-gallon tank can take me a smidge over 300 miles before I fill up (I usually let it run into the red).

Both my Legacy wagon and Grand Cherokee go over 500 miles on the hwy (if I don't push too hard) and between 300 and 400 miles around town.
Just costs more to fill up the Jeep... 86L tank instead of a 60 L tank.
