2009 Hyundai Genesis: Sales Figures So Far

genesis_salesytd.jpg

I haven't seen too many copies of the Hyundai Genesis on the road, but based on sales numbers the car seems to be selling pretty well. As of the end of November, year-to-date sales were 19,535 units*. That's more than the Audi A6 (5,990, including the S6), the Lexus GS (6,367) and the Lincoln MKS (15,387). Better selling competitors include the Acura TL (30,453), BMW 5 Series (36,195) and Chrysler 300 (34,154).

Considering the Genesis is a new model from a brand not well known for premium or luxury cars, I'd guess Hyundai is pretty pleased with the car's success so far.

*EDIT: Editor Sadlier pointed out to me that Hyundai combines sales numbers for the sedan and Genesis Coupe. Therefore, the above 19,535 number can't be directly compared. Should I come across broken-out numbers, I'll make another update.

It's pretty sad that the new TL is doing well, and the A6 is doing pretty badly.

Interesting to see the 300 near the top of that list.

@brn: Probably a lot of fleet sales.

I second carguy622. I think I've gotten my fair share of 300 Rentals from Hertz.

You forgot to mention the E-Class, its figure is at 37,635 units for 2009. That does include both the totally redesigned model and the remaining 2009 vehicles that were offered in the summer with heavy incentives, however.

Back on topic, that is pretty impressive for the Genesis line. I know Hyundai expected better, but that's a darn good showing for a company that many still view very poorly (it drives me nuts when people do, just like when people say that GM builds terrible cars, c'mon people get with the times!).

I was at the airport a few days ago and there were 300's everywhere in the rental lots, I'm guessing that yes they've really pushed out a lot to fleets.

Hyundai debuted the Genesis in the worst automobile slump in decades! Wow what a gamble! They could have easily sold only 5000 if it wasn't such a solid product. The new 2011 Sonata at under 20K has the makings of a huge success.

I`m glad is selling well....even with the coupe in the mix.
Go hyundai go, keep pressuring the other lazy/expensive manufacturers.

I love it when I hear about Hyundai's success and growth.

I like rooting for the underdog.

Chrysler significantly cut fleet sales this year, so the 300 isn't the fleet queen it was in 2007 and 2008. I suspect many in rental fleets are 2008s.

I wonder what Genesis Coupe sales were since Hyundai is doing a lot of promotion/ads on the coupe.

If you look at November sales numbers look little bit different:

A6: 527 (will be redesigned next year)
TL: 2,059
300M: 1,918
Genesis (sedan+coupe): 1,751

However I disagree little bit with the competitors. I don't think the A6 and GS are direct competitors (+10K). The ES and A4 are more likely competitors.

A4: 2,532
ES: 4,110

As of June, the CEO of Hyundai's US operations said the Genesis sedan and coupe were selling in approximately equal volume. That was when the coupe just came out, but it gives a very rough estimate of the sales breakdown.

Hyundai is bigger than you might think. Perhaps you should be cheering on Chrysler.

I have seen several sedans, but not a single coupe on the roads. As I had considered the coupe previously, I have been looking for them.

I wonder if Hyundai will spin off the genesis line, along with a mid- and large-size SUV/crossover, and create an upscale brand like Lexus/Infiniti/etc.

the TL is not selling well, its sales are down from last year and way off previous levels. The Genesis sedan was selling under 2000 units a month when it wasn't joined by the coupe. That is respectable for a new nameplate, but not earth shattering considering the heavy advertising done for this car. I'm sure sales will improve in future years.

The A6 has never been a volume seller so beating the A6 (or GS) isn't really anything to brag about. I think Genesis sales should be benchmarked vs the ES350, 300, Lacrosse and TL in sales. Those vehicles compete in its price range and have similar power- at least to the V6 car.

300 sales are way down from previous highs. That vehicle used to sell around 10k units a month in its prime.

Hyundai is so pleased, now the Equus is coming. It is good though, this should make Lexus step up their games, Lexus is falling behind in recent times.
