2009 Ford Flex: Holy Crap! 40,000?!?

flex40k_2.jpg

I was driving the Flex back to the office after a long day of photography when I noticed the odo. 40,000? Are you kidding me? 40? 40,000?

I don't think I've seen a long-termer get racked up like this in a short amount of time. Ever. And I've been here almost 11 years!

I think it's safe to say we LOVE this vehicle for road trips. Or just love this car. Period.

That speed-o sucks. Hard to tell the which is the tach and speed-o at a quick glance.

@beemer11: I don't see the problem. No worse than VW with the tach in x100 RPM. Besides who would confuse the two for more than 5 seconds.

I'm sure the typical Flex buyer would get used to which-is-which quickly. What's more confusing is when your car is in the shop and your loner has the gauges swapped (tach on the left as opposed to the right, or vice versa). It takes a while before you get used to glancing on the other side of the cluster to see speed.

^Seriously. I doubt anyone who drove this car for more then 5 minutes would look and think 'wow I'm going down the highway at 2 MPH and turning 70 RPM'.

I think they look really good. Simple and easy to read, like they should be.

It really qualifies as the best long term car ever........few, if any really, (sunroof gap not withstanding) quality issues and a ton of miles and by far more positive posts than negative.......has any car performed better...well except for the Focus of course. :)

Keep the Flex for 100K or longer. Show it regular maintenance but no special love....see how it holds up.

If you can't tell which is the tach and which is the speedo then I think you need glasses.

actualsize says:

We're thinking we might do exactly that, rick8365. And in the spirit of a 100k effort, I'll most likely take this on my twice-annual Oregon trip -- again. It might seem redundant, but I'll be able to account for another 2,500 miles, if not more, in a couple of weeks. The winter trip demands more luggage space than the summer one, so the Volvo XC60 is simply too small.

Do it Dan! What a great idea...oh and why not take the Edge? Oh thats right it is in witness protection.

Actually Dan, I'd be more interested in seeing how the Ecoboost in the new Flex would work. Is there a chance you guys can swap this for the Ecoboost one?

subaru123 says:

@bodyblue
They still do have the RX400h and the Edge to my knowledge. On Dan's last trip I suggested taking either one of those and he responded he wouldn't because the luggage would be stacked too high and block visibility. However all of luggage fit in the A4 Avant and 750i so maybe he lied???

I agree the speedo and tach are easy to differentiate. Even at a quick glance. Plus their digits are large and well placed. Very clean. Just get rid of that faux wood trim and everything will be right with the world. :-)

100K or bust...!

Finally a long-termer with some real miles on it. Speaks very well of the Flex that it has so many miles and is still pleasing the Edmunds.com crew.

Glad to hear, Dan.

I think it would be interesting to see how it goes over time/miles and at the same time provide a useful utility vehicle/road tripper for the IL staff and families. I am mixed about it being the conveyance of choice again for Oregon because it would be nice to see/read about another vehicle. But then again it would be interesting to see how the Flex's performance compares to previous trips. And, it speaks volumes that you and your family are smitten enough with it to use it again.

Really you guys should drive this thing until it has a stroke or something. It's gotta be the most well-respected LT car in the fleet, ever. Except for maybe the R8.

I can't wait to get mine, when the Limited trim starts shipping with telescoping steering wheels! :)

Climbed inside one of these for the first time yesterday at the LA Auto Show. While I found the interior design to be a bit stodgy, the materials and build quality were top-notch. Given the opportunity, I think I'd take a Flex Ecoboost over a Taurus SHO.

(I was SO disappointed by the rear legroom in the new Taurus. There literally seemed to be the same amount of legroom in that car as in the Fusion/Milan, which speaks very highly of those cars and very poorly of the Taurus.)

And I think the reason Dan hasn't taken any other cars to Oregon lately is because there haven't been any other cars in the fleet that are capable of doing it!
