2009 Dodge Ram: Scraaaaaaape!

car-of-the-week-717.jpgdodge_ram_damage_1600.jpg

OK, let's hear it. Call me an idiot. I can take it.

I was pulling into a parking space in Inside Line's test-car garage, and scraaaaape, POP, went the right side of the full-size Dodge Ram.

"Shoot," I muttered. (Not really, just trying to keep it clean).

I scraped the truck's side on an, uh, inconveniently placed cement pole.

Based on the loud noise, I feared the damage would be much worse. Turns out, the loud popping noise was a body panel cringing and flexing back into place.

Still, I managed to take out three separate panels, a feat my boss, Editor in Chief Scott Oldham wasn't afraid to point out: "What did you do? Confirm you made contact and then floor it?," he asked.

No estimate yet, but rest assured I'll be paying my stupid tax for some time to come.

That'll buff out with a little bit of wax... or maybe not.

Memo to Kelly: Trucks are bigger than cars.

Seriously, the amount of grief that your co-workers will now be able to give you is ALMOST worth what you did to this poor truck.

I hate underground parking lots :(

well... those poles are insanely annoying - both in terms of visibility and as an impediment.
shows how pointless a huge truck like the Ram is if you live in a city like LA where most driving involves congested roads and tight parking.

(maybe just a little bit of an idiot...)

I've never been a big fan of big vehicles. Even when renting, I will return to the counter and request something smaller b/c I just don't like to have to negotiate all of that bulk around. Sorry to hear of your accident, glad you're OK.

Accidents suck but at least you're OK. My Miata has a nice dent on the front fender that I'm driving around with.

My ex-wife used to do this sort of thing constantly with her Lexus GX. All four corners of that vehicle had scrapes like this.

miraa says:

I did that to my previous car. Exact same thing. :(

canddmeyer says:

Sometimes it's just easier to back it in.

Drive one everyday and you won't think twice about the size. I went from a Neon to a Quad Cab Ram 6 years ago. I ran over a lot of curbs at first. But now, I don't give it a second thought. You just get used to it.

audisport says:

I did the exact thing to my 2006 Ram on the same exact spot of the truck that she did. It happens when you drive something this huge.

If you can't drive, just admit it.

Aw. :(

The character you gave the Ram helped Jay and his team finish second in their Batmobile, though! :o)

Structural engineers nitpick...

It's a concrete column not a "cement pole".

hybris says:

I hope that this incident show not just to you but all the Edmunds staff that driving a full truck believe it or not take more skill than what you might think.

My wife did something similar to a rental Corolla. The driver's side door scraped the concrete wall when she was turning.
Credit card company picked up the repair bill and it was almost $1000 including a few days of lost rental revenue.

Boy Kelly, you and Chrysler vehicles don't have mix very well together, do they? First, your husband takes out the Commander, then you bang up the Ram. Quick, somebody hide the keys to the Challenger! ;-)

johnnyturbo says:

@schildt,
Just to be clear, Kelly's husband did not "take out the Commander". Some moron blasted out of a parking lot into a six-lane-wide surface street full of moving vehicles, struck a Subaru and sent it careening across the road. Her husband was trying to avoid hitting the innocent victim's car heading toward the Jeep. Here's hoping Karma took care of the idiot...

Awesome go-fast blur lines!
Did you put it on yourself?
Wow it makes the truck look like it's really fast!

I used to drive a 40' tour bus. Whenever my trips were over, my happy place is a little subcompact. I can drive a big truck like that, but I don't necessarily like it.

IMO, backing into stalls is the best way to navigate around cement poles, if you know what you're doing. You have much more room to swing the front (2 traffic lanes compared to that tiny little parking space).

Haha. Yeah, I know. I just thought it was funny. Two Chryslers both get damaged with Kelly inside. Also a little funny, Kelly also posted a entry about the Jeep Compass getting damaged in a school parking lot. 'Cmon Kelly, do you have it out for Chryslers? ;)

sgude says:

bkochuk: Nahhh... she bought her GX about two months before our first date. It is black, and it was a constant battle for me to keep it clean. When she kept scraping it, I just gave up and concentrated on other things. Our divorce was for other, much more serious crap, but it was clear who the car enthusiast in the family was!

co_05si says:

You can blame the stupid architect, who used square columns, for most of this mess. If they had spec'd round columns instead, the contact patch would have been about an inch long. It would also be easier to negotiate due around them due to the lack of corners.

chunky_azian says:

I used to have an '03 Dodge Ram 2500 4x4 and could park it on a dime, traded it for my Grand Cherokee and now have trouble placing it when I park, my wife thinks it's hilarious.
