"You want me to put this tree on THAT car?" the Xmas tree guy said in amazement.
"Yup," I replied. "It'll be fine. It's only a 10-footer."
"Whatever pal, it's your car."
The best part was on the way home, when we stopped at a redlight next to a guy in a Suburban with teeny five-foot tree on his roof. He thought I was a fool. And I was thinking the exact same thing about him.
And no, the tree did not damage the BMW.
Fact is, before the SUV began its reign as America's defacto familymobile 20 or so years ago, millions and millions of Americans got their Christmas trees home on the roof of a family car, and they did it that way for 80 or 90 years. Yesterday I proved this is still possible, regardless of what that jerk in the Suburban thinks.
Besides, now my kids call it the BMW Mtree.

Would you really do that if it were *your* car alone, Chief?
Sweet tree, btw. You should use Stiggy keychains as ornaments.

I've put a Christmas tree on the roof of my 3 series 4 times. Never had any problems!

Oh it makes me want to pine fir an M3 even more, because it's got two trunks.
I guess BMW is trying to branch out even more. Did the M3 have even more bark to its bite with the tree on top?
How high did the speedometer needle go?

You have a CX-9 and you picked the M3 for tree duty??

On a much, much more serious note...
I still think that sedans and wagons are very capable hauling vehicles for DINKs or small families, but the "bigger is better", "holier than thou" and "keeping up with the Jones'" mentality is the reason why SUVs, and now crossovers, seem to be required to have a versatile vehicle.
I do understand the potential need for a large SUV if you need to carry 3+ kids and some cargo around.
Sport wagons for the versatility win, coupes for the awesomeness win!

Scott, you are crazy.
How is your family liking the CX9 so far?

I wasn't trying to outdo Scott's kids, in fact I chuckled when I read it. Instead, I wanted to extend the punishment :)

Why buy a sedan if you can't use it? I see no problem with this use of the M3. In fact, I encourage it. :)

It's just a car. It's supposed to be used, get scratched, have rock chips, haul ass while carrying Xmas tree and your family. Glad that M3 being used like a normal car.
Besides, if you baby the M cars too much, don't rev it, don't drive it, don't drive them on a daily basis, they'll rot. You're supposed to drive them hard on a daily basis, otherwise they'll just become useless like the athlete that don't practice everyday.

@bimmerjay
1. Would Scott really want to scratch his own car?
2. He was decent enough to put a blanket down on the roof first
3. Did Scott have the Play Boy channel on while taking his family around???

@subaru123: I wouldn't put a towel on my M3 for fear of dust trapped in the cloth and sanding the paint.
@e34bmwlover: I drive the heck out of my m3, but I think people need to be a bit less callous to the paint job. I'm afraid Ol' Scott just takes liberties at cars that do not belong to him.
majin_ssj_eric says:

I don't care how many towels he put down. This is just blatant disrespect of a beautiful and focused driving machine. M3's were not made to carry xmas trees on their roofs. The Suburban driver was right and Scott should be banned from the M3 from now on....

You've gotta do what you've gotta do. If it really is a liveable vehicle then it's goingvti have to haul sooner or later. Glad to see a blanket was put down.
cwmoo740 says:

I approve.
Besides, who wouldn't do this without putting a blanket down first? Or even two or three blankets? That would just be plain stupid.
And honestly, in the past 10 or so years that I've been cutting down my own trees we have never visibly scratched a car. You just have to be careful and use some common sense and it'll be fine.
To be fair, though, this is coming from someone whose mom put a 5-foot or so tree on the roof of an '97 Mercedes SL320 once. haha

There are two reasons there is a tree on the M3:
1. It makes for lots of comments and page views.
2. It’s a rental essentially. Do you really think if Mr. Oldham owned the M3 it would be used like this?
Its why you need to be very wary of buying lease returns.

bimmerjay says: You have a CX-9 and you picked the M3 for tree duty??
Of course, the CX-9 is privately leased by Scott and the M3 is just a beater loaner, that's what loaner car is for, rackless abuse, it is the best!

It looks reasonable to me.
I tied an overstuffed chair into the back of my 350Z this past summer after answering a craigslist ad. I got a lot of weird looks from other drivers but the car was no worse for wear post trip.
I agree with Scott on this topic. Sometime in the past 15 years we over-utilitized our lives (mcmansions, monster SUVs). Making due with less is a virtue.
threem says:

Don't really understand the problem here. The tree is not going to kill the car. We carried our tree home on the roof of our 07 Rabbit. It was us, and a slew of HUGE SUVs, who still had to tie the tree to the roof. I also applaud the idea that a sedan is all you need for 99% of life, even if you have kids. Our "Need" for huge vehicles is more manufactured than actual.
lazyhater says:

Using a M3 like a truck is making due with less?

lol, good point.
I suppose using an M3 like a truck is making due with less space, not less overall excess.

@Redliner...taken in Waldorf, MD prior to 1996 - 1999 time-frame...which is to say, I lived there then and was shown the picture in person before the internet got to see it. Maybe the locals got together and staged it, but I'm highly doubtful of a Photoshop.
I think that Oldham was just trying to adjust the old adage about porcupines and BMWs...
