Le sigh. Our 2009 Audi S5 sure looks good on my driveway. On the rare occasion that I get to take a fancy car home, I like to imagine that I own it. But what sort of person with what sort of job would I have to be to own this Brilliant Red sport-luxury car? A TV producer with one successful show under her belt? An entertainment lawyer? Or perhaps Heidi from The Hills?
Eesh.

I always used the simple formula of your gross annual salary has to be 2X the price of the car. i.e. if you make 150K, you can afford at most a 75K car regardless of your other living situation and lifestyles.

^^Or, if you want to be clever with your money, divide your gross salary by 4, and spend that on a great used car. Drive the heck out of it! Meanwhile, double down on your contribution to your local food bank, and sponser a child or two overseas, and contribute smartly to your 401k, 457 or IRA. You'll be golden.

Not in red, but yes. I could see myself owning one. Maybe black. Yes. Black.

I'd see an advertising creative director driving this car. Considering I'm graduating next semester with my degree in advertising in the creative sequence, to answer your question: yes.
That said, although I could see myself in this car I'd far more likely see myself waiting a year or two more and getting a used GT-R or Z06.

Looks like you've got quite a few "classics" on your street. Besides the truck, is that a mint Reliant and Expo LRV?

The car... absolutely. Absolutely not red though. Way too attention-whorish for my tastes.

Not even for a split second could I imagine that. Not with my own money anyway; if someone gave me one, I'd keep it a weekend (so's not to appear ungrateful), then sell it.

If it all plays out, I would be 30 and I would get one in Sprint Blue (supercharged 3.0 with 6MT). Oh, I'm an IT systems administrator :)

I'd take one in dark grey. I'm just not sure I'd be willing to spend the extra $$ on the S5 over the A5 though.

I could imagine myself in one if it was a "S5" with a MT....and if the wait was not 6 months (like it was when I was in the market for a sports coupe). Anyway I went with a 43k BMW instead....Satellite Engineer, 35, single w/1 child....

I could. Being single with no kids this would be my choice car if the G37S didn't exist.

I agree completely and have had that same equation in my head for years!

@ slickersdrip: I AM an advertising creative director. if you're really good, you could be there in 10 years or so. It's not gonna happen sooner, and you'll never make enough to afford the maintenance on the GTR...

Well the A5 2.0 TFSI starts at $36K so pricing is not too bad (and there were certainly complaints about getting it too cheap:-)). Close enough in looks to the more expensive S5.
I don't know if the question is about color red or the car itself but I've seen all kind of people driving an A5/S5. The design is also pretty conservative so it's not that only certain people like it.

Maybe in another color.

My neighbor purchased one of these, and in person I find it much more attractive. Truly, I want to believe Audi can build a reliable car in the 4/5 series. I just keep thinking of several Audi owners who caution me, as well as my mechanic. But then I think: why in the heck WOULDN'T my mechanic jump at the chance to bill me for a $1,000 brake job?!
For now, I'm quite pleased with an admittedly less glamorous G35. But I'll be watching how these beauties hold up...
