Going Mobile

iphone_717.jpg

As you've probably seen me mention before, we are working on a new mobile version of Inside Line so we can entertain and inform you while you are on the train, the bus, at work, during class, and all of the other important times of day.

I'm curious as to what type of content you like to access on your mobile devices? Full articles? Blogs? News headlines? Pictures? Video?

What do you do with your mobile?

Mobile version of all blogs (esp LT Blog)
Mobile version of IL Reviews

Most of all, the site should auto recognize full featured mobile browsers on phones such as Android, Iphone, Pre (ie, no WAP version.) Do it similar to the Autoblog wesite.

I agree. Using my iPhone, I visit the same sites I visit with my laptop - LT, Straightline, AutoObserver, Karl on Cars, and Edmunds Daily. Currently, I bypass the mobile version and go to the full site. If you do an updated version, please don't strip out content for the sake of screen size. Rearrange, sure, but don't leave out content!

How bout an app to steer the car of the week, like in those iphone video games? :D

I personally would enjoy any content you could put on the mobile site. I have really started heavily using mobile site to check info while I'm out and about during the day, or bored in class.

Whatever it is please make it a mobil site and not an iPhone app as I'm sure that many readers, like myself, carry competing smart phones.

Frankly, accept for the Flash based parts, I don't have problems accessing the regular site on my Palm Pre.

Honestly, the site currently works fine on my iPhone. I hate if I'm trying to visit the site via google and I get redirected to your mobile site. I especially hate how a lot of Mobile Wordpress sites won't let me pinch to zoom in on the picture.

It's more trouble than it is worth guys.

I don't care for videos, but I think the blog content is the most important to include. Basically the LT blog and Straightline, because the other blogs are essentially dead.

I will probably visit the mobile site instead of the main site. Keep the content, ditch the gigantic filler images/flash/empty space.

First of all, thanks for doing this!! It's been a real bummer since the site redesign to have to stop using my phone to read it.

I agree with the others, I want it all, but most especially LT, Straightline, and News. I can live without the main articles but would like it if you could do those too. Probably all the same engine driving the content, right?

Try to make smaller images to account for usually slower download speeds. Trim all the Flash from the mobile site, as many phones do not yet support it.

Thanks again, IL! I can't wait. :)

Also, in a related note, it'd be great to have a mobile version of Edmunds that makes researching new cars streamlined. We could then use it while on the dealership lot as a research and negotiating tool. You could even make it in App version (iPhone and Android, please).

Well since i just got a new mytouch 3g i can just look at the full site but i since there is no Flash player for the android market yet i cant see everything. So maybe a mobile site where i could see everything would be great or if Flash would come to the android market i'll just stick to the full site.

Since I don't have a super smart phone, I like the mobile sites that reduce the java and flash stuff down to words worth reading. How about recent reviews of vehicles, and an easy way to review new and used cars. Perhaps on the new and used car pages you could have links to the longer reviews that have taken place on that car. (so if I was buying a 370Z, there'd be a link on the 370Z's little page that takes me to the longer reviews done by IL in the past so I can read them too).

@felonious,

Edmunds actually already has a mobile site at m.edmunds.com

You can read more about it here: http://www.edmunds.com/help/about/mobile.html

Let us know what you think.

Just make sure I can opt out of the mobile site. I can see pretty much everything I want on the regular site with my iphone and mobile sites always feel like a straightjacket. Do _not_ force me into the mobile site based upon a browser read on your part. Or at least give me a entry screen with a choice of mobile or regular site.

Can you tell that I hate getting diverted to a mobile site?

Hey Josh, thanks for that tip! The site looks great on my dumb phone (LG Dare). Bookmarked!

I have an LG enV Touch and I use the internet for email, Facebook, etc. I also use the WiFi on my iPod touch whenever I'm on CSU's campus because the internet is faster.

I'd love to see a version of all blogs (esp. this one) that is a lot easier to manipulate, as accessing this even on the iPod (who's browser is identical to the iPhone) is kind of a chore.

I'd also love to see road tests, comparison tests, and features section as well.

everything would be nice, but if we cant have it all, regular articles and reviews, news, and the blogs are the most important to me. oh and pictures of course!

+1 to Church's comment. I don't mind an auto direct to the mobile site, but I want the option to go to the regular one. my Pre renders everything but the Flash parts just fine, and sometime in Q1 2010 I should get flash too, so the simplified mobile site isn't necessary for me.

misterfusion says:

Looks like a high concentration of Pre owners on this blog. Great minds think alike. ;)

I would like as much content as possible from the blogs, although I can live without video. However, I also agree with the person who suggested a mobile/smartphone Edmunds car shopping tool. If it's an app, then is it too much to ask that you make a webOS version...?

marcvill says:

Keep everything the regular site does but smaller...like the old website. No ads maybe?

A comment for the regular site...For pete's sake, please, please cut down on the amount of white space. My mouse wheel gets a work out every time I am on the blogs.

Give me everything, but please ensure that you optimize it for the Palm Pre. AWESOME BLOG - one of my favorites.
