Once you shut off the engine on a warm day, the fan kicks in to cool the radiator with an enthusiasm I haven't heard since the last century. It sounds like you're standing next to a Grumman F6F Hellcat winding up for a takeoff from an aircraft carrier, like some kind of ultimate hi-def promo for the Military Channel.

I would love to hear an audio clip or video please.

I had a '97 Triumph T509 Speed Triple (motorcycle) that did that, too, though it sounded more like a large remote-controlled airplane than a Hellcat. It also was a pretty good drain on the battery since it would run for some time. I'll be interested to see if you have the same issues with the XC60.

Didn't the old Dodge K Cars have a fan that would run after shutting the car off? They'll probably have marketing call it new technology...

My 1976 VW Rabbit did that too. I've never heard a Hellcat, but it was loud enough that people would ask if we left the car running.

Welcome to modern Volvos. My '07 S60 2.5T does the same thing, and my other half's '06 S60 R (traded in a couple of years ago) did it as well. We also looked at a used '07 C70 (2.5T) on Saturday, and guess what? It did it as well. Looking under the hood of my S60, Volvo uses one G I A N T electric fan rather than two smaller ones like most manufacturers. When it spins up for either engine or AC cooling, it is impressively loud and reminds me of the Navy LCACs (hovercrafts). And guess what? It does it while you're driving too, especially when you're sitting at lights. You just can't hear it from inside the vehicle, even with the windows open.
The S60 also runs the interior HVAC fan after the car has been sitting off for at least 30 minutes, to dry the ducts if you've been using the AC at all. That fan will run for at least 20 minutes. With that and the massive cooling fan under the hood, I've never had a battery problem.

My 2000 Jetta VR6 did that. People would ask if I left the car on all the time.

I remember being scared of my Dad's '84 Escort wagon when it did that when I was a little kid. I always imagined it was about to blow up for some reason.

I didn't know that modern cars still did that. It was the mid eighties when I last heard a car (neighbor's Plymouth Horizon) run the fan after the engine was shut off. Can you guys get an explanation from Volvo why it does this? If the engine was at normal operating temperatures like all other cars then there should be no reason to run the fan after shut down. This would make sense if the coolant temp was way above normal and it needed additional air circulation to cool down.
