2010 Chevy Camaro vs 2010 Pontiac G8: Face-Off What If?

G8 GT versus Camaro Smokey Burnout Edition

Just for fun, let's imagine that Pontiac hasn't joined Oldsmobile and Geo in the great GM brand graveyard (located amongst a block of abandoned buildings in Detroit).

With that assumption, which would you buy: the 2010 Pontiac G8 GT or the 2010 Chevy Camaro SS? Both are from the same platform from Down Under, both have V8s, both are rear drive, both are General Motors products, both have switchblade flip keys, both are built in former British colonies not of the Original 13 variety. Am I missing anything?

If this were a Face-Off, which car would you pick? Click through to see what my selection would be.

For me, I'd pick the G8 GT. I can see out of the thing and place the front end better, I can put people in the giant back seat and it still looks pretty damn cool. I love the ride and handling balance, power delivery is excellent and the entire car just feels "right" to drive. Oh yeah, the steering wheel fits human hands and I don't look like a pratt driving it. On the downside, I'm not a fan of the interior controls, which were designed by some dude in the Outback after a few too many Foster's.

And sure, the G8 GXP makes power more on-par with the Camaro, but it's only 0.2 seconds quicker from zero to 60 than the GT. Also, it may have a manual, but I could live with the auto in a car like this.

Finally, the G8 is cheaper when similarly equipped to the Camaro. You get a few additional niceties, but I don't think they are worth the extra cost. Besides, I certainly don't find the Camaro more fun to drive and I can live with a car that is only 0.4 seconds slower from 0-60. The Camaro seems more like a fashion accessory. The G8 is actually useful and ultimately far cooler by being subtle.

G8, I have only driven a V6 model, but I prefer the comfort and styling to the Camaro.

What happened to the post about the "broken" G8 fuel gauge? Did someone realize that it was the temp gauge and was too embarrassed to let it stand? Tis, tis if that was the case.

G8, no question. Better looking (IMHO), better dash, almost as fast, far more practical.

Camaro...You can only get two pedals in the G8 (and I assume we're not talking about the GXP).

jeepsrt, were there no V8s on the lot?

For me it isn't a contest. G8 GT all the way, and if it is available, I would certainly have to try the GXP, but I would probably still end up with the GT.

James, Foster's is no more Australian than saying 'shrimp on the barbie'. Foster's is Canadian owned. And Aussies don't say shrimp. They say prawns.

Also, I want my stupid stupid stupid post about the 'fuel gauge' back! That was brilliant!

gregnv says:

Who cares what Aussies call shrimp or if Fosters we get in America is brewed in Canada. So long as Aussies have great beaches, drink beer from oilcans and make cars like this, I'll be jealous. I can only hope that GM begins importing v8 Holden's again in the future.

I'd get the G8. 4 doors beats two doors and the car is just as fun to drive. If only it had a manual. That would be the only sticking point, but I think I'd sacrifice. The other practicalities of the G8 out weigh my need for a manual.

ya - where is the fuel gauge post?? It thought it odd that it showed the temp guage and not the fuel gauge.

jriz says:

While I realize that Foster's is swill and nobody actually drinks it in Australia, had I written "after a few too many Dungaridgeradoo's" or whatever they actually drink there, no one would've known what I was talking about.

bankerdanny says:

If you want to try a 'real' Australian beer, I highly recommend Coopers. Their Extra Stout absolutely kicks Guiness's ass.

htr_hardtech says:

G8, its nice to stuff people in the back seat, and the tad bit slower is worth it. Plus it does get better MPG on top of it...

Yeah I commented on the fuel thing as well, I just assumed they used a stock photo they had around. If it was the temp guage then wow.

HAHA! @ Jriz

"after a few too many Dungaridgeradoo's"

Reminds me of the Simpson's episode when Bart sneaks a bullfrog into the Australia and destroys the ecosystem.

G8 GT...its better finished on the inside (not saying much though), has a huge back seat, costs less, you can actually see out of it, it looks great, and at 6'3" i can actually fit in one (plus a sunroof)!

Sign me up for a G8.

I actually considered holding off my purchase of a G8 GT and waiting for the Camaro. I remember talking to the salesman an mentioning this fact, and saw the grimance in his face, even though this was a Chevy, Pontiac, Buick store.

Hindsight, I would make the same decision. I work out of my car and need the room, and you can see out of the car. On the highway, it is very difficult to keep your foot out of it and watch cars go by, but it is fun to scare Prius owners!

Plus the fact they were discounting G8 GT's and purchased mine for just slightly more than a Camry, Accord, Malibu, or Fusion would cost was just icing on the cake. If I did get a Camaro, I would have likely gotten the 6 cylinder, but one equipped like I would want would cost the same or more than the G8 GT. Now if I could have gotten a Camaro convertible, and my wife could drive a manual, well that's a different blog.

Do I *have* to pick one? There is not one single GM model I would consider for my next vehicle.

Oh, alright. If they were giving them away for free.... G8.

If forced to drive a Gubmint Motors product my choice would be the G8, no question- since the UAW didn't build it.

scottyscooter says:

G8, no contest.

These were actually the two cars I was deciding against. The G8 is a well rounded performance sedan that just does everything excellent.

As others have said, the Camaro has poor visibility and a crappy interior. To me, the Camaro is just about being stylish and the end product really suffered in a lot of areas because of this.

Even if I didn't have to fit an enormous baby seat in the back, or the wife could drive a stick shift, or the G8 GT wasn't thousands cheaper than the Camaro, I'd still pick the Pontiac.

Practical yet still a load of fun to drive, whether it's a quick blast to the grocery store or a 3 hour highway trip. Try saying that about a Camry or Accord.

I've bought the Camaro SS over the G8 GT and never looked back.

It has been a long process and not easy as easy one.
At the time when the Camaro was coming to market, Pontiac was been killed and gave big discounts on the G8 GT.

I got a price quote for $32,000CDN for a G8GT MRSP at $40,025CDN and still manage to refuse that $8,000 disocunt offer!! WHY you ask? well the answer is because it's a SEDAN. I own a SEDAN and no matter how perfermant the car will be it's still a 4 door saloon in Orange color...

Now, After waiting to get better pricing on the Camaro, I was able to get $2000 of a $38,000CDN MRSP CAMARO SS.

SO...What do I get for $4000.00 more? A Sport Car, event better a Super Sport Car! it's better in every performance aspects over the G8 GT. Looks that even a short skirt with high heels walking in a Marine base camp won'T get!!

We can argue till next year about the seats, the sterring, the automatic vs the stick....etc. Both are great cars.

But at the end the only questions you should ask yourself is: What do I need and want?
A Sedan for compromise or a Sport Car for performance?

My answer was: It has been 12 years of compromises, it's time to kick Ass and rejoyce my everyday driving.

G8 hands down. The novelty of the odd interior in the Camaro would wear out eventually for me, whereas I've put over 25,000 miles in my G8 GT and still love sitting in it and driving the car. I don't need the third pedal (nice to have, but not necessary).

I also need the room in the back and the visibility is excellent compared to the Camaro. Plus, I have no need to call attention to myself when I'm cruising on the freeway anyway.

"The novelty of the odd interior in the Camaro would wear out eventually for me"

That's exactly what's wrong with the interior of the current Mini; it's just too clever by half.

z71456 says:

02:22 PM, 01/12/10

Camaro!!!! The G8 is really nice, but a completely different car. 4 door V8 sedan vs. 2 door retro sports/muscle car. Why don't you create another "Face-Off" on two other like cars like perhaps the Honda Element vs. ummm....a Mini Cooper because those are just about as similar to each other as the two vehicles mentioned above.

I really don't see how the Camaro interior is a "novelty" or the car itself is a "fashion accessory." Those are the most ridiculous statements I've ever heard. GM did a great job designing this car both inside and out. I love the interior and exterior styling of this car.
