2009 Nissan GT-R: Bidding for Our Car on eBay

rear left.jpg

I've been writing about selling our 2009 Nissan GT-R and predictably getting responses from readers who say they would never touch our car, even with someone else's 10 foot pole. But recently I got this opinion from one of our readers.

MN_Car_Enthus wrote, "Why don't you just put it no-reserve on EBAY and let er rip? Seeing how it would trade in this economy would be the most interesting aspect to this LT test by far. No offense.

"I'm confident you'll do better than $60k. Everyone seems to think that simply because this is an Edmund's LT Test Car it should trade at a discount to a car with comparable mileage. You never took it for a hard track (in fact your tires corded recently from a lack of "spirited" driving ), it has 100% documented history and has been treated well. I don't get it........................?"

Well, it is listed on eBay and bidding has been encouraging.

After only three days on the market, there have been 28 bids, and the top offer is now $47,000.  The reserve price has not yet been met but the bidders are getting close. Anyone who has been following the sales process knows what we were offered by Carmax and that will give you a clue as to the reserve price.

Take a look at our eBay auction and as the savvy shoppers often say, "bid with confidence."

Whoa.....someone took my advice? Wonders never ceased to exist. Good luck.

I predict just over $60k but we'll see.

In today's economy, good luck with selling it, really!
The problem facing any prospective buyer will be securing financing, so be sure to check the authenticity of any cashier's check etc.
One advantage a retailer (i.e. Nissan dealer etc.) would have, is that they've got many sources available with regards to finding a buyer a finance source. Plus, they could also certify the vehicle as part of their CPO program, possibly?
Bottom line: I'll bet you end up back at CarMax, so you better hurry, because their original offer's only good for seven days!

Cool way to end the test; good luck.

@charlesncharge,

http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/03/03/americas-car-mart-beats-the-recession/

Who would buy a car in this economy? Plenty of people. Used car sales are up. Why buy new when you can take advantage of someone else's inability to budget, and pick their car up on the cheap when they can no longer pay the note?

Is it just me or are the repairs not in the History Report listed on Ebay? This vehicle's nasty history should be a deterrent to bidders. Are these history reports really that unreliable? All the repairs were done at the dealer.

MN_Car_Enthus - almost. They do have a reserve. But this is a good idea.

I love the bid history where one person bid $200 and then 20 seconds later decided to up it to $202.50. That's the way to drive out the competition.

You left out all the good pics in your listing, like the ones here: http://blogs.insideline.com/roadtests/2008/09/2009-nissan-gt-r-gutless.html

I notice the eBay listing doesn't contain any links back to the IL blog entries on the car. . . I suppose any interested buyers will know to ask questions and do some research on their own.

I love the e-bay test! Let the market speak!

@lj182: so very true...

I see Edmunds did not go with the 'no reserve' idea.

zcalvert says:

as i thought about this more, i sincerely hope the eventual buyer does his/her homework... no mention of the transmission issues, gas tank issues, track testing, or countless hard launches by many different drivers.

mr. reed seems to be annoyed by those of us who say we wouldn't go near this car, but i just can't imagine purchasing a used car with the (well)documented history this one has.
sorry, but "bid with confidence" sounds just a little disingenuous in this context.

For those of us who weren't closely following the GT-R sale process, what did CarMax offer?

kingfish4 says:

I just noticed that from the rear it looks like a Cobalt SS. I'd rather have the Cobalt SS and the $35K savings!

When looking at the e bay pics I was reminded how truly horrible the GTR looks inside and out. Anything and I mean anything looks better than that thing.

So there is a reserve price..... Too bad, reserve auctions do nothing but depress bidding. Though, I understand that selling THIS car in THIS economy in a no-reserve may be a bit scary.

An '09 Black GTR w/ 3,500 miles on EBAY went to a winning bidder today for $67.6. Maybe better than $60k is a bit optimistic with this bit of info in hand.

@eswalls -

Agreed, there may be plenty of people who'd like to buy an expensive car, but my basic point was it's not quite as easy as it was in the past 12-18 months, due to more stringent credit restrictions/checks etc.

Have you personally tried to purchase a NEW car recently ($30-$40K range)? I have, and believe me when I tell you, times have changed, that's for sure! It's equivalent to what buying a house was like a few years back.

Furthermore, anyone with $50K burning a whole in their pocket, would definitely have money to burn to purchase IL's GT-R outright. Also, I believe there's brand-new cars out there in the $50k price range, with heavily subsidized APR offers, so please be sure to compare overall finance charges in this particular scenario.

For example, brand-new M3 sedan for maybe 0.9% APR for 60 months, including factory scheduled maintenance vs. a tired, old GT-R, at whatever the current rates for used cars are + ALL maintenance is on the GT-R owner (big $$$ as we've all discovered). I'd say there's still a lot more depreciation left to go, until used GT-R ownership makes sense.

By all means, best of luck to the GT-R's new owner (which I still say will end up being CarMax).

Should've taken Carmax's first offer. You'll have to get it re-appraised since it's been over a week. They aren't gonna offer you the same $50k again.

After reading how the 750i is being treated (2 threads after this one) and knowing the problems you experienced with the GT-R I would defintely take a pass on this car.

dg0472 says:

So how much extra are you expecting from the "Historic" designation?

texases says:

07:30 AM, 11/10/09

"Historic", as in it required the most parts replaced of any car in IL's history!

Also-seems like bidding's stopped for now, guess we'll need to check back in on the last day.

kingkhalas says:

great idea selling it on ebay.

bradyholt says:

09:39 AM, 11/10/09

It's already past the CarMax offer almost a week to go. They made the right call.

texases says:

10:27 AM, 11/10/09

^^? Just went over $50k an hour ago. What do they pay Ebay when it sell?

texases says:

10:56 AM, 11/10/09

Nevermind, from what I can tell its about $120 for a successful Ebay sale. Pretty cheap! So any increase from now on is money in IL's pocket.

Why are you selling it, what ever happened to you guys comparing this to Project Evo??

dubaizen says:
