This is what the cockpit of the 2009 Infiniti FX50 looks like when you hit the ignition button too lightly for not long enough and then walk away with the key in your hand and lock the door, thinking you've shut down the V8 and left the lights to automatically extinguish themselves. Only to find that you've left the engine still running.
Which I've done in our noisy parking garage.
Twice.

Is the FX really that quiet?
It seems like the consenus is that the FX is a great car, just rather ugly..a lot like the new Acura TL.

The FX idles quietly enough -- with a nice burble-y undertone to set the mood. But the 2-foot diameter McMaster-Carr exhaust fan that ventilates the nearby hydraulics room for the elevator is an eardrum's worst nightmare.

you mean 2 yard diameter. my room floor fan is 2 feet diameter.
that's a nice car.

I would have thought the car would honk its horn if it the motor was still running and the car sensed that the key was not in proximity to the car. Is that too much common sense for programmers?

It beeps several times when the engine is running and the key is outside the vehicle....

I would think that maybe something could be designed into the car to auto shutoff after a couple of minutes of running with out the key fob present. If the vehicle is in park and you walk away from the car with it running for some reason with the fob with you, I see no reason why it couldn't be programmed to shut down.

Even though this has never happened to me, it has happened TWICE to my bro-in-law who borrowed my fx50. An auto turn-off feature, like the_big_al mentioned would be great, but for some reason even my friends Lexus IS doesnt have such a feature, so I am guessing all cars with keyless start dont have such a feature.

Maybe in the future they'll design some kind of mechanical device you have to insert into the dash to start the car then pull out to turn it off. It would definitely solve the fussy fob problems.

Manufacturers, take note.

Great. If you forget to turn it off while getting out on a busy street to quickly grab a cup of coffee, some dude will just drive off with it. These things cause so much headache for valet parking. Not a big fan of keyless start as I don't like having anything in my pocket when I'm driving.

That dial on the left.
When it points to ZERO, means the engine's stopped

. . . or that the gauge is broken.
How can a bunch of people getting paid to write about cars not bother to check the dial after the car was left on once?
