2009 Ford Flex: I Don't Want to See It Go

flex on the open prairie

Our Flex is very close to hitting the 40,000 mile mark, which has to mean that it will be leaving us soon. As Brent said a while back, this has to be a record for the long-term program. I like the Flex a lot. I'm always happy to take it when it's available, especially when I have more than just my family of 3 to transport.

I keep asking out loud to no one in particular, "Can't we just keep it?" No one has answered me yet. What do you think; would you want us to keep it forever?

Why do you guys like the Flex so much compared to say the CX-9? I mean it is a pretty good crossover but in comparison they are both very similar.

How about a 100,000 mile long term test?

ocramida says:

Yeah I say keep it and really see how well it holds up over another 40 to 50,000 miles. I mean it's a practical vehicle, so there is a reason to keep it beyond the LT cycle. It would be a great way of showcasing how well a Ford has improved. I'm serious. I'd read about it.

+1 Ocramida

You guys are responsible for the Flex going on my short list. i am not a Ford guy at all but because of you, I have actually been to a dealership and started my search. Keep up the good work of finding the vehicle that I would never consider but should. Cheers.

keep it!!!

vt8919 says:

Keep it. I, too, want to see the mileage hit six digits.

As a reader, I would rather you replaced it with a new car. Perhaps you will like its replacement just as much. I already know that the Flex is a great car. Now it's time to learn about a new car.

New Car,
Ford Fiesta when it arrives

I'd gleefully read about this brilliant vehicle for a billion more miles.

+2 Ocramida

100,000 miles is a common length of time people keep a car and it would interesting to see that long of a test. I still haven't grown fond of the looks but I can't deny it's a good practical wagon/ van/ thingy.

bravesfan says:

I also would like to see you keep this car for at least another year. Actually, these days i think your usual 1 year/20,000 miles is too short to get a good evaluation of a car's reliability.

hybris says:

As much as I would love to have the Flex stay there are others that need to done *cough*SHO*cough*.

Nonetheless if I ever need something from the crossover class the Flex is going to be high on my list.

i think y'all should keep the Flex till 100,000 miles. lets see how itll last at the 100,000 mile mark.

huyracing says:

09:16 PM, 11/24/09

get an EcoBoost Flex...

jackson611 says:

09:53 PM, 11/24/09

screw the flex and get the new Bentley Mulsanne. you'll like it better than any other car you have tested and it will be loads better than the 7 series.

sreed1 says:

I would like to see you keep it for another year. I think it would make for interesting reaading. Now how about adding a Fusion Hybrid or Taurus Sho to the fleet? That would be great also. The Fusion seems to get ignored around these parts. Motor Trend has named it car of the year so now it must be time for Edmunds to take notice of it?

brn says:

06:59 AM, 11/25/09

Just get a regular Taurus. The first have if it's stay, you'll rip on it for silly subjective reasons. The second half of it's stay, it'll grow on you and you'll not want to give it up.

nomercy346 says:

I definitely wouldn't mind reading about a higher mileage car in the fleet. why stop at 100k? keep it forever to see how long it's drivetrain lasts.

bodyblue says:

08:24 AM, 11/25/09

Keep IT!!!!!!!!!!! So far it really has been the best LT car you have ever had.....why not REALLY test it and run it to 100,000???? You really need more Fords anyway.......you are down to one and that is silly considering the amount of Fords sold in the US every year. Or how about telling us what really happened to the Edge? There is some reason nobody will talk about it and several of us want to know what it is.

par_avion says:

08:25 AM, 11/25/09

If you love it so much buy one!

mozzz77788 says:

08:31 AM, 11/25/09

we will :)

dbt says:

08:49 AM, 11/25/09

Keep it a while longer, and then do a test with the redesigned 2011 Toyota Sienna (available probably February or march 2010) & 2011 Honda Odyssey (available Sept / Oct 2010).

CaptainChaos says:

08:52 AM, 11/25/09

I like the prospect of getting a new, better LT vehicle, however I really do like the Flex despite the fact that any sort of Van, Crossover, etc is explicitly against my religion

sreed1 says:

10:03 AM, 11/25/09

I was wondering what happened to the Edge also. Last post was in May? It is such a popular vehicle with the public as I see lot's of them on the road. Why is it so unpopular with Edmunds? Maybe it was in an accident. C'mon! Tell the tale...... We are waiting.

bodyblue says:

10:19 AM, 11/25/09

I think they are hiding something about the Edge.....I usually dont think that way but the total silence about it is really strange. Come on Dan....tell us the dirty secret!

felonious says:

10:21 AM, 11/25/09

As I've posted before, my next car will be a Flex because of this long-term test. With that said, I think you should let it go, if only because you will never choose any other LT cars for long road trips! Try to replace it with a direct competitor to see if the Flex really is the road-trip king.

I still wish Ford would make a diesel Flex for me. If they make it after I buy a gas-powered one, I'm going to be so mad! :)

greenpony says:

10:41 AM, 11/25/09

You can keep the status quo and replace it, as you do will all your LT cars. Or you can blaze a new trail and keep it (maybe modify it like the Mustang? Haha).

Either way, I'll keep coming to this site.

01rangerdriver says:

11:01 AM, 11/25/09

Hmm, keeping it would be pretty interesting. Especially if you keep it to the 100K mark. Otherwise, if it gets replaced, replace it with another Ford. Taurus SHO perhaps? Or a Fusion. Test how well the Car of the Year performs!

hybris says:

11:17 AM, 11/25/09

With the Edge I think it got stolen hence the dead silence because of a pending court case.

frazier500 says:

12:42 PM, 11/25/09

The Edge, Prius, and Lexus RX400h have all joined each other in the Edmund's LT black hole.

vt8919 says:

03:25 PM, 11/25/09

I want an update on the 2004 Prius, too, but they have not given me a reply. They have had it for I'm assuming 2004. Six years multiplied by 15,000 miles on average and I bet it has 90,000 miles on it by now.

brn says:

06:09 PM, 11/25/09

They had a Prius? Maybe that was stolen too.

hunter312 says:

07:04 PM, 11/25/09

I have a compromise:

Replace the Ford Flex with the new Ford Taurus SHO and then run THAT car up to 100,000 miles instead.

daskiing1 says:

07:21 PM, 11/25/09

keep it to 100,000 miles. See if Ford's reliability claims hold up.

bmw335xi says:

12:47 PM, 11/28/09

I would love to see a high millage test. it would be sad to see the ol girl go. Or get an ecoboost flex

hondacura4 says:

07:13 PM, 11/28/09

I say keep it also!
