2009 Audi S5: The Sound Clip You Asked For, Maybe

car-of-the-week-717-2.jpg 2009_audi_s5_nightvision.jpg

You asked for an audio clip of our 2009 Audi S5 "idling, revving, accelerating away, driving past at WOT."

Alas, our crack video team had a prior engagement, so we bring you this video (after the jump, man, after the jump) with yours truly in the cockpit and my colleague, Loren Wong (subytrojan) doing the camera work. This would be the "accelerating away" clip, and it was recorded on a closed course.

In addition to this video (and it's after the jump, remember), you could always go back and watch the original, professionally-shot track video of our S5.

Mmm, sounds mellow and smooth, but powerful. I like.

Ummm, it sounds really not good. Maybe it is the camera.

Too thoroughly muted, though the basics are there. Maybe a nice high-quality aftermarket exhaust system would give it some richness without going out of character.

for some reason, that doesn't sound as good as I thought it would. I feel like an older S4/RS4 sounds better. the track test video doesn't make it sound too much better to me either... the S5 doesn't seem to have the same "bellowing" quality that I expected. might just be me, I dunno.

mmmm V8....

The RS4 definitely sounds meaner in person, but the S5 holds its own. I like it.

I've always thought that Audi's 4.2 was the best-sounding V-8 I'd ever heard. It seems to blend equal parts of Euro-smoothness and 'Murrican V-8 bad-assness. S5 sounds sweet, indeed.

However, comma, one day I was outside a dealership as first an S5, then a (C5) RS 6 accelerated out of the parking lot. Good as the S5 sounded, the RS 6's sound put it to shame, even with 2 turbos muting the 450hp goodness....
