2008 Pontiac G8 GT: Resetting Average Fuel Economy

Economy 005 1600.jpg

On my way in this morning, I decided to see what sort of fuel economy was possible cruising at 70 mph. The running average had been hanging around 18 mpg no matter how I drove the car, so I reset the Avg Fuel calculator to see how frugal the G8 could be. I saw 24 mpg before I pulled into the gas station and let the car idle while I snapped the photos. Pretty darned good for a big ol' 'merican V8. So I scrolled back to the odometer/trip screen only to find that it too had been reset. Noooooo! Now I'd have to subtract previous from current odometer readings to get an accurate trip reading. Why does resetting the average speed/average fuel economy also reset the trip meter (which is ridiculous to include hundredths of a mile, by the way)?

So its easier to calculate as now u know exactly how many miles u have traveled with the new fuel economy avg. If the avg driver resets it at the gas station, then they are making things easier to calculate. Thats my guess.

Is it not time to get rid of the G8? What perpose does it serve to keep it in the fleet? If you bought it then get rid of it and buy a Forte or a Fusion or a Soul or anything still in production. There is just no point anymore.

Hey blue, it has the same "perpose" as any other car in the fleet, to let the IL crew live with it for however long they want. It is very well liked, and for some reason it hasn't been sold yet. Probably because it is well liked.

Oops on the typo!

a Forte, Fusion, or Soul? If it's between a G8 GT with 30k miles or those 3 cars, it's easy to see why they haven't gotten rid of it yet.

Not everybody can afford or want to spend $30,000 on a car. It would be nice to see them test more cars in that price range. I am sure they will continue to test $60,000 vanity mirrors for those you want them. Sorry if the little people bother you.

I got 26.2 MPG on my recent trip from NW Arkansas to New York City. Its fun filling up a car and having the miles till empty be over 500+.

Hold down the enter button when starting to the car to enter engineering mode, there you can get up to the second fuel milage and a bunch of other useless stuff like you can see when active fuel management is running.

bodyblue,

Well seeing how my purchase price of my loaded g8 did not go above 30, it say its fairly a good deal. Seeing how the g8 sedan can be had for ~20k new...

G8 can be a very eco car. Grated yes a Chevy Aveo could be had with no options including no A/C for about half that. Then your just driving a car to get from point a to point b. And to be honest no person just getting a car for that would care.

I know a fried that wont spend more than $500 for a car, as he says it "the weight of the steel is not worth much more than $500 so why should I pay more than that?".

Seeing the price of the g8 be sub 20 used now, give it a few years and it will be in the low teens. Maybe not for the GT though.

What gets me is that the trip counter resets every time the tank is filled. And there is only the one trip counter. I can't recall ever driving a vehicle with a digital odometer that didn't have two trip counters, even my motorcycle has two.

I just got a lightly used (1200 miles) 08' G8 GT about a month ago and I love it. I traded my 2009 Mazda RX8 R3 in for it because the level acceleration was lacking in that car. The RX8 wasn’t a bad car; it was just that I personally found the level of performance to not be adequate to justify the reliability concerns of the RX8 or the normal shortcomings you have with owning a sports car.

All I was expecting was to get a well rounded family sedan that had enough power to keep things entertaining enough that I wouldn’t feel like I was driving a point A to B appliance. Those expectations were blown away; I think that this is the best car I have ever owned. If I were IL, I would probably never sell the G8.

And to get back on topic; I also dislike the fact that resetting the fuel economy reading also resets the trip odometer. I'm not sure why it does that

On my BMW, I had to reset both separately, which I did every time I got gas. I like the fact that I only have to hit reset once on my G8 GT as I'm leaving the gas station.

Oh and for the record, my car was a steal. Brand new (6 miles), loaded '09 G8 GT (Sport Pkg, Premium Pkg, Sunroof) - $26.1K+TTL.

From the owner’s manual:

“The Trip Odometer display shows
the current distance traveled since
the last reset for the trip odometer.
The trip odometer can be reset to
zero by pressing and holding 8 [ = reset ]
while the trip odometer value is
highlighted. If 8 is only pressed
briefly, the Avg Speed/Avg Fuel
will be reset as well.”

“To reset only the Avg Speed or Avg
Fuel, press and hold 8 while either
value is highlighted. If 8 is only
pressed briefly, the Trip Odometer
will be reset as well.”
