2008 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution GSR: Lumpy Idle

Since having its cams swapped, our Evo has enjoyed a power peak near 8,000 rpm. And a lumpy idle. We like them both. The idle is difficult to fully capture with any video, but here's how it sounds and how it looks on the tachometer.

Hoe high can the Evo rev with stock internals?

Sorry to all of you 4 banger lovers out there but that things sounds like crap. I am sure it hauls butt and is a blast to drive but 4s just can never sound as good as a V6 or V8........but dont feel bad V10s sound like crap also.

I rev my stock cam/block EVO X to 8000 rpm regularly with no issues.

The idle doesn't have to be lumpy though. It can be smoothed out.

BTW, did you guys ever fix the compressor surge? We ran into some similar issues - hint, you're probably operating in a load range you didn't see on the dyno during spool, and its probably too lean there. If you head back to RRE, have them tweak the fuel.

I thought the Evo had a V6 in it.

But I have to mostly agree with bodyblue I have yet to hear a 4 sound like anything but a overloaded lawn mower engine.

On the V10 it depends on the engine and what its in.

no matter how lumpy it idles at the end of the day it's a 4. IMO nothing will ever beat the sound of a big cube V8. I6s sound nice, too but I don't like their note coupled with most aftermarket exhaust systems.

Coming from a position where my car had a wonky idle for months thanks to what turned out to be nothing more than a ever so slightly failed throttle body-to-plenum gasket, that kind of sound is both familiar and unpleasant.
