2008 Mitsubishi Evo GSR: Spoolin' Down

IMG_1709.jpgPull Project Evo X into the driveway. Shut 'er down. Gather cell phone, groceries, nunchucks. Exit car. There's a muted not-quite-whirring sound coming from under the hood. What's that about?

It's the GT30R turbo still spooling down. There's so little friction in the guts of the thing -- being ball bearing and all -- that it continues to spin for thirty seconds or more after you switch off the engine.

Turbos are cool.

No turbo timer? A must especially with a car like this where hard driving is more apt to happen.

That is a good looking ricer. I feel dirty for saying that.

@fuhteng
I think you're mistaking ricer for sleeper if it were a ricer then Edmunds would have put all the money they put into the engine and spent it on body kits, stick on vents, massive spoilers etc.

No by defination this is a sleeper.

Still think they need the spoiler.

There is no need for a turbo timer on a modern, dual-cooled turbo. Turbos of the last decade are both oil and water cooled, and therefore don't experience the same oil-coking that killed the bearings/bushings in older, 80's tech turbo applications. The advent of water-cooled turbos removed the requirement for a turbo timer, however, old habits die hard.

Hybris, I think Fuhteng was just being general, as in, "It's brand name ends with a vowel sound and not a consonant, so it's from Japan; aka Teh Land Of Teh Rice"; as opposed to the more modern cultural meaning of a 'ricer' being someone who enjoys using a combination of plastic, vinyl, fiberglass, rubber, and high-grade adhesive to "improve" the "performance" of their ride.

Alas, the latter being a trend that has shown a kudzu-like resilience across all makes and models, regardless of national origin.

definitely a sleeper. Although, anyone that knows what they are looking at will instantly know there is something special about the car because it just has that "look". I think the car looks very cool. Proof that there is no need for ANY body kits or overwrought front fascia's or bulbous rear bumpers with fake exhaust cutouts. Oh and no need for a 3 story tall wing - or for that matter any wing at all. I like the way it looks without a wing. (I can't tell, but did you guys finally fill in the holes left by the wing?)

It looks a little naked without the wing, maybe go for something smaller? Other than that, I wish I had a turbo in my car.

Hmm, with my 80's vintage Sabb 900 Turbo I always let it idle for 30-45 seconds after parking to make sure that the bearings kept getting fed oil while the turbo spun down.

Does the Mitsu have a drip system that feeds oil after the engine was shut down.

huyracing says:

many of the larger aftermarket turbos eliminate the coolant passages, so a turbo timer is still useful. of course, i alway just let it idle for a while... call me cheap, but it works all the same.

You sure it's not just the cooling fan?

Yes.

I think Turbo Timers are a bit silly...under normal driving, they're not necessary. If you have been driving it hard, just let the engine idle for about 30 seconds to a minute before you shut it down. Easy peasy, no need for any additional equipment, just a little common sense.

And that is impressively low friction in the turbo. I hear my GTI's turbo spin down for a couple seconds when I get out of the car but 30 is insane!

breif says:

clark,

If your GTi is still stock, you don't have a ball bearing turbo which is why you don't hear it still spinning. Normal journal bearing turbo's have too much internal friction to spin freely very long.

@breif: I am well aware of that.

I still say remove the rev-limiter and see what this baby will do in the zero-to-sixty.

thats really cool!

this makes me want to save up for a pair of GT3076R's for my 300zx. just to hear that lol.

any chance of a vid?
