After two days of rain, today the sun came out. Seizing the moment, I rolled down the Camaro's very short side glass to enjoy the great outdoors and began my drive to work.
After only a few miles, however, I found myself wanting more. More sun. More wind. More sky. Despite the sunny day and open windows the Camaro's interior still had that dank dungeon feeling thanks to the car's chopped-top-style bodywork and black interior. Remember our car does not have the optional sunroof.
Obviously there's a convertible version of the Camaro coming, but that doesn't really interest me. What I want is a set of T-Tops. I'm with The Mechanic on this one.
Why? I'm not really sure. Maybe it's because I'm from New Jersey. Or maybe it's because I got my driver's license in the 1980's. Or maybe it's because T-Tops rule.
What do you think? Are The Mechanic and I alone on this one?

I think you are The Mechanic.

I think T-Tops are stupid. What's the point really? You loose the structural integrity and don't even get the full open air effect. You could have gotten the Camaro with a moonroof, but then there'd be no headroom. Hopefully a convertible version of the Camaro will be out.

T-tops also leak eventually and cook the bald spot on your head.

You mean mullet. It'll cook the top of your mullet. But your right, if you're talking about the even more rare "bald mullet."

I loved the T-tops on 2002 Trans Am. My favorite feature, besides the engine of course. They did rattle like crazy but didn't leak.

Hey Scott, how much manure can you get in the Camaro?

I would prefer a targa top like the Corvette or Solstice coupe.

Forget the Mechanic - I agree with you though. I love T-tops. And they especially look good on the semi-retro design of the Camaro.
As for the Mechanic, I don't think I can ever forgive him (it?) for that shameful article about the Corvette. It was low and in really bad taste. So as far as I'm concerned, the Mechanic does not exist, and I certainly couldn't care less what he thinks about something.
charlesncharge says:

I also think T-Tops and Targa roofs, are pretty much pointless - get a convertible if that's what you're after.
The only reason archaic vehicles like the Camaro & Mustang even still exist today, is so that old farts like yourself and the Mechanic, can try and relive the days gone by.
I had a chance to drive one of these new Camaros recently, an SS w/auto, that a friend had rented for the weekend, and all I've got to say is: what a sled! I especially liked all the weights that were piled onto the front brake calipers, the rear spoiler that came loose, etc.
Give me a Focus RS any day over one of these glory days-gone by cars of yesteryear; oh wait, I can't actually purchase what I want because it's not available for sale here in the good ol' USA - thanks a lot Ford!
It'd be an interesting comparison test: Ford Focus RS vs. Camaro SS and Mustang GT...

With T-tops, engineers don't have to add structural enhancements that add weight, like on a convert. They really should have a removable corvette-like roof panel though.

Scott is right. T-Tops rule! I loved them in my '87 Trans Am GTA. They did not rattle, and they did not leak (OK, they did leak a little). They even came with removable panels to prevent Mullet-burn from the Texas sun. And the structural rigidity isn't any worse than a convertible.
I loved them so much that I insisted on getting a sunroof on my next car. I thought the sunroof would be nearly as good, but it just does not compare. I rarely bother to open it.
And "bald mullet" isn't a problem for me. "Gray mullet"? Yes. "Bald mullet"? No.

It's oddly appealing to look at on the new Camaro, but I would never choose to pay for a car with T-Tops over a standard coupe.

For all those out there that love T-Tops so much - you should all move to your own special island, we'll call it T-Top Island, where you all can grow out your mullets, and perpetually listen to Bob Seger genre music!
Wait!...I believe that place already exists - it's called Detroit!
Why do you think the Detroit 3 are consistently losing market share today? Is it because their new products are just so great that customers aren't taking notice...or is it because their new products are already yesterday's news?

I've gotta say, my 1982 Z28 had T-tops and I hated them. Too much sun and I wish I had a convertible instead. When I got my 1999 Z28 five years later I made sure it had the slicktop. I still haven't seen very many LS1's with a six speed and a fixed roof and I like it that way.

In my opinion, T-tops look cool but are kind of a pain in the butt to take in and out. A sunroof is a lot easier to deal with. I had no problems with them in my 94 Z28 but I rarely removed them.

Slickersdrip, how did you like that "cross-fire injection?" My 82 Z28 had t-tops, which I loved, but I HATED that motor. Surprisingly, women liked that car a lot.

There are people who think t-tops are cool, and then there are people with above room temperature IQs who've actually experienced them outside of southern California. I'd sooner bring back polio.

Charles, the 911 can be had in Targa form. And Bavaria is not Detroit. And they make some of highest quality cars in the world.
But you wouldn't know anything about that, would you?

Guh, T-tops need to stay dead. Just stick with a sunroof, convertible of hardtop. It's just asking for rattles and possibly leaks.

eswalls and mark_texas,
I believe the term you're searching for is "skullet."

I've got a better idea charlieboy - why don't you move to Japan, Germany, or Korea, since you love their cars so much. You obviously aren't much of an American, and you would do the rest of us a favor by LEAVING.

T-Tops suck. They leak, they rattle, they suck.
My Grand National had them, and I hate them. Then again, I also dislike convertibles and sunroofs. Never open them in cars I have with them.
And if I ever do open them, they seem to stick and require an hour of messing around to get them to work again.

sgude... that engine drank my car decision making process's milkshake. I bought it from one of my dad's female employees for my first car. What a miserable drivetrain in that thing. To make it worse it had the 3 spd automatic, too. When I sold it I swore to never own an automatic transmission again. At the time I really did love the T-Tops, but in retrospect the PITA of putting those glass panels into the trunk in that leatherette pouch just doesn't seem worth it. I'd much rather have a convertible in the future.
But definitely for some reason all of my female friends just adored that car. None of them wanted to buy it from me when I eventually sold it within a few years to get my '99 Z28, though, as I stiffened the frame like no tomorrow and switched to 4:10 gears so my 165 horsepower would really make the most of it while getting putrid MPGs.

I have had 6 camaros and they have all had t-tops. I love them. BRING THEM BACK!!!! I have never had a problem with them and to me, they are no trouble at all. I can't imagine trading off my 2001 camaro for one that does not have t-tops.
