2009 Suzuki SX4: Turn Up Your Volume

As Mark mentioned in an early post, our Suzuki SX4's steering wheel makes a weird robotic sounds when turned.

Here's a video of the steering wheel. It's hard to capture sound on my Flip. Turn up the volume to hear it.

My Mazda3 sounds pretty much the same. It's the electrohydraulic power steering pump in the 3, I don't know if the SX4 has a similar setup or if it's fully electric.

Sounds like one of those video game force feedback wheels!

Sounds perty annoying. My 7 series has an annoying (not as this much though) sound when I try to turn it in full. Not very loud but I am super sensitive to weird noises (like when someone rear ends me) and rattles in the cabin. But I don't hear that in a 5 series.

How do you get rid of that? Will WD-40 help. Not if that's coming from the pump I guess... Well never really liked Sudoku anyway...

I've heard it in person. It sounds like my Logitech MOMO Force steering wheel. :o)

The steering wheel in my 2008 Nissan Versa makes exactly the same noise when the wheel is turned at low speeds (ie. in a parking lot).

You think this s annoying, just wait until your entire car is propelled by an electric motor, not just the power steering.

From the video, its sounds very much like the leather steering wheel wrap is making constant contact with the rubber/plastic of the steering rack hub thing. The SX4's steering is power-assisted yes? Do you know if it is boosted by electrics or hydraulics or both or what?

If it is indeed a more mechanical sound, then it must be something like a Ford truck or SUV or if you are familiar with the first-gen MINI's, when you swing the wheel while that car is not in motion (especially on the MINI, oy vey was that thing odd - seriously direct though). I my experience, Volkswagen really got hydraulic-assisted steering refinement dead-on with the current Jetta/Rabbit.

The current MINI is all electric and frankly never makes a sound - if anything the DI technology makes more noise.
