2009 Mini E: Braking Optional

I know someone already mentioned how quickly our 2009 Mini E stops on its own by just lifting off the throttle but I thought a video demo of it in action would help you see what we mean.

You see it slowing to a stop? That's all without me even touching the brake. And it even stopped at the line. The car feels like it's carrying a really heavy load when you stop like this and when you start from a stop. However, this sure was handy during stop-and-go traffic last night during rush-hour. Although I did worry that the drivers behind me would think that my brakelights didn't work.

When you lift off the "gas" pedal, the brake lights activate.

cwmoo740,
Good to know. Most times I pressed the brakes anyway just to be safe.

Wow! That could be really obnoxious when trying to maintain speeds around town. Does it feel jerky on and off the accelerator?

zoomzoomn,
A little, yeah. It's a little slow off the line, too, when you're still getting accustomed to how much pressure to put on the throttle.

Yeah. I could see where you'd have to get pretty good at lightly modulating tip in around town to maintain speeds smoothly.

The brake lights come on under hard regeneration or quick stops - in other words you can use the regen braking lightly, like engine braking, and the brake lights won't come on so you don't look like a dope riding your brakes all the time.

Lots of people would have a very difficult time adjusting to that.

Whoa, thats pretty crazy. It looks like you pretty much get full normal brakeing force from just taking your foot off the throttle. Thanks for making this video! You definitly have to see it to get an idea as to what its really like.
