2009 Infiniti FX50: Architeuthis

car-of-the-week-717.jpginfiniti_fx50_cotw_717.jpg

It may look like a giant squid, but it's got motor.

Our Infiniti FX50 packs a 390-horsepower 5.0-liter V8, seven-speed automatic transmission with manual mode, and all-wheel drive.

There may be a lot of crossovers on the market today but the 2009 Infiniti FX50 is a high-performance crossover.

It's big. It's bad. It's Car of the Week.

How about "Pangasianodon gigas" or "Goonch"?
It really looks like a catfish to me!

I've had the infinitifx50s for a year now, and never regretted getting it over the x5. More advanced in technology, fast as a beast and reasonably priced than the x5. Moreover, quality has been superb! I couldn't have gotten that with the x5 for sure! I know, I also own a J30 and it's flawless!
And I got it for 58k out the door with a MSRP of 66K with all the options checked!

I just cant warm up to these types of vehicles.

What is the point of this vehicle?

Either get an SUV if you need the storage/space, or get a performance car if you want a dynamic driving experience.

It seems that this car compromises on both and you wind up with a $60,000 vehicle that is mediocre in all respects.

Am I wrong?

It may not have a lot of practicality, but I can't see how a 4500 lb AWD SUV that does 0-60 in 5 secs and provides a high level of driving pleasure can be considered mediocre.

And as for the "point of this vehicle", it only exists as a cheaper alternative to the X5/X6 and Porsche Cayenne.

Godawful ugly, but it runs with the expensive Germans, so I guess it has a point. I'm still impressed by that 0-60 time. Wow.

This thing delivers maximum luxury/performance on the kind of roads real people actually drive on. Beautiful interior with all the latest features, good visibility to see over all the road clogging other cars in front of us, able to manage the crumbling infrastructure and lousy weather most parts of the country experience. Much more comfortable ride and far better handling than a "real" SUV. Carries lots of stuff too. What's pointless for a car we drive every day is track performance. These vehicles make more sense than most luxury vehicles because they're designed for the reality 95% of us live 95% of the time.

All of a sudden I realized why the word 'Fugly' was invented when I saw one of these squirming around the neighborhood. Now I look at it, it does look like a squid, catfish, tadpole, sperm cell, etc...

If I was forced to spend my money on a sporty cross over sperm cell segment, I would rather spend more and get an X6 knowing that wasting money would be the least of my worries at that point.

My favorite FX50 post was when one of the writers demonstrated the extremely limited suspension travel on this vehicle, by trying to do something SUVish with it. Pretty much proved that this is anything but an SUV. It's a sports car, designed to look like an SUV.

I'd link to the article, but the new blog system wont' let me go back far enough.

to me, buying anything more than a corolla or impreza requires some desire to show off. you can't do that in New England -- there are so many Cayennes, even the Turbo S, that the new FX would stand out more. i'd get the X6M for all-out ridiculousness and pretend it's still practical (AWD for the snow, just add snow tires!)

I like the look of this thing but my issue is that I was pretty uncomfortable riding in this SUV as it all felt pretty cramped, especially the back seat.

If you don't mind a cramped vehicle then just get a legit sports car.

I looked at an FX35 with a friend that is interested in one. I was very impressed with this car, I'm 6'6 and had room in the back even. I always buy American cars but this might be my next purchase, although I would get the FX50.

Wow...a 390 horse CUV.....how incredibly useless. As was asked above...what is the point? $66,000 for what? It is the answer to the question that nobody asked.

Everybody who is b----ing about an FX has not yet driven one. I would have never given these a second glance, but now that I'm driving one I am totally sold on it. I think of it as a Hot Hatch XL!

Doesn't quite compare to the BMW X5 M now does it? Or even the regular X5
I didn't think so!

Dont care what all you "haters" think about this lovely beast of a machine. After owning my fx50s for 10 months, I still love it to bits and would buy it all over again!!!

I really like how the FX50 looks and drives. The interior is spot on, the technology is great and someday I hope to own one rather than just rent them.

Hey, if you spent all that money on something I sure hope you like it! I just cant fathom getting one but if you like it them more power to you!

Yeah! Who cares what actual owners have to say about this car? I'd much rather take car-buying advice from some random kid on the internet.
