2009 Ford Flex: Rear Tire Wear

Flex_reartire1.JPG

Back in July, we wrote on how we needed to get two new front tires for our 2009 Ford Flex due to uneven wear that resulted from a lack of proper tire rotation. That was at 28,316 miles. Now, almost 9,000 miles later, the rear tires are looking like they'll need to be replaced soon as the tread has been worn down very close to the molded wear bars. Even so, getting 38,000 miles or so out of a tire seems pretty reasonable to me.

Man you guys have driven the piss out of this thing

^^yes, that may be a good indicator of how much they like it. IL, any way to get something like "miles/month" listing for all the cars? The higher, the more you like (or at least use) that vehicle.

Well tires like that explain why you guys have such issues driving in the rain.

It's not like they're driving that Edge all that much, maybe switch out the tires with that one?

^^Edge? what Edge?? That fell off the face of the earth...

Where have you guys been? The Edge has been gone for months!

texases says:

^^It's still on the current vehicles list.

Ok editors, 'fess up: who curbed the wheel and rubbed the first "O" off the tire?

(I know... its probably tough to parallel cars that aren't your daily driver... just a joke)

I'd be happy with 38,000 miles out of a pair of all-season tires on a heavy car. Heck, even the near 30,000 figure from the fronts wouldn't have me too distraught. And that's particularly good when you consider that it's been you guys who have been driving it!

The Flex seems to be one of the most popular long-term vehicles the IL team has had. It's been "rode hard and put away wet," as my Texan wife would say, and they have reported essentially zero problems (aside from the infamous sunroof-headliner gap). I think it would be at the top of my shopping list if I needed something of that size.

I have been fruitlessly complaining for months about the total lack of posts for the Edge, in fact after a flurry of posts when they got it, it pretty much dropped out of sight. I have mentioned it several times in the past, but none of the IL staff has seen fit to reply.

How about it guys, a couple less posts on the wonderfulness of the Fit and instead give us an update on the Edge and how it compares to the Flex (and the FX50, which is a similar size I believe).

Considering that these are stock tires which usually aren't the best tires in the world I too would say that 30K miles is good and a lot of those were highway miles. But I hope that you guys replace the tires with something at will last 55-80K miles since it looks like you guys will be using the Flex a lot for the Christmas holidays.

I considered the Hankook Optimos when I got tires last week.....they look to be a pretty good all around tire....probably why Ford choose them. I finally got tires from Americas Tire.......what a great experience .

Texases--The 135i and the Focus coupe are still listed on the current roster, but those are gone too.

I don't know what's with you guys, but I typically get about 60K+ from my tires.

We have not experienced the same problems with our Flex thus far. We did have to have an alignment done at 28000 miles but once aligned correctly, the car decided to pull in the opposite direction. Dealer said, "Tire pull." I mostly ignored this as I knew we'd need tires within the next 10k miles or so as our bloggers are finding out.

Interestingly enough the replacement (not OEM) Hankook's carry an 80,000 mile rating. So, I can only hope that the car will only need another set of tires while we own it.

I concur that the Flex is meant for long range driving (we moved 8 and 7 hours away from our families recently) so, we get plenty of experience in the Flex. Now, if we could only convince Sirius to give us free radio...

Altimadude - I don't see the 135i or Focus on the list.

I got exactly 40,000 miles on my Sumitomo HTR-4s....wich is right on the money for a H speed rated traction A temp A 400 treadlife tire. I went with a bit bigger Falken T rated for 50,000 rating (500 tread life) to save some money and a longer life. They dont corner quite as well but ride nice and are super quiet....I love them so far. But I dont abuse my tires...I keep them inflated and rotate them on schedule.

I am currently looking for new tires for my 2010 Flex. It just failed inspection because the tires are worn. I have 50,000 miles on the original tires. They are a 13 months old. I guess its not to bad.
