I like the fact that Dodge tried to be innovative with the design of the new Ram, but I'm not finding the new Rambox option all that helpful. It seems like a good idea on paper, but I've used this truck for various chores and rarely have I found a good use for the sidewall boxes.
Maybe if we had harsher weather I would feel more compelled to jam stuff into the narrow storage boxes. Or if I used the truck as a utility vehicle for a daily job. But on a personal use vehicle, the Ramboxes just take up bed space that I'd rather have instead.

I'd say this is a SoCal biased comment.

I would think that a person who would buy a Ram for utility work would skip the rams boxes and put a real tool box system in. Like the kind that sit on top of the bed rails. That way, they would have the wider bed and a more useful system for keeping tools a bit more organized then just trowing them in that bin.

Yeah, I'd say its good for tools, or storing car cleaning products.

I'd rather just have lower sidewalls. At work we had these old pickups that I could use perfectly easily, but you have to be a basketball player to load/unload from the side of a new one.
I like the option though. It looks great for people who keep ropes or hoses in their beds.
btw, this new website still doesn’t keep me logged in properly, and it shouldn’t show me a comment box to type in if I’m not logged in.

Hunters / outdoors enthusiasts use 'em like whoa.

Ed, I think the big difference is that this isn't your truck. If you drove this truck every day for years, you'd want an area to "keep" things. The Ram Box works well for that.
Because you wouldn't have this vehicle for more than a week at a time, you wouldn't have that need.

The Chevy Avalanche has had these bed side boxes since its introduction and I haven't seen anyone use them. As a matter of fact I've only seen the fold down bulkhead used once on an Avalanche as well.

Out of curiousity, are the boxes wide enough to hold a gallon of milk? Because they seem like a good place to put small grocery and department store purchases... That's all I can think of for them really.

I agree it's a great concept but fails in the real world.
For a pickup truck, the bed needs to be large and simple. The complexity of seals, latches, doors, interior panels seems to go against the rugged use a truck bed will get.
In reality, the aftermarket bed drawers, tool boxes, bed boxes, etc all are better and more adaptable to individual owners' usage.
The biggest flaw is the huge loss of bed sq. footage. This is basically a narrow stepside bed with really complex saddlebags.
Anything you can fit in the RamBoxes could be stowed in the huge cabin or a bedbox (and still have much more useable bedspace leftover).
Great idea but I don't see it as anything more than a recreational truck user's accessory. Really, it's more fitting to a Honda Ridgeline than a full size pickup with real duty requirements.

Long have I foreseen this moment.
Now that I have said that crusierhead1 said it perfectly with the 4 door cab the Ram Boxes lose a lot of purpose not to mention since this is a 1/2 pickup the big cab eats up cargo room so do the Ram Boxes for the most common loads that a pickup sees. I wonder if Dodges compact truck the Dakota as about the same cargo room as this Ram 1500?

I assume you don't tailgate much!

Its called innovation...look into it. Most Rams are not sold with this option but it is nice to have it available. It would be the ultimate tailgating truck! Best of all it has been reliable so far.

If this was your own personal truck, these boxes would be the perfect place for many of the things you need to store and forget about until you need them.

It does look like a good spot to hold guns. How long are the boxes? Will a shotgun fit? It looks like it even has a nice indent for ammo boxes.
