2009 BMW M3: Sedan Makes More Sense

bmw-m3-boxes-717.jpg

Picked up this little number from the local furniture store recently. For a second I thought about running home to get a bigger car, but I figured it was worth trying to squeeze it in to the M3 first.

Sure enough, with a little adjustment of the front seat I wedged it in there. Could I have done the same in the M3 coupe? Maybe, but to me this was just another instance of why the M3 sedan makes more sense.

So the M3 can fit a little box from one corner to another? Swell.

rear seats don't fold down? no pass thru?

That could hardly be called an advantage. You couldn't even have one passenger to carry that box. Is there no trunk pass-through?

Wow, that's just wonderful, and today I had a really good bowel movement!

C'mon, really now, please give us information that's actually a bit more useful when it comes to a performance car. I really don't care to read about how an M3 fits into the life and times of a Santa Monica metro sexual lifestyle.

Maybe certain cars should only be assigned to certain Edmunds' staffers - give it back to Jacquot for awhile why don't ya, and let's hear more of what he's got to say about an M3, i.e. more donut videos etc.!

the standard 3-series has a fold down rear seat... so did you just not use it or does the M3 not have one?

@audikrazy1: fold-down rear seats are not a standard feature in a 3-series. They are available either as a stand-alone option, or as part of the Cold Weather package. Same is true of the M3 sedan, according to BMWUSA.com.

I believe this is part of BMW's ongoing effort to stun people with the quantity and quality of features that are NOT standard.

I'm with charlesncharge, less furniture, more donut vids! It's a frickin' M3!

Edmund's M3 does have fold down rear seats since they opted for the cold weather package and there are posts already done on that. Not sure why this configuration was done with the package and not just fold the back seats down but maybe he was showing what you could do if your trunk was already full? Either way the M3 is a sweet ride that shows that you can have an incredible car ride to work and for errands and it is still pretty practical. I appreciate posts like this. And I just read the CTS-V article that it beat old man Bob Lutz in his CTS-V!

If I'm not mistaken, fold downs are standard in the M3 coupes and part of the Cold Weather package for the M3 sedans.

it's as useful as a Nissan Z! only faster!

Sorry don't see the point of this post. You could just about the same thing in any 4 door sedan hell even the small Focus could do the same trick.

brn says:

hybris, nah with the Focus you'd lay the package across the back floor. You wouldn't need to occupy the entire passenger compartment.

cr_driver says:

Yeah, very little sense about this post, almost any car can do that, even the M3 coupe.

bimmerjay says:

Yes the exact same thing would be possible in the coupe. And the coupe has standard fold-down seats on all models.

The best part about the M3 sedan is that it's faster than Bob Lutz, although perhaps not his mouth.

I'd call the girlfriend and have her pick up the package in her cute-ute while I hit Angeles Crest or something for some M3-style driving.

The coupe still looks A LOT better IMO. OTOH the sedan is definitely more stealthy.

So why don't they do a M3 wagon? C63 and S4 are available as wagons, and the 3-series wagon looks a million times better than the sedan...

This is one of the top ten most useless posts i've ever seen on these pages. How about a post about how someone filled the M3 with gas??? That would be exciting!

Here's an exciting post....

Fill the M3 with 4 passenegers and a driver and go all out at Leguna Seca with a dash mounted camera pointed towards everyone.

Then do a slalom test, braking test from 80mph, etc.
